A fat dollfie.

Dec 30, 2005

    1. I like to get large breasted dolls for this reason - more realistic curve and an older looking doll is really appealing. But they're proportionate - no humungous gravity defying boobies with tiny tiny waist and butt. More hourglass-y. But I also like slim MSD's, because they look delicate, but I always like them to have realistic curves. They're even more fun to dress when they have curves, and I enjoy designing clothes :)
I've seen some pretty realistic looking dolls at Iplehouse, mostly. Though I think they're the most realistic company I can think of, though they do have some dolls with ribs, but I think this is more a striving for realism as opposed to stylised smoothness. Many of the BJD's I've seen do not have ribs showing through. Iplehouse dolls don't look skinny though, to my opinion, so the line of ribs do not scare me >.>

Edit: on the pressure to be thin point, one might think of a pressure to be meatier or more curvy... sometimes thin people are very realistic too. When I was thin I was very thin and I couldn't put on weight at all, and many thought that was horrible, or that I should go eat some cake... it was offensive, because hey - that's just how I am. The only reason I've put on weight now is the medications I take :/ not because I eat healthier. So while curvy dolls are realistic... thinner dolls are realistic too, they're just on the other end of the spectrum.

    2. Isara: I havn't seen those little ones either! It's too bad these sorts of dolls aren't more plentiful. And wow, that person must be a pig, how could they say that? I am underweight and it causes a lot of problems for me (bad knees, low blood sugar, etc), I am always trying to bulk up but I just can't. Perhaps we are all doomed to be envious of other body types? But the Romanesque figures I think are the most beautiful for sure! What happened to our ideals? (And hopefully some day I can create a beautiful doll to your standards).

Xanadu: It is REALLLLLLY hard to find a masculine MSD or smaller doll. Perhaps because they focus on adolescent males which typically are more androgynous, but it would be nice to see some more mature variants! Not all little dolls must be "young".

Sundaes: You have a lot of great opinions! I love the hourglass and pear figures, but perhaps that is because artists have a lot more fun with a figure when the lines can be exaggerated thus. I'm not saying I dislike slim dolls either! I have my own skinny little-uns that I adore, I just feel like the market is really off balance. :< And like I mentioned about, I have terrible issues with gaining weight and it DOES get annoying when people act like you're unhealthy because of it. Excuse me?! I am not anorexic! I probably eat more than you! Ughhhh.

    3. yeah both the male characters I have planned are not feminine at all, and its impossible to find sculpts that suit them (in MSD size)
I guess androgyny sells, and as a rare straight guy in the hobby, I don't want feminine males (I might as well just get female dolls)

    4. Uh... I can assure you I'm 100% healthy and eat like a pig, and yes, OMG you CAN see my ribs. Same thing for my boyfriend, who is very lean and muscular but doesn't store an ounce of fat on him (5'9" at 130 pounds for him, and he also has an extremely feminine figure). Just the way his body works, he ate half of a giant casserole of shepherd's pie I made today. So in my opinion? There aren't a hell of a lot of "unhealthy" looking dolls out there, minus the ones that are clearly intentionally stylized to be super long and thin and OBVIOUSLY not-all-too-human, eg. the Dollshe boys or the bee-waist of DD girls (not taking into account the sculptor's basic proportional preferences, obviously there aren't too many dolls out there who are OMG exactly like a real little person).

I like different body types in my collection. Before I sold them all I had sorta-pudgy kids and dudes with 6-packs. Now I just have a tiny, who is appropriately chubby and childish for his intended age. I REALLY wanna own at least one female and male from Iplehouse's SID or EID lines because they're just amazing, and at the same time I really want Spiritdoll's Elegance boy body which is really lean and youthful. (And if you look up on Dollmore, there's a line of dolls called Alex Doll, sculpted by the same artist who made Zaoll, and they have a really adorable pudgy child body that's just right for one of my kids)

I'm gonna be honest, I'm pretty happy with the way things are right now. Of course, I don't have any qualms with artists experimenting with different body types and all the power to them, but I am absolutely disinterested in them unless one day I get so much money that I'll be able to buy dolls to suit my very minor characters.

