A fat dollfie.

Dec 30, 2005

    1. this is starting to veer a little off topic, from discussion of fat dolls to discussion of fat people. I think what azuulada meant by "nobody likes being fat" is that in American culture, being fat is regarded as unattractive, and nobody likes to be unattractive, therefore nobody likes being fat. Or at least I think that's what she meant?

      I think there are two reasons for the relative lack of overweight/fat dolls. One being engineering- it has already been pointed out that the (much discussed on Flickr Leeke doll will probably have serious issues with sitting and posing due to her thigh/hip joints. I think heavier, lumpier (for lack of a better word) bodies are harder to make in hard resin, which unlike human skin and tissue, doesn't fold or bend. Making a skeleton hold a pose is easier than making the Michelin Man hold the same pose. I'm not saying the design can't be done, but I'm sure it's a lot less straightforward than making an "ideal body" doll. Tinybear's dolls are probably the best I've seen yet, but she's not a large company.

      The second reason I don't think there are many overweight/fat dolls is the fact that these dolls are consumed by First-World buyers, and in most first world countries, thin is in. In a developing or third world country where ever day is a struggle to survive and food is scarce, having some fat on you is a matter of survival and therefore VERY attractive. In a place where food is easy to come by and most people don't even think twice about their next meal (in the survival sense), food and fat are seen in a very different way. Again, this is veering into an off topic conversation. Also, most doll companies are based in Asia where I'm told there is a strong preference for thinness. This might be imported from Western cutlure, I don't know, but it's there.

      I love my chibi unoas because the legs are shorter and the body chubbier than your average mature BJD, but I wouldn't mind having a heavier doll. I really like the Leeke doll's body, but until this business with DoD gets resolved I just don't think we'll be seeing much of her here. =/

    2. Actually, what you could do for this is get the DDDy body, then get the M bust option part, and cut off the surplus ribcage to fit the Dynamite abdomen--this way, the lower skeleton is already adjusted for that butt, you get the DDDy butt and slightly thicker thighs, but not the invisible pushup bra effect and a more pear-shaped figure. (The arms are the same on both bodies though, strangely enough.) I've considered getting either an M or regular L bust for my girl, because let's face it, sometimes gravity defying cleavage looks weird.

      However, to veer this somewhere relatively on topic, even with the vinyl DDDy body, which is softer on the outside than the inner skeleton is, and thus more flexible than resin to some extent, it's still not as flexible as the DDII body is. ChibiChibiUsa here did a fantastic posability comparison between the two, and the Dynamite hips in particular are definitely restricted. They can pretty much only sit straight up; they can't lean forward or bring their knees to their chests. For Agatha I was willing to deal with it for a figure that better fit her character as drawn in Girl Genius, but it's still vexing enough that there's a good chance my next girl will be a DDII or DDS to bring balance--and be a bit easier to shop for, though really that's as much due to Agatha's particular style as her shape, if not more so, since she basically demands clothes that aren't revealing and are heavily late Victorian influenced.

    3. Engineering of joints in heavier set dolls IS a problem...or at least, they definitely are when MODDING a doll to be heavy set! Like I think I've said before on this thread, I'm modding a mature bust BBB body to be a heavier set character. Figuring out how to do that, and still have workable, pose-able joints is proving to be a bit of a pain...and I've not gotten very far at all with her yet! The first thing I had to do was get rid of the torso-to-hip joint, as there was just NO way to keep it, and add the bulk to her I want...I also had to cut her top torso piece off right under the breasts, too, as the upper rib-cage that was already there...just was NOT going to work. I'm waiting to shape the inside of that top torso piece until I have the rest of the torso modded, to be sure I get a good fit, with as much range of motion as possible. Figuring out how to deal with the hip-to-thigh joint is hard, too...because, by the time the torso mods are done, she might look rather...funny...without modding the thighs some, to bulk them out a little. And doing THAT, while still keeping the joint usable, well...I'm not sure how to work that out properly. Right now, I'm really just hoping that the already clunky, chunky look of the BBB arms and legs will do well with the rest of the doll once the torso mods are done, without the need to mod them.

