A fat dollfie.

Dec 30, 2005

    1. I'm a little torn on the issue....it would be really cool to have dolls of all different body types, but I think it would be very difficult to dress them all. I'm a very tall, big-footed chunk myself, and it's hard enough for me to find clothes and shoes for myself, so I'm sure it would be difficult and expensive to find ones for all different sizes of dolls. Buuuut....I think I'd like it anyway^^ I wouldn't get all chubby dolls though, I still love my slim girls <3

    2. In response to Nancy S.' post, I like curves on the female body, and if someone wanted to make a chubbier doll, that's fine with me. But, railing against bjd gals for being too skinny and destroying the self-esteem of girls is taking things a bit far. BJDs are stylized--there's no doubt (some more than others), yet they make a nice compromise between realism and taking liberties with the human form. The girls are thin, but unlike a lot of fashion dolls whose main purpose is to look good clothed, they have more curves and stay close enough to human proportions to not be jarring and the skinnyness isn't usually taken to that much of an extreme. There are plenty of exaggerated guys as well--they look like they've been at the gym every day of the week or are also on the thinner than average side).

There are things in the media that do promote an unhealthy body image and quite frankly make me cringe, however, that doesn't mean that every lean depiction of a female is automatically horrible or unhealthy. And as others have pointed out, some people really are naturally smaller than others.

I think my girls are beautiful--do I expect all women or myself to look like they do? No of course not, they are dolls and don't have genetic hard wiring to encourage them to grow a certain way, nor do they have to worry about eating healthy or exercising. The resin ladies have things simple, but that's in the nature of being resin and not a flesh and blood human with all the little quirks and imperfections that make us who we are.

    3. Ahaha~ That's an amusing idea. :)

Well, I think Aoi-tukis are the limit to the fattest(?) a dollfie can get.

Then again... it might be just the proportion of their hips... >_>

    4. Reading through the post although it would be nice to see more body shape variety with bjds there would, i think, be too many issues regarding posability and clothing issues. That being said i love the way ruby looks even if she was digitally created and not actually made.

On the subject of the average bjd size i do not think it was the intention of the creators to make them look thin simply because of aethetics, more to do with the freedom you have if the doll isnt so large, which enables a wider range of poses and isnt so troublesome to create. :3

    5. I've known as many healthy fat people as I have unhealthy thin people - and it's not like we're even discussing dolls that are massively overweight, here. I'm actually pretty sick of the attitude that fat = always unhealthy and wrong, especially as its a huge generalization. If the fat is unhealthy for you? Fine. But I get annoyed when I see the same standards applied to the rest of humanity. Some people feel unhealthy while thin and healthy while fat, and some people feel unhealty while fat and healthy while thin. That does not mean that fat is always 'not okay', or that thin people are always the embodiment of health.

    6. Yes! I have an Aoi-Tuki girl and I love her to bits!

However, like someone else said, finding clothes is INCREDIBLY hard. She fits in SD13 BOY pants, however, they are too tight for her to even sit down! I am going to have to make my own pants for her XD (or better yet, bring her home so my MOM can make pants for her XD).

    7. Thank you. I myself am about 50-60 lbs over what my weight 'should be', but otherwise I'm healthy and have been for ages. Good blood pressure, low bad cholesterol (I do exercize to keep my good cholesterol up), good blood count, good immune system. The worse I have is a mold allergy. I am trying to lose weight soley for cosmetic purposes, but even my goal weight is overweight.

And to me, 'fat' just means the opposite of 'skinny.' Yeah, I consider myself fat. I'm not obese or in dire need to lose weight... but I'm fat. I don't give 'fat' negotive connotations in this case, just like skinny can be neutral or negative, depending on context.

Anyway, agreeing with the design issues of a chubbier/fat doll. You'd have to design them just right to make clothes not look weird and lumpy on them, and then you're potentially sacrificing an attractive nude chubby doll. And then there are the posability issues. Then again, I've seen some of DoA's artists make really hippy dolls and such, I'm sure a careful planner and skilled sculptor could make it work. It would just be a major balancing act.

I have my own dream doll to sculpt who has very a unrealistic, big-busted big-butted hour-glass shape, based on my art. I'd love to sculpt her... but even in the planning phases, there are issues. Like, the fact that usually, girls who are chunkier have fatter thighs that press together. And when the tissue is soft and squishy, that's fine. But when the doll is hard and resin and isn't squishable... its hard to visually get the thighs that close without ruining posability or making it look really odd.

    8. I'm no expert, because I'm new at this, but Happy Doll has some tinies that are very chubby. They sort of have fat baby bodies. They are soooo cute. But they don't pose very well because of that. I have seen several of them on sale on a few of the doll sties. If I didn't already have a boat load of dolls, I'd get one. And my Souldoll Miryu, (old body) has a badonka donk butt. lol. I don't know about the newer bodies.

    9. "Okay" is sort of a touchy concept in relation to weight. "Not okay" doesn't sound like "not good for your health" to a fat person, it sounds like "unacceptable." I'm not going to argue that being fat can be healthy. It will effect your health one way or the other somewhere down the line. But I don't ever want someone's problem with their health to be something that can destroy their social acceptability.

I'm going to go off on kind of a tangent now, so note that I'm not putting words in the mouth of anyone here. I've heard too much "I hate fat people." I ask "Why?" "Because it's unhealthy." "So you hate unhealthy people?" "No, but it's their fault they're fat." "Not necessarily. But you hate people who make unhealthy choices, then? Smokers, for example." "No, not really. I just hate fat people."

