1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

AirTags….a good anti-theft measure for bjd?

Feb 4, 2022

    1. So not too long ago, Apple created AirTags. Similar to a tile, but traceable down to the inch. Literally you can track it to the point that it basically says “here”. Has anyone opted to use an AirTag on your doll? I know that sometimes theft is an issue in our community, especially with rarer dolls. I feel like an AirTag could easily be hot glued inside the torso for your treasured dolls so that it is 100% traceable should anyone steal these expensive treasures we love so much.
You can even name the airtag a specific name.
      opinions?
I am definitely considering this option for a few of my more expensive dolls.

    2. I have thought about using AirTags for other things, but if you are going to be in a situation where you think your dolls could get lost or stolen, I think this is a good idea.
Personally, I am not very concerned about my dolls being stolen, but if I were going to a busy convention or something and brought a few with me, I would consider doing this.

    3. This is a really good idea. A lot of the instances of theft I've read about have been when the doll's owner is traveling - to a meet-up or convention, and the doll is stolen from a parked vehicle or when the owner's back is turned momentarily. I'm not a fan of Apple, but I would consider using it - I really want to visit Japan and take my Dollfie Dream with me. I would feel so much better about traveling with her if she was tagged.

    4. I'm not really sure this is a useful idea. If you're at a convention, your doll could end up at the other side of the country at the end of the weekend! Even if you did track down the stolen doll, confronting the person could end up much worse than losing a doll. I'm not sure how police deal with lost phones that are being tracked, but I'd rather not risk my life over a doll or phone.

If they took the doll but ditched it, it would be useful. Or if you somehow misplaced it. Either way I think it's best to keep your eyes on your dolls at all times when leaving the house so you don't end up in a situation where you need to track it down.

    5. It wouldn't be useful for me, as my dolls rarely leave my home, and when they do, they're either in a family member's home, locked hotel room or in my arms. The chances of them being stolen or lost are near zero. (I know things can go missing from hotel rooms and have had it happen, but considering I travel with a doll less than once every few years, I'm not overly worried about it.) For someone who does travel with their dolls often, may have to have them checked in luggage, is in hotels frequently, moves often, sends them out for work or to visit others or whatever, it might be something worth looking into.

    6. I feel like if your doll is stolen and you immediately notice it and use the device to track it, you could call the police to deal with it. No one is suggesting you risk your life over a doll. But you could easily track the stolen item to a room or wherever and then call police to deal with it. Not to mention if the dolls are in a bag and a non doll person stole the bag and ditched it, you could easily find the bag when they do. It’s always worth a shot. Especially being that the AirTags are like 30 bucks. Once a long time ago back when I first got into the hobby, someone tried to lift my doll bag out of the front floorboard of my car. I caught the person and police were called. Lol but this would have made a situation like that a lot easier. Let’s also not forget that the AirTag can be pinged from your phone. So if cops show up to assist, you could ping the AirTag and that alone would provide proof of ownership.

    7. It could, possibly, be useful but strikes me as being a bit... well... paranoid.

I've been taking my dolls (of all types, not just BJD) to all sorts of places and events (conventions, historical reenactments, historic sites, parks restaurants, picnics, indoor and outdoor meets, parties, barbecues etc) and have never had any stolen. I'm in my fifties and am a lifelong doll collector. I've been taking dolls places for over three decades. Not a single doll theft.

Yes BJDs are expensive, but few outside of the doll community realize how much they cost (and wouldn't know where to sell them if they did know they were valuable) so there's little reason an opportunist thief woul steal one on the basis of the potential resale value. Most non doll people (and even doll people who aren't into BJDs) have no idea of the prices involved. Most are of the doll = child's toy = not valuable enough to bother with mindset. Even those who have some idea of collectables world (which would be a higher number at a convention, admittedly) wouldn't necessarily think of a doll that way.

Which leaves the chance of someone within the community doing the stealing, then wiping the faceup and restyling to prevent it being recognized when they share their newest acquisition within the community (which is still a little risky if people know they were at the event where a doll of that sculpt was stolen and suddenly they have one of that sculpt in their collection, or for sale). Yes there HAVE been thefts of dolls, but relatively few gien the number of occasions, places and events overall, so certainly not enough occurences to warrant electronically tagging a doll youre taking somewhere with you... In my opinion.

Of course, everybody has their own opinion and comfort levels, so if it's what you want to do with yours - You do you.

    8. Japan is relatively safe, compared to other parts of the world which I had been to. I had a girl running after me to give me a 50 yen coin I unknowingly dropped. The Japanese, in general, are honest. Of course, there are exceptions. If it goes missing in a Japanese building or train station , usually it ends up in the lost and found department.