      And looking at that...I'm sure it would be just as hard to get all the right shapes, in the right places, and still have mobile joints that pose well. And it WOULD take a lot more resin to cast a fat doll than it does the current 'ideal' dolls. Unless you cast them so that they're rather hollow in the fatest parts...but I don't think that would be an even remotely good idea. Hollow parts get damaged more easily when they're too thinly cast, and being hollow makes them less mod-able, which I would think would take away from the sell-ability of them. I think it'd be easier to take a doll that was 'too fat' for the heavier set size and shape you want, and sand them down than it's proving to be to take a 'too thin' doll and mod them to be heavier. But if the parts are hollow, you can't do that. That's one of the things that's giving me trouble with my SD BBB girl...needing her to have an even remotely thinner waistline isn't going to happen with her original resin parts, they just aren't cast thick enough to sand them down in shape and size AT ALL. So to have that problem with a hollow/thinly cast fat doll that you want to take down in size just a little...well...I think that could greatly affect the number of people willing to buy the doll to begin with. So, in my view, the best thing for any company willing to make and sell a fat doll, is to cast them more solidly, using more resin, and so needing a higher price, so that people have the resin to work with to mod and alter the doll to their own 'ideal' shape. Assuming that last bit from me made sense...it's closing in on 2AM here, and I'm tired. Heh.

      And then...besides the whole 'thin is in' factor, that we really CAN'T ignore, even if we want something different...you do have the whole 'how to cloth them' thing, too. And I'm pretty sure that most companies take that into consideration when making a new doll. The harder it is to dress the doll, the less likely people are to buy it. Not everyone like to make their own dolly clothes, and not everyone likes to have to commission outfits, either. Even the Resinsoul super-slim girls, who are hard to dress, can share Narae, some MNF, and other slim mini clothes with little to no altering. But a fat doll...well, we might want them, and love them...but unless you sew, or are willing to commission clothes, how would we dress them? So to come up with, and release, a new, fat doll, a company would also then have to come up with and release clothing for it. And if the doll doesn't sell well, the clothes won't sell well...and then they run a HIGH risk of being out FAR more money than they can afford just in the costs of coming up with this new doll, and clothes for it, let alone in actually MAKING some if they have things like clothes as 'in stock' instead of pre-order items. So I can see why there aren't more. But I hope that those of us who want them, will make it known enough that just MAYBE some companies, instead of just individual artists, will listen, and release one or two to test the waters. Until then, I'll live with modding, and dreams of my little fat fairy Coco, and any other fat dollies that I might be lucky enough to see.

    4. Ah, thanks for the advice. The crazy cleavage can be fun, but I don't think it's something I want to own. Makes the doll harder to buy tops for, and I'm just less into large breasts. All of my current girls are small to medium in bust size, and it's definitely my preference to stay that way. I'm going to have to remember this for the future, as I really like everything else about the DDDy body.

      That makes total sense. For me, not a problem as I wouldn't need as high a level of posability as some of the other vinyl dolls I'm working on that are from a specific story line. She would just be her own thing, but I do think this outlines some potential difficulties with engineering heavy set resin bodies, since they aren't quite as posable as the vinyl dolls to begin with. Not that it would be a big issue for all buyers -- not everyone is as concerned about posability, yet there has been so much interest in different/better jointing systems and highly posable dolls, that I can see where it might give a doll company pause to go that way.

    5. There's a lot of dolls that are chubby adorable little things. I know it's not the same thing as being exactly "fat" but it's also not exactly the stick standard of thinness either. (Sorry if any of these were mentioned already) Some of the Domadoll sculpts are kinda chubby. The cooki is a bit thicker, and Okki has the most adorable little love handles! And also the wonderful Dust of Dolls Puns is adorably chubby!

