A fat dollfie.

Dec 30, 2005

    1. I think the higher price wouldn't necessarily be coming from the extra fabric, but more from the fact that it would be an extreme specialty item. Unlike an outfit that can fit a general range of sizes (like some outfits that fit a huge range of 60cm scale dolls, or 45cm minis), if this fat doll were made it would need its own wardrobe, and I'll bet you anything that
      a) there would actually be fairly few owned on the forum (especially compared to very popular dolls like Volks' and Luts'/CP's sculpts)
      b) there would be fairly few people making clothes for that size of doll

so if there are only 2 sellers that cover that size, they could essentially charge an arm and a leg because people have very few options. : /

    2. That's why I started sewing - for myself & dolls: to give myself options.

I shouldn't have gone off on 'skinny' dolls like that, but it does bother me what seems to be generally considered 'fat' - when they're actually normal.

As for lack of diversity, I agree entirely. While I applaud the attempts of some companies to include dolls of darker hue, for example, in the main they aren't really diverse - they're just the same sculpts w/darker resin. I love the one company that has dolls that actually have Africanized features! That's great! I'd like to see more, in polynesian, and various asian features - ironic in view of the fact the mfrs are mostly asian themselves, yet very few of the dolls have overtly asian features. But that's what makes people so interesting, is the differences in their faces, their hair, their coloring, their eyes. If we all looked the same - how boring!

I DID sculpt my own bjd 1/6 - or rather, modded an obitsu normal female 1/6, and added about 3/4 lb of epoxy putty to her all over, aiming for the look of a Renoir model: plump, but not obese. I think I did pretty well, but she does have the same problem a living Renoir-esque girl does: she doesn't bend as well (the epoxy tummy gets in the way a tad, just like a real tummy). Aside from very minor problems like this, however, she models, poses, and otherwise does just fine - and I like her better because she has more individualism, more 'character', to me at least. I haven't noticed any additional cost or difficulty in dressing her, either, but that's because I make all her stuff myself, so it's not an issue.

    3. NancyS - Wow! I love her legs!

    4. It is a lovely concept, one that Tinybear has realised with her bonbon doll currently in production. I would like to see some curves on dolls, but I agree they may only appeal to those who can dressmake as they wouldn't fit standard clothes.

One day we might see a curvy ( not just big bum ans boobs) 60 cm doll, I certainly would praise the company brave enough to do it.

    5. Thank yew. So does her husband, Nev! ;D

But you see what I mean: she's NOT obese - just ... not thin. Plump. It would be more apparent if I posted a photo of her w/out clothes, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed.

Anyway, this gal is a 1/6 Obitsu 'normal' female body + 3/4 lb of epoxy putty all over - mainly the torso, but also the extremities (including the legs & upper arms) as well as (obviously) the head. And as can be seen, she balances just fine, poses just fine - and I have no problem dressing her...albeit I do admit she perhaps can't do some of the more extreme poses a 'skinnier' doll would/could.

Hey - if I wanted a contortionist, I'd get an orangutang doll.

    6. NancyS That was what I had exactly in mind. She's a curvy girl :D.

    7. I say it could be cool ^^ It seems many people would want to see it, so I have nothing against it. Actually for me, I don't know if I'd really but one (I'd have to see it first heh). I like a non-BJD doll, she has nice chubby legs and it's still very cute. I'd like something like that, though I don't know if any BJD company actually makes a cute chubbyish doll like that. It seems most BJD are really thin though, which could be offending to some... @_@

    8. chubby or a extra curvey doll is one thing, but I agree with the other person in saying I dont see how fat dolls could have any value to me.

    9. But techincally, a chubby person IS fat, to me anyway. From Merrium-Webster online, the definition of fat:

"1: notable for having an unusual amount of fat: a: plump b: obese"

A chubby person falls under that.

I think one of the bigger issues in this thread is that everyone seems to have a different definition of 'fat.' Some people think anything bigger than average is fat, to others fat only refers to the morbidly obese. For others, it's having an exagerated hourglass figure.