    5. I would like to see more variety. Like an adult, well-built (as in: broad-shouldered) male that ISN'T toned. It's not so much the female bodies I have a problem with (as others have said there are curvy chicks out there), it's the trend that more muscles is better. For me, less is more. I don't want my doll to look like he does nothing else than lift weights in the gym.

Every body is beautiful (well... most anyway), not just the athletic types.

    6. Would you want a "big" doll?
      Sure. :D

What are the most beautiful aspects of a large woman to you?
A thick or bigger woman with a proportionate body is extremely sexy. It's very womanly and soft in my opinion.

    7. I think we need to stop blaming the media and stop blaming our own minds. Yes, thin women are shown everywhere, but you choose what you do with that.
A wider variety of body types would be nice, and some people are working on it, but because body fat isn't solid like resin, it's extremely difficult to create a functional body. In general it's just not practical to make a doll with a lot of mass.
I agree there is less diversity in male bodies than in female bodies.

    8. I'm pretty sure I haven't chosen the dolls I have due to media manipulation, and not all girls have big breasts, and while they tend to be thin, there is more variation than you're giving credit for, I think. My Volks SD girls are not super skinny or big busted (I actually like smaller chested girls). Those that are skinnier, well they are dolls and not people. I gravitate towards stylized head sculpts, so perhaps that is why a stylized body doesn't bother me.

Another issues is that words like 'big' and 'heavyset' mean different things to different people -- to what extent are you talking? I think having more roundness through the backside and hips is very pretty, but I would prefer my dolls to not be over weight at the same time... it also really depends a lot on the character I'm trying to create as I have one whose supposed to be skinny with not a lot of curves yet I have the above mentioned SD girls too.

There is someone on DoA that produced their own plus sized doll, but she was SD sized. Still, you may want to look into it. There was also a tiny that fit the bill as well at the Fat Fairies, Coco and Bonbon. I hope my post didn't sound really negative -- it's early here and I'm short on sleep. I'm not against variety at all, but at the same time I'm not keen on the hobby being accused of being a bad role model.

    9. I don't think that certain aesthetics in ART need to reflect REALITY. I love exagerated, unrealistic body types in art, I love skinny, wirey female bodies like the Dollstown Elf body, and elongated male bodies like Dollshe. Do I know that REAL people are not necassarily supposed to look like this? Duh. Its called stylisation.

And as others have pointed out, the weight of resin is a legitimate limitation for creating a heavy-set body type in this medium.

    10. I would personally love a bigger girl. Not necessarily fat, but with more body and less of it being up in the chest or down in the hips. Even though everyone is saying that the Iple girls aren't as skinny, they're still TOO thin for the only female character I would looooooove to have in a doll. There just isn't enough in the middle to balance out the ultra-feminine curves to create a suitably mature woman. I may either have to go with an Iple (if they ever make a face I like instead of one that's bland and not nearly as... Evil, as I need) and simply make padded clothing to give the appearance of more torso or give up on creating her all together.

Honestly, I think there is a surplus of thinner women and anyone looking for anything different is drown out by the raving over how beautiful the skinny ones are. Yes there are the few artist dolls like Aoi Tuki, but even those are not quite the shape some people want. The hips are bigger but the waist is still small and it ends up looking too different (not bad, my friend is shaped like that and I adore her, she's so darn cute!) to work.

As for the boys, I tend to like 'em thin and lean, but that's a personal preference, I do have the urge for one big muscular man and I'm working on that. And I'm seeing a lot more companies coming out with muscular guys, but still with the thin-waisted girls, so I'm baffled by how they are interpreting the desire for more weight on their dolls by it meaning "Just more muscles on the men". Not that more muscles are bad, but it's still... Sort of an oddly skewed way to look at it.

