A fat dollfie.

Dec 30, 2005

    1. Actually I'd really love a proper meaty man doll who was a bit overweight and masculine, even hairy. Although I do like the pretty boy dolls and appreciate the almost androgynous nature of many dolls, wouldn't it be great to finally nail that hunky rugby type guy, even if it were just a doll :) Could be a winning range, sports guys, soldiers, lumberjacks etc.. proper men :) If someone could make me a lifesize Raphael Ibanez Id be very happy indeed :)

    2. Oh my...My Mokuba ( KD Jeong ) is chubby and has no boobs! I know I know...I'm crazy >.<

She's an older body '05 ish and if I put her next to Asherel ( DZ Hid ) He has more curves then she does! It absolutely drives me insane.

Just so I don't give anyone the wrong idea...I like her body. It just doesn't fit her character. And since Asherel is her boyfriend they're always together...and I'm always noticing how more girly his form is then hers.

      I'd take pictures if I could..but I lost my camera charger...gao..

    3. I'd certainly appreciate a wider range of body types seeing as a large factor for these dolls is their uniqueness and art. I wouldn't say make an actual fat doll, but chubby or with emphasis on different shapes of the body. Most girl bodies start to look the same if you're not paying attention in this hobby. I say this because a chracter of mine is chubby, but to further this discussion I really wish their were more athletic girl bodies. Another doll I'm planning is a tall muscle-defined girl and I'm not at all looking forward to all the necessary modding. And to DonnaR, an overweight man is not a "proper" man as men can be perfectly masculine without a pudgey face or belly. Rugged men such as you described will normally be lean, not fat. I do understand how you'd get tired of us androgynous guys, here in the doll community we're a dime a dozen (well... figuratively) :)

    4. Just a note: Thin bodies are realistic, too. All body types are realistic if a real person has them. But I do understand what you guys mean to say. I just wanted to point it out in case others are sensitive about their body type like I am. :/

Although I probably won't get one, I'd also appreciate more diversity. I like seeing different types of dolls, and the ingenuity and creativeness behind them. However, while I'd like to see more body types such as pear shaped ones and chubby ones (and a tall, slightly immature, msd girl with a decent chest), I do recognize the limits of making them. Some things people want will be limited by demand, posing ability of the body type, and proportion. Sharmistha has an interesting body but her face and feet do not look right.

Somehow, I think it would be better as custom dolls. And depending on the popularity, people can ask other companies to make dolls like that one, and so on. Companies will respond if enough people ask for it, but the majority buys their thinner dolls, so they see no point to making anything but.

    5. I would personally love to see a cute chubby girl!!! I love the skinny dolls but there are other body types..

    6. I agree with what has been said about Sharmistha though--I am not in love with her head or feet unfortunately.

I think more and more people are seeing that custom dolls offer an opportunity to get the body types you want without poking companies to sculpt the type you like. :) For example, I saw a wonderful muscular and athletic custom female body GO that a dedicated group are doing through Nobility Doll. I really hope that even more people will do this because I am seeing some beautiful custom works!

    7. I would love a fat a doll so much! With big arms, big legs, a bit of a round tummy. I would love that! I hope some day to have dolls of my original characters, and a few of them are very thin, but I have some chubby girls who I would love to have. But I might need to make those myself. :/

    8. Did anyone mention the DM Kids and their thighs? It's very difficult to sew for a doll like that. Just now I was able to get a pair of pants that actually fit her to some degree (I made a mistake in the rise height as well as the leg length). The rise is too low, but it still pretty much fits. I'm proud I got pants that she can fit in - period.

    9. I agree completely. :thumbup

From an aesthetic standpoint, we humans love to look as pretty things, from the being of time and unto the end. While an overweight or curvy doll might be interesting, I really can't see it fairing very well on the market with the way most cultures idealism thin. If fat sold, we wouldn't see so many twigs in magazines. (personally I would like to see a BJD with a little more hip)

On the other hand, rolly-polly chubby babies and children we see iinstinctively as cute, which is why you will find a lot of the smaller dolls with a belly (and why mother's don't eat their own young). :XD:

EDIT: I felt that I needed to clarify, I don't think all people buy into the 'thin is the only beauty' but that whatever our society perceives as beautiful, we usually want, and we tend to reject what isn't. Not everyone, but most. Heck, look back a few hundred years ago a little fat around the middle was perceived as beautiful because it meant you were wealthy and well fed. Of course now the stereotype is that you eat too much and are lazy. We want and like beautiful things, whatever it is we perceive as beautiful. And having been overweight myself for most of my life I will honesty say, I love drawing real life 'fat' people, the more rolls the better, because they have so much character and are way easier to draw they skinning people. They are the best people to hug because they've got mass and are all big and squishes and I don't feel like they will break in half if I hug them too hard, but I would never buy an overweight BDJ. Nothing against them, but I looked at a fat girl in the mirror for most of my life. I don't want to look at one on my shelf.

    10. The most probable reason in my opinion for the rarity or non-existence of "plus-sized" dolls is the difficulty in posing and balancing out such a body. The were some entries in this thread already pointing out that fat has a different structure than resin.