Even when we start talking in terms of 'chubby,' everyone has a different visual. And even 'skinny' will bring up different images -- for some, skinny ish healthy. For others, skinny is anorexic. For others, skinny is anything smaller than 'average.' And what is defined as average varies too.

So that's always going to be a cause of confusion/arguement. Member A says, "I want a fat doll!" picturing a doll built like Queen Latifah. Member B pictures a moribdly obese person, and says they won't support such a bad image. Member C reads Member B's response, picturing say a busty woman with a hippy hourglass figure, and is offended as well.

So the very fact that we all view 'fat' differently is going to lead to confusion :sweat

    10. That's true. Chubby, big, fat... all is the same... ^^*

    11. Thanks for pointing that out Mandiiv, I think that's the thing that was starting to bother me. While I don't agree that being chubby=fat, I do agree that we all have different ideas as to what the term actually means and apply it differently based on how we personally view it. I mean, some people, like myself, would love a pudgy body for a doll, but not an obese one. So how does one go about that? Do I want a "fat" doll? Since I don't see pudgy as being fat, then I say no, but to others who think having a little extra chub as being "fat" then the answer is yes.

      I think it'd be easier for people to post their thoughts on the subject if we all had a general idea as to what was what >.>;

    12. That's quite sad if the artist did cancel the project because I thought that doll would have been interesting at the end. Also, like I said in the thread about why these dolls have genitals..BJDs look amazingly real and are very detailed. Why not take it a step further and make heavier set dolls (plus sized dolls, similar to Lane Bryant models)...or offer a few dolls that can have the interchangeable tummy plate (because some people might prefer that). I guess it has a lot to do with preference, really. Is there a market for plus sized dolls? Maybe? Who knows..I'm a bigger girl and the weight thing and idea of a heavier set doll hasn't come to my mind until now. Why not make a doll that can pose just as well but have a little more curves to it, or make it a tad bigger. I think it'd be appropriate and more real to make a doll that was bigger. But I guess that's not my decision to make. ::Shrugs:: I suppose that's all I have to say without jumping all over the place more then I already have.

Nancy, I have to say that I love that doll. She is very curvy and exactly what I'd think of when wanting a "plus sized" doll. She's gorgeous. :D I'd love to see what the sculpt looked liek without clothes. I think you could probably post her in here. ::Shrugs:: I don't see the problem in that.

    13. You get annoyed? I get annoyed when people keep denying that fat = unhealthy. So many people don't understand how much HARDER your body works when you're overweight. Love handles and a little chub are still healthy, but the weight I'm talking about is more noticeable than that, but not obese. So SO many things work out better for your body and cells when you're not carrying all that extra weight around, whether the weight is fat or muscle. Please stop thinking that over-weight = always okay. It's not. Some people can handle the strain better than others, and so being over-weight works out for them. Most can't and they don't even know it.
But I digress. This is about dolls, and the positive/negative image they might have if fat. My point? Sure, go ahead with your unposable sewing-nightmare fat dollies! Just don't look at them and, because they're beautiful, feel like being over-weight is healthy. It may be okay for you, and your self image may bank on being fat. I'm not saying that it's not okay to be fat. It's just unhealthy, in so many many ways. :B

Luckily, fat dolls would only have to worry about specialized shoes, clothing, and posing un-possibilities, and not health problems. That's the beauty to dolls. I'm sure Shasta would eat me out of house and home if he had those needs. :')
But like Mandiiv said, everyone's version of fat is different. The Dollstown body in question, which is plumper than other dolls, isn't "Fat" or "overweight" if attributed to a real body. It's pretty healthy. But we say fat and plump because there are too many adjectives for this subject and no set definitions.
I don't consider myself FAT, but I AM overweight. 5'8" and 235 lbs, I would be pushing it, but I carry it really well in all the right places, so I fall under the "over-weight" category. I would love a healthier looking slightly chubby doll for art reasons and diversity of body types, plus, a healthy looking body just really appeals to the eyes. (that's one reason why Kid Delfs appeal MUUUUUUUUUUUCH more than MNF's. Healthy cherubs) But fat? "fat doll" to me just sounds like a mess of balance and posing, and I have a hard enough time getting Shasta to stand up.