And I know they don't always speak the best English, but still. *steps off her cardboard box and trundles away*

    11. there are actually quite a few out there, if you look, Dollshe have produced a curvier doll as have Iplehouse with the EID and SID, Dollmore with the glamour Eve (and to a lesser extent the glamour model girls) Older style Rainydolls have hips to spare, and the badonkadonk butt on Lishe is legendary and the aoi Tuki has the butt of doom, and does not have the gravity defying OMg I am gonna fall forward boobs. Yes a lot of the dolls DO have skinny little bodies but not all, there is a great deal of variety out there. here is even the delf, a softer male body that to me looks cuddly and just a wee bit pudgey. In the end there is a lot of variety and you just need to look around to see it.

A few points of agreement to make

I do feel there is a LOT less variety in male dolls than in female dolls, and that the guys do feel social pressure to fit an image (not necessarily from the doll community however) Doll trends have changed, dolls are getting leaner, more muscular and more mature in appearance, but not necessarily more masculine or proportionate

Media does affect thinking that is afterall the whole point of media. The highest recorded incidence of eating disorders historically coincides with the highest media demands to be thin (eg the 20s and flappers, the 90s and heroin chique) but people are more aware of it now, and awareness produces resistance, I think we are able to tell the difference between healthy and sickly. That being said there is also discrimination against thin people. I have a good female friend who is 5'7, 110lb and has 30D breasts. People accuse her of being anorexic and say mean things about her a LOT. She eats like a horse, works out, and is very healthy, she is just very thin by nature....except her chest...which is not

It is well established that we want to see more variety in the dolls, but yes, the fact they are solid does limit what can be done, flesh is soft, it compreses and moves, resin dos not. We can get curves, but we are likely to loose a lot in poseability.

I want to point out that this topic always brings up the discussion of the girls and how folks want realistic women...I want to know if anyone out there wants a rounder, softer and maybe even tubby guy doll?

    12. Agree. Resin "fat" would be different from human fat, which can be shifted *lol*
It would very likely restrict movement/posing ability and be very difficult when
trying to dress....I like my dolls because they can wear fancy glamourous outfits...
a really chubby/fat doll would be limited in that sense....clothes would either have
to be tailored to fit the "curves" or be very loose. I don't want a doll to be limited
in that sense because of design, but rather my choice in how I dress them.

Also if you have a larger sized body in reality you would need the face to match it
better...slightly puffy cheeks or even a little extra chin. It would be interesting to
see a double chin on a doll, but I imagine it might restrict head movement.
Someone did make a "fat" BJD body, unfortunately they simply plopped on another
companies head and all it ended up looking like was a doll in a fat suit.
      Not appealing whatsoever, sorry.

I definitely don't think anyone can blame ABJD's of creating body image problems.
And while many people of all ages deal with body issues, most people who have
these dolls are well past the age where this is the first introduction into the unrealistic
ideals of how women should look, blame Barbie for that.

There are definitely far more body choices for male dolls than girls though!
From the super skinny almost alien physique of the Dollshe rythmos body to EID's
and IDealians and everything in-between, there's nowhere near as much variety
for female dolls. But hopefully that will change over time. There have been many
new sculpts just in the past 2 years that are challenging companies to create new
bodies....I think they would consider "larger" bodies if they felt the demand was
there. Sometimes it helps to communicate with a company you like.

edit: variety does not mean that you'll find what you are looking for. It just
means that there are more choices/options.

    13. I like having a variety of shapes and sizes with dolls and buy them with this in mind. I have three of Tinybear's "fat fairies" (as she calls them) and just love them, although they work better for me in their small size than they would if they were were SD sized, just because of the weight they would be if they were big. I have an EID guy that I like too, but he is about at my top limit because I think he's difficult to handle, and then there is the storage problem in my small house. I would definitely buy more variety of smaller dolls. Tinybear has a small man planned to be similar to her zaftig girls, and I will be happy to buy him when he appears.