      I think though (as many have already said) that if the dolls were too heavy they wouldn't be able to pose correctly and that is why that chubby is about all we're going to get really. But there are some WONDERFULLY chubby sculpts out there even if they are few and far between!

    6. i'm confused why pear-shaped with a big butt/hips and small boobs is considered "stylized"? (i've seen that term used on the doll-selling websites, too). isn't it realistic if it looks like lots of real people? or maybe should i get a t-shirt that says "i'm not FAT, i'm STYLIZED"?

      anyway, i hope i can get a Püns one day! and some of those Domadoll ones maybe the one that is chunky AND has the funny nice eyes.

    7. Once the proportions become humanly impossible they are stylized. All dolls are stylized to some degree, most to be an ideal of beauty but once everything goes pear shaped then you are getting into cartoon like proportions that are an over exaggeration of what you'd see in real life.

    8. The Puns is a bit stylized, yes, but I also know a few folks who really are that shape!

    9. Oww its sad for these french artist
      I want one of those new Leekeworld dolls if they don't cancel theyre orders. That I hope they will of course for those artists sake

      I have a big crush on the big hips dolls and those are just woaw. With the little upper torso they look like characters from a Comics

    10. iplehouse Jessica is kind of plump i think thats why i want her sooo bad.

    11. How many would actually be interested in commissioning Nobility Doll for a chunkier boy body? :chibi
      It's been on my mind forever. Hope it's not already been brought up, too tired to read the whole thread right now. ^^;;

    12. I think it completely depends on how the doll is sculpted -- just being basically pear shaped is not necessarily stylized -- it depends on how the proportions of the body parts work together and how much exaggeration there is. To me the French doll does definitely have a more exaggerated look to her body. It's not that the various traits she has are unrealistic, it's the way they are combined together that give her the feel of not being a typical human. Or at least, that was *my* immediate reaction to the doll (who really is quite cute).

    13. I see more than enough fat people when i walk out the door. I rather not know if there are acrually fat dollfies....pudgie maybe but not fat. Not that i have problems with fat people....but you have less to lift with a trim doll. =)

    14. If you have to qualify a statement with "Not that I have problems with ...", if it's for race, gender, sexual orientation, or body type, then you probably do. Especially if you start your statement the way you did.

      Could we please keep the bashing out of the thread and focus on the pros and cons of larger dolls, instead of people?

    15. Gee, thanks for letting us know you do have a problem with fat people-- if you didn't, you wouldn't say things like "I see more than enough fat people when I walk out the door". Doubt you'd say that about other whole groups of people... fatphobia's always great to see first thing when I get online >>;

      Anyway, I'd love to see more fat and chubby dolls. I might not buy them myself (I'm very picky, lol) but I would looove to look at them. Seeing even one doll that looked remotely like me would be nice ;w;

    16. what she said.

    17. QFT. Regardless of the intent of the post in question, the wording definitely left a sour taste in my mouth, and gave the impression of having a problem.

    18. I actually love the diversity that I've increasingly seen over the years in terms of body shapes and body styles for BJDs. If I had more money, I would absolutely love to get an Aoi-Tukihime for one of my gals as well as a Sharmistha body to mod (I would love to mod one of these bodies to have an itty bitty waist and gigantic hips). I really love variety! I have dolls that are taller and thinner (Spiritdoll Proud), short and pear-shaped (Notdoll Lady line), taller with more curves (I-Doll and Iplehouse EID), and thinner (Supia). I have also modded my SD10 body to be more mature (nipped in the waist and accentuated the hips and bottom), but maintained her small breasts.

    19. Every body has something beautiful about it, be they a size 2 or 20. I would LOVE to see some dolls with different figures, and find myself drawn to those with bigger booties or thighs, or a more "mature" (i.e. not a teenager) body. The Sharmistha is beautiful, but I would rather have a different face, and high heeled feet (and perhaps more in proportion to her body...they seem really tiny).