I would say that additionally to its relatively smaller weight, its tendency to be dynamic, and its being influenced by gravitation, fat as a tissue has a distinct way to "behave" on a human body. It can be compressed to a certain degree when a person moves or bends a limb or the body, while resin couldn't. Also, the skeleton frame of a plus-sized person is still the same as the one of a thin person, while the visible shape is different. This would be hard to impossible to rebuilt in resin (the joints would have to be set deeper, thus limiting the movement range). This is why we will probably see (absolutely lovely!) exagerrated hip shapes in artist dolls like the Püns (Dust of Dolls) or Briseis (Enaibi) - or in Leeke's controversial Mikhaela, with hip joints (or joint centers) set far apart, but not a realistical "junk in the trunk" type of hip (often narrow in bone structure but with a layer of fat on the outside).

And it is even more difficult with the rest of the body. Setting shoulders too far apart would not be welcomed as much as the (evolutionally caused) aesthetic of the wide hips, expecially in a female doll. A realistic large bust out of resin would reduce the movement range of the arms. Solid resin legs with a greater circumference would allow less sitting poses.

Personally, what I see as beautiful in real life is far from skinniness, and I assume there are many more people who share my ideal (most men I know don't consider "skinny" as attractive, they want "shapely", "curvy", or "muscular" :|), but I don't see the kind of doll body I see as the prettiest to be created any time soon. Simply because resin would not depict it well enough. Maybe a vinyl glove on an ABS skeleton would work better (hints to Obitsu), since vinyl is soft and can show the flexibility that fat has.

Also, I don't see the "chubby" baby BJDs as chubby. Real children have rounded stomachs, cheeks and limbs when they are of average weight, and even if they slightly underweight, too. So this dollies, in my opinion, depict "child" rather than "plus-sized".

But anyway, skinny dollies are better than no dollies ;) And I must admit, if a really skinny doll is special in its features and well made, it can be absolutely fascinating and evoke "want to buy"-feelings in me too (looks at the new Dolls Chateau dolls...)

    11. Like others have said regarding clothes and BJDs, companies already have a varied amount of doll sizes, regardless of height. Having a doll with nowhere near any existing proportions would put a lot of people off from owning the doll. First and foremost, if you don't sew your doll's clothes yourself (for whatever reason), you better hope there is a big Dollmore-sized selection of clothes to choose from on whatever site is selling the doll. It's going to be hard for people who don't really want to sew or spend extra on commissions to own such a doll because a lot would not fit. You wouldn't even be able to let clothes out because there isn't enough fabric to do that at all.

Not only that, but it would also be quite difficult to get the same look on a larger doll. Like others have mentioned, certain things just don't look as good as they do on thinner bodies. As a larger girl myself, I can accept that pulling off a slim-lined, sleek look is going to be quite difficult because I'm not even of an average size. I've been this way my entire life, so I know that certain styles that might look cute on a smaller girl won't look that good - or can look terrible - on someone my size. I'm not bothered by that, either, but it's still hard to shop for clothes. Only, I'm harder than most because I have specific criteria of the fit of things.

But to go on-topic again, I can only imagine that it would be just as difficult to shop for a 'fat' BJD as it has been for me, and I'd rather go for a thinner doll if I can avoid the headache.

Another thing I've thought up is the friction; if one were to make a "fat" BJD, there would have to be some degree of wear in the clothes from constantly having things like pants rubbing together. At least with thinner dolls, the worst you have to fear is things being 'eaten' by joints, but clothes can perpetually last forever if treated the right way.

    12. So after trying to search for a thread regarding chubby dolls, I only came up with an archived topic that was years old. :c

My question is this: How many 'fat' or 'full figured' dolls are there out there? I myself, have only stumbled across one (http://yuusuisdollworkshop.wordpress.com/). I absolutely adore the concept of a larger doll!
I admire the beauty of slim dolls like the rest of us, but I would love to see dolls that more of us could relate to on a physical level (Because lets face it, not all of us wear a size 2!).

So do you guys know of any others? I would love to see some bigger dolls out there!

    13. Oh, I was just about to link you to Sharmistha. That's the only properly larger figured doll I know of. I would love to see more too, but there's not that many out there. The reasons for which are myriad, and generally centre around discussions of realistic posing ability, market demand, and what is considered aesthetically attractive either by culture or by traditional doll physiques.
Here is another discussion. And another. And yet another. As you can see, the doll community has been discussing this for years (you can also use the search bar).

    14. Thanks so much for the links! Its good to know I'm not the only one whose thought about this before. I honestly think it would be so unusual to see that it'd be a hit. Finding clothes would be a challenge, however.

Oh, and for the record! I think it would be amazing to see a 'pregnant' doll. It would make a wonderful gift for an expectant mother. However, I have a feeling as doll such a that would have a lot of falling issues with the additional midsection weight.

    15. There's Tinybear's/The Sleeping Elf's Coco and Bonbon, they're fullfigured but only yo-sd size: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sleepingelf/sets/72157622690150671/ And Domadoll Okja, she's even smaller than yo-size I believe, but chubby (nude doll ahead): http://www.domadoll.com/okja/images/domadoll_11.jpg

The only other dolls that come to mind that are somewhat close to being fuller figured are the pear shaped girls from Leeke (MSD) and Doll Chateau (yo-SD), but as big a tush as they have, they still have thin arms, flat bellies and tiny or no breasts.

    16. While the EID girl isn't chubby, I think of her as rather full figured which is why I have her on my wishlist.

The Anson body from Dollzone is beautifully pear shaped....her hips are almost as big as some SD hips.

    17. I would like to see more too! Expect i want a BOY. And not "wide hips/pear shaped", that is not chubby. I want a fat guy. lol

    18. Hm, I only know the DollChateau Babies which are quite sturdy.

    19. I agree! If there was a really nice realistic looking boy, I would so buy him.