    14. I think this question is silly. As Asian ball jointed dolls are, obviously, inspired by Asian aesthetics, the starting point for looking at 'why are all the dolls thin, and why are some extremely thin? And why do some of the girl dolls have grossly large breasts? Is to look toward other forms of Asian artwork like Anime and Manga. My answers would be "Pokemon, XXXHolic, Gurren Lagann"; they are examples of thin, thinnest, and large breasted. Muscular Anime men also appear in Anime, my example being "Fist of the North Star"

Honestly, off the top of my head I can't think of any popular Anime or Manga characters that are heavy-set women.

It's just not part of the original inspiration.

I also love tinybear's fat fairies, btw.

    15. Hm, manga and anime inspiration aside, there are lots of people who cross over to this hobby from collecting fashion and art dolls who like the less stylized and more realistic dolls made by companies like Iplehouse and Soom, and welcome more variety. I think there's room for all sorts of dolls in this hobby, although the anime aesthetic dominates.

    16. I think most people find 'thin' more appealing than 'fat'. It's not just the media/fashion; being fat is not healthy (no offense to anyone, it's a simple fact). Also, these dolls come from Asia-- in Asia most people are thin.

I think it would be cool if there are more body types available on the market but I personally don't need/want "fat" dolls. My dolls are pretty bishounens.

    17. I think it all comes down to economics. If companies today saw a large portion of the doll collecting community clamoring for "big" dolls, you would have sumo sculpts coming out six months from now...

    18. You know, I'd LIKE a fat doll. I'm a big woman, by societal standards(but actually.. average based on the US scale). I'm kind of tired of seeing the twig-thin, waifish figure /everywhere/. In other countries, and even 100 years ago, the ideal beauty was today's size 20.

    19. I remember someone a few years back, when DoA had an area dedicated to people who made their own dolls, made a heavier set BJD. She appealed to me, but I don't think I would ever actually want to have a 'fat doll', mainly because I think the clothing would be a huge issue! I absolutely adore what IH have done with their EID women (and men), and think that is probably as curvy as we can get- it's likely the resin would be more expensive and damn heavy! My Akando just weighs a ton!

Personally, as someone else said, I love the chubbiness of my Volks Suiseiseki, she is small busted and has what seems like puppy fat and thicker set. She is wonderul IMO. I also love my Dollshe boys, who look pretty anorexic in their thinness, but it is their charm and I wouldn't change that.

I don't feel pressurised to do anything but the doll companies- there frankly is a huge variety in doll shapes, from emanciated to cuddly and curvy...I have a range of doll shapes and sizes in my collection.

    20. There is actually a lot of variation in female body types, so you probably aren't really looking hard enough. There's even a very large height differential available for them.

Now, male bodies are much more limited in their variety since people keep pushing for Taller! and More Muscles! and those two things I am not very interested in. My favourite boy body is Volks SD boy body and the Unoa male bodies. Slender, slim, and not overly muscled are perfect for me. It's REALLY hard to find shorter male bodies and would love to see more in the 55-58cm range for them.

There are practical things to take into consideration when making an overweight doll, such as resin being unable to move and shift like fat can, so creating a doll able to really move well would be difficult. It is not coincidence that the best posing body available, Shinydoll, is also one of the thinnest.

In terms of breast size, I either like flat as a board loli chest or huge boobs on my female dolls. No middle ground for me, and luckily I am able to find both types. I also like slender hips and have no desire to own dolls who are realistically proportionate. I like my anime inspired stylization very much and companies such as Iplehouse really do nothing for me.

And as someone who is short and for a long time was short, thin, and with very large breasts (remove the thin and add an extra very and you have me now), I hate hearing all of the feedback that all that breasts like that are impossible. No, they are not. I have a friend who struggles with her weight every day because she is active and eats quite a lot but is unable to keep weight on. People give her the hardest time over it, calling her anorexic and then accusing her of having implants because she happens to have a decent sized chest. She is just as much a real women as someone who is larger.

I suppose it would be nice for those who want an overweight body to be available on the market, but it is not something I would ever buy because I do not find it attractive.