    14. Thank you, all. Her name is Liddia, and she's originally an Obitsu 1/6 "normal" body female + 3/4lb (more or less) of epoxy putty. If I can get my camera to work, I'll post photos of the unclothed sculpt next week.

The only 'extra' thing I had to do was to sand the lower belly over the upper thighs quite high to accomodate the, uh, 'extra' leg tissue/epoxy so she could sit.

    15. I will start my doll today after make my reading for the class :(. I will let you know how it is working. About the fat topic I need to say something. One thing is being fat (10- 50 punds extra) and one thing is being morbid obese (60 -200 or over pounds extra). I was morbit obese and I know how unhealthy it is. However, I noticed that once I lose my first 50 pounds my body didn't want to lose more. I can lose more and I will but what I need to do is eat like a horse (only salad). I'm making a sacrifice but that doesn't mean everybody need to do the same to be "healthy". I'm healthy how I am now. People is fat not because they eat unhealthy. Some people is simply fat because that is the way their body is. Things like cholesterol, high blood preassure and diabetes are genetically inherited. Even doing diet all your life you may end with it. See the fat people like a body full of unhealthy sickness is just a wrong idea. Even being fat can be inherited. If the parents are fat maybe one may not be fat but the other will be. Also being fat have a lot to do with emotional things. Bad eatting habits can be a learned behavior too.

Returning to the dolly topic. I don't understand why people complain about the clothes the doll will use. I imagine that when the hobby started the only ones with clothes were Volks and people bought from them doesn't matter the cost. The shoes should be horrible and the clothes too at the time :sweat. As every new concept there is a period of there is not much to chose from until other people decide to make clothes and create stores. Now we have a lot of options but not in the beggining. It's the same with a new body form...

    16. As I said previously, 'Some people feel unhealthy while thin and healthy while fat, and some people feel unhealty while fat and healthy while thin.' Fat != always bad, or always good. For that matter, thin != always bad, or always good.

Anyway, it's not as if the idea that fat = omg unhealthy bad is something people are totally unaware of, given that the media tends to bombard people with the message.

    17. *laughs* NancyS your girl is awsome!

    18. I've got a CP Kid Delf and compared to his boyfriend (DOC Kyrill) he looks kind of .. fat XD but he looks more childish so it's acceptable.

    19. I suspect that a chubby or fat mature doll would have a limited audience as many people seem to be after a doll with an idealized body image or one that will fit in/look good for "modeling" purposes in a wide range of clothing. But I can see limited runs of chubby or fat dolls, like editions of 10 or 20, for people who are interested in that.

And if someone really wanted to get into the "fat dollfie" project they could make different types of chubby/fat bodies. The zaftig busty/hippy kind, the overall "fat" kind, really there are many possibilities here and I find them all pretty intriguing. Unless someone is so obese that they can't get out of bed or walk around easily (you know, like those 5 foot 4 inch women who are over 300 lbs - I've actually known a couple of these people and they're physically handicapped, it's beyond just "fat") I think many body sizes are interesting to look at and pretty in different ways.

The almost-universal skinniness of BJDs reminds me uncomfortably of Barbies at times, although BJDs are not quite as extreme as Barbie's body in most cases. I just don't like the idea of a world populated only by the "conventionally beautiful" skinny and buff people.

    20. FYI The guy making the doll in question hasn't abandoned the project. I'm not sure why he hasn't updated the thread in quite a while, but he has been working on her. (He comes to local meetups.) I saw her at the first meetup I ever went to, the first time I'd ever seen BJDs in real life. I was shocked at how scrawny regular girl dolls looked in comparison to her.