    10. When I saw this thread I was reminded of an artist's doll in the Artists' Asian-styled BJDs section that I saw quite awhile ago and thought was quite lovely.
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104206
I adore her curvy body and shes very well made however there doesn't seem to be any fully complete pictures of her at this time.
(forgive me if this link was posted already I didn't read though the entire thread ^^; )

I would definitely like to see more curvy female dolls in general, maybe I would actually be more interested in girl dolls if there were some, technical posing/clothing issues aside, haha. However I do have to agree with people who say they like their girls skinny so they can dress them in the clothes they wish they could wear, it would probably be the same for me if I had girls. Plus there is a matter of connivance in most clothing being interchangeable.
but over all these dolls are made to be ideals, and most people's ideals are for slender figures. I realize I'm speaking very generally here and without reference to cultural differences and such. Either way I doubt a really curvy or fat doll will ever be mass produced, as someone already mentioned your only going to find them from smaller studios or individual artists.
Im planning on makeing a tiny sized girl actually and have been waffling back and fourth between makeing her very busty and curvey or with more childish proportions, so this thread has me thinking busty and curvy might be a more fun way to go XD

    11. Ahh if we're going on the string that girl dolls should be a little more hefty to keep up realism, then let's please make their boobs sag as well?

Personally, I like the bodies they have now. I've seen Dream of Doll girl bodies, and while they're thinner than the boys I'm accustomed to handling, I rather liked that she had a bit of a pouche in the front

So I don't think they're all skinny. I rather like them the way they are.

    12. My girl is an AOD Rao and I must say her body is not stick thin. The AOD girls have bigger hips, bums and boobs than other molds. They are in no way large girls but, I would say, they are at the 'fatter' end of the spectrum of slim dolls. I was impressed by Maud's almost realistic body.:)

But at the end of the day, they are dolls, they are not real. They can't eat cookies and kashmiri curries like me and be too lazy to exercise, again like me:lol:

    13. Would you mind backing the bolded information up, or perhaps clarifying what you meant? As it stands, it strikes me as terribly insulting to men who, last I checked, are also human and able to internalize, and also have feelings related to body image. To deny this and toss it aside is a great disservice to the many males suffering from eating disorders and other health issues.

Back to the point at hand - I think there definitely is a lack of diversity with dolls produced by doll companies, not only limited to body type but even to things such as facial sculpts.
      However, doll companies in general are still not very mainstream. I don't think there's too much room for diversity if only a handful of people are making dolls. The artists dolls linked throughout this thread show that, as bjds gain popularity and a larger (and more diverse) group participates in the hobby, then diversity will follow. At least that's my optimistic view ^^;

(As a small aside regarding my point of view on my dolls - I tend to see my dolls as something ethereal and not at all correlating to reality. They're pretty pieces of art - they're in the shape of humans, but they don't reflect reality to me at all. Completely separate. Yes, they're pretty, and arguably prettier than me, but if my Soony suddenly came to life, grew to be 1:1 scale, I think she'd be terrifying :sweat )

    14. I understand that dolls have a little bit of what we like. Some people like vampires, centaurs, goth dolls, punk dolls, etc. If that so then I really don't see why is so bad to think in create a "fat" doll... Say that fat dolls should not exist come from the same idea that fat people should not exist. Why? because some people don't consider fat pretty or healthy. Even inside art the artist want to create reality. Have you seen the awesome super gem body SOOM created? He have veins!!! Then I need to ask again... what's wrong in create a doll that can be considered fat? I don't find anything wrong about it. I really would like to see more reality in molds. Why not ask for it when we are paying more than $500 for dolls?

    15. I would like to see some dolls with a more realistic body shape, but along with a more generous body, the face would have to follow suit...as people of size generally have rounder faces, more jowl and chin fat...{I'm fat, so when I look in the mirror it's what I see}

but my concern with dolls being made in this form...is fitting them for clothes..none of the companies clothes would fit, and if doll clothing follows human clothing standards, we would have to pay more for clothes for our chubby dolls...as those of us in the generous proportions catagory know..clothing in the Xtra size costs more than the S-L size clothing...so fitting them, unless you are a seamstress would be difficult.. and we all know that the clothes from these companies, while well made and usually worth it..are a pretty penny now..

on a different note...wouldn't it be cool if they came out with a doll that would have different tummy plates, and even include a pregnant one, so you could change them in the different stages of pregnancy...all these doll marriages taking place would have whole new concept for photoshoots...*_*
      it wobbles the mind..

    16. I don't think that. Unless people want to scam you they should cost the same in my opinion... It would be even more cool create a plus size clothing line!!! :daydreaming:

    17. I think that was posted before but someone said the artist had abandoned the project. Someone also I believe said that doll was "fetishized" or somehow unreal. She actually looks to me like she could be someone's real body, as real bodies come in all sizes and shapes especially if you're overweight (as a lot of us know).
I wish someone would finish an actual FAT dollfie...and I'm sorry, but I don't think that Dollstown body qualifies as "fat", if anything it just looks mildly more healthier and more normal than all the other super-skinny doll bodies.
As usual you run into the issue that with dolls, as with people, skinny bodies look better in clothes and photos and also take less material and hassle to dress, so skinny bodies are the norm for dolls. It's unfortunate, especially for those of us who see dolls as art in and of themselves and not just as clothes horses or photographic subjects.

    18. has anyone ever noticed that volks SD10 girl bodies have little baby-fats near their armpits? *ninja*

    19. I know that the fashion industry likes to charge more for the extra sizes being a chunky tall myself, but really in a doll outfit a few inches shouldn't matter that much in price and how many different doll sizes are there? lots!! If a chubby doll was popular there will be seamstresses & pattern makers who design for it.

The reason I started sewing was to have clothing that I liked that would fit without the trouble & expense of finding clothing that would have those few extra inches at the wrists & ankles that I normally wouldn't get. In my opinion, there will be things made for a chubby doll if even a few people have her.
