Allergic reaction to resin?

May 30, 2005

    1. I pierced my doll's ears the day I received her and I have asthma. Beats me if it was resin smell or not, but has I was piercing her ears , it gave off a wierd sweet-like smell. I had to cover up my mouth because I have troubles breathing after >.<

    2. Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, but I am afraid I am VERY allergic to doll resin or maybe I'm just paranoid. Can someone help me figure this out?

I just went to a doll meet Saturday and I had a small headache just before I came in contact with my first doll. Well after walking around/carrying a different doll I guess I stopped noticing my headache but I started to get a ringing in my right ear (I got dizzy but I ignored it). Right after I got home I got terribly sick and vomited twice...I still have a head and stomach ache..

Could this be an allergy to the dolls I was carrying around?

    3. It is possible but I am not so sure.... Did you start getting a headache before touching a doll? Do you have a skin rash or difficulty breathing? The dizziness and vomiting could be a reaction to sealant. Can you remember if their was a smell like spray paint; sealant can smell like that. That might make me sick too. Did you feel much better shortly after..um..vomiting? I think it sounds more like sensitivity to sealant or resin dust..or something you ate earlier. If you felt better after emptying your stomach then it could be something you ate. That does not sound like a typical allergic reaction to me; more like a sensitivity to something. If you were that badly allergic to resin I think you would have a rash where the doll touched your skin.

    4. To answer one question it probably was something I ate (less likely because I still felt bad afterwards) or just the quick weather change from one day raining to being out in the bright sun..I didn't get any rashes or anything so I must just be paranoid. :sweat

I may be sensative..even though the dolls didn't have a smell but afterwards my sense of smell was heightened..in which any smell afterwards made me nauseous..Thanks for answering me louiselle~

    5. Well it could be the resin fumes. Or it could be fabric softener from the doll's clothing. Or it could have been something in the a/c system. Or it could have been someone's perfume. In a case like that where you are being exposed to so MANY factors you can't narrow it down to just one.

Now here is something you might do when you get your doll. If you get it from someone here in the States you can ask them to hold it and air it out for you until the smell goes away. Basically it should be completely unwrapped and laid on an open shelf somewhere safe and dark.

If you are getting it from overseas, perhaps you can find a place in your own home to do that, or a trusted friend could do the same.

    6. I get an allergy from sanding them..mainly my soom girls..for some reason..I have done my Shushu girls and others and never had a problem, but with my Soom girls my eye swelled up and became goopy..almost like conjunctivitis {pink eye} so I have to watch touching my face or eyes when I sand.

    7. You are welcome. I was just thinking it could also have been that something in your inner ear was not in its propper position. Sometimes the little bones in are ears get out of position causing dizziness and headaches. The dizziness in itself can cause one to become quite nauseous.
I think what Victoria Victrix said to do is a good idea just in case it was a sensitivity to resin. I have no reason to think I am allergic to resin(I'm paranoid)but when I received my first resin doll head I had gloves and a mask just in case there was dust.

    8. I'd like to see someone make a respirator for their BJD and take some photos of that!

    9. Hi everyone,

Just less than a week ago, I received my first doll. Since getting my Luts Senior Delf, I've had nosebleeds, headaches, coughing, and sores in my throat.

I have handled one other doll before (a Volks SD girl) and have not had any negative reaction whatsoever.

      So now I ask:

Has anyone ever heard of being allergic to one company's resin, versus another?
Also, has anyone ever had this sort of reaction to their Luts doll?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or is a topic that has been addressed elsewhere. I am very interested in hearing anyone's advice, experience with resin allergy, and opinions about safety and different companies.

    10. Hmm. Was the doll second hand?
Maybe your reacting to a mold or spore? Possibly on the clothing or wig?

    11. no, unfortunately, he's straight from Luts as of last Saturday. He has very strong fumes and scent to him, which has not entirely diminished after his first bath. I hope that leaving him to sit over the weekend to air out will also help.

    12. I hope you're feeling better! I saw my doctor and mine was just flu so I hope you will be ok! *hugs* :aheartbea

I left Lysander out for airing and opened his box to air after I got him- the smell has diminished, only small traces of it left-- so maybe airing will help!!

      *tiny bump for you >__<

    13. It could be the mold release, the box material, the cushions. Toxicity varies between types of resin, I know that match.

I'd suggest taking his head off and getting someone to scrub the body down with like, a brush. I've only ever had a reaction to resin when breathing it in. Dun do that XD But it was a lot, not just from handling a doll.

But yeah, leave him to air.

    14. How unsettling! So sorry you are feeling such nasty symptoms!!!:(
Sometimes a nice large dose of vitamin C can help the body clear a toxic or allergic overload. I use the little envelopes of EmergenC. Drink lots of water too. This can help even if it is illness rather than toxicity. You want to flush whatever it is out of your system. I find the vitamin C somehow helps regulate the fluid in my cells - my lips and fingers get stiff and puffy from retained water when my body is stressed from lack of sleep or some overload. A packet of the EmergenC soothes my throat and the swelling goes away. Worth a try anyway.

Some people are much more chemically sensitive than others. I recall quite a while ago a new DoA member was so affected by her first BJD, she decided she had to sell it. Do you have reactions to other toxins like perfume, cleaners, ink, etc? It may take longer than a weekend for your doll to outgas.

I remember that when we built our home and worried about the toxic overload from new paint and flooring and such, we were advised before we moved in, to close up all the doors and windows and turn the furnace up to about 85 and kind of cook the whole place for a day or 2. Then we were to open the window and air it out. The heating helps the materials to outgas faster, otherwise it can take months. I am not sure if this is advisable with a resin doll though. But possibly putting it in a room with a heater - like a bathroom - might help the nasty smell and symptoms go away.

      Best of luck to you!!!

I have mostly Volks dolls and there is usually a strong resin smell opening the box and it can remain for some time. I had one doll coated with MSC and she was so strongly scented from that I got asthma for a few days. She is perhaps 2 years old now and I don't smell the odor anymore.

It seems plausible that different companies have different recipes for their resin. I sure notice differences in texture and tensile strength.

    15. I have breathing problems so this might pertain to me...though, I have a question. I haven't recieved my first doll yet, but how do you 'air it out'?

EDIT: Oh, and I heard about bathing it. How do you bathe it? Will it ruin the doll? D:

    16. There's a very helpful Sticky at the top of the Painting, Customizing, and Esthetics forum, with links to a lot of information about cleaning and maintenance of BJDs: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174733

Also, you will probably find VinylFaerie's BJD_WTF useful, as well as the FAQs for new DoA members/BJD owners:

    17. yumenoir ~ You need to make an appointment with your physician. Quite obviously, if you do suffer from some rare form of allergy, you need to deal with this, if not, your symptoms certainly sound like something that should be attended to.

Cynthia in FlintHills has done the searching you need - please follow some of those links.

      Good luck.

    18. There still may be resin dust on him,

      You never know...

      Air him out?

I hope you feel better *hugs*

    19. While it's possible that you do have an allergy, it's also possible that it's a coincidence your symptoms arrived when your doll did. I agree with Zagzagel...go see your doctor for his/her opinion!
