Angel Egg Resin Dolls by Marmite Sue

May 30, 2012

1. Galacticat - Oh your girls are so pretty! Love your Carousel! What an amazing paint job. Now I'd love to try my hand at a lace body with some metallic paint. You're right that they are a unique size. I have my Angel Eggs sitting apart from everyone else.

Shashy - I've done a lot of faceups but I've never spray painted anything. So don't feel you have to go that route. A really wonderful (and extremely successful) artist friend of mine said it doesn't matter what you use, it's only the end result that matters. That was very encouraging to me because I had set out to use airbrush but I just hate the whole noise and hassle of it. Use what you're comfortable with! I look forward to seeing your girl because she will have her own, unique look!

I was so lucky to recently acquire a natural body Una. I hope to have pics soon.

2. Please post a picture of your face-up- I'd love to see!

My dolls are resin- the shoes were an accessory that Eli made for a short period of time (along with the lace corset piece). I think that before she ended up abandoning the resin line, she had plans to expand it with all kinds of little pieces you could fit to your doll...

I didn't thread my own ribbon, both girls were finished by Marmite Sue. I know she used to send a "lacing" tool with the Dentelle bodies that were not pre-laced- I'm not sure what that looked like, but I bet someone here does?

3. I was just reading that the best way to do that- is to glue the new ribbon edge to the existing ribbon- and then gently tug it through. Since you will be painting in between, maybe you could glue or tie something like a fishing line to tug that through- then when painting is complete, tie ribbon to the line and tug back through the ribbon.

Jay looking forward to seeing your doll!

4. I'm pretty sure they are wide-eyed beading needles. They are very thin and flexible and the eye is most of the length of the needle, so you can place the end of a ribbon in the eye, and then just use the flexible needle for threading through the open resin lace.

Eli threaded my ribbons on my girls, but included a needle in their box.

5. Jay, you misunderstood me. I meant the MSC spray after painting. I could never do the spray painting. I use water colour pencils and pastel chalk, mostly the chalks. Jay, I realize who you are now and you actually painted a DT Momo for me that I love with wonderful mani/pedi. I have even looked at your face you did to get ideas. Most of my dolls have been painted by others but I have done a couple faceups. I thought these dolls would be fun to do and the good thing is if it looks awful I can always ship it out. I will post a picture soon of my Una face. My pictures don't look as good as the actual doll.

I did did get a threading tool with my doll. It is a kind of soft wire thing you use to thread the ribbon through. The parts will have to be pulled out of the joints to get to the middle so I can get the ribbon through. I looked at her tutorial on this. It is not easy but I will persevere. I will figure it out somehow.

Gee I wish she was still doing these resin parts. I would like those gold shoes or at least the Rococo shoe feet. I have the flat feet and the plain high heel feet. I am not crazy about them. They look kind of like deformed feet. I will try and paint them like they are shoes. I much prefer the Rococo feet but she was out of them. I was lucky to even get this doll. I basically got one of her last resins.

I wonder why she is not doing the resin any more. That is not good news for people that do their own painting. Jay, have you done these dolls. They are suited to your painting. You do a nice delicate look.

6. The ribbon threading tool is a very flexible, curved piece of wire that is doubled over. It's pretty easy to use it to thread the ribbon through. With the way it's curved you just poke it down into one hole & it pops right out the second one. It took me a couple tries at first but now it only takes me about 15 minutes to re-ribbon an entire girl. My Dentelle Ilai is left blank, so I change up her ribbon often. I have no plans to ever paint her. The gold shoes are great! I'm glad I got some when they came out. I'm hoping the resin line will be picked back up someday.

7. You can make a threader yourself with wire.

8. Shashy - you're right, I did misunderstand! LOL! So, never mind! :-)

I'm enjoying all these hints about threading the ribbon even though I don't have a lace body. Good information because I think I would like to get a lace body someday.

9. I suspect

1) it sounds like the resin casts don't last nearly as long as had been hoped, so probably the dolls are more expensive and time consuming to make than anticipated.
2) Much like Marina of Enchanted Dolls- she is probably a bit bored with the resin line- and doesn't have time to keep that up as well as explore her new Moonglass line. If the Moonglass doesn't work out, she might do some resins again. Artists are a fickle bunch ;)

10. Stella Marris I was thinking the same thing about the threader. It is pretty simple.

Renee-_chan I doubt it will ever take me 15 minutes to do the threading. I think it will take 15 minutes to get it through the first hole! Is your face painted? I kind of like my doll with her face painted and a blank body but I will do mani/pedi for sure.

Galacticat I guess you are correct on the bored part. A lot of us are like that. I do a lot of different sewing and doll things and I go from project to project. The fun part is planning it and getting started and then I want to start something new. Right now I am trying to finish stuff. I still like it all so it does no good sitting in my office or sewing room unfinished. Total waste of money too. I have nightmares about if I died what would happen to all my stuff!! My husband and kids wouldn't have a clue to the value of everything.

Do the molds not last long? I would have thought they would all last the same amount of time no matter what was being poured into them. I can't say I am crazy about that moon glass stuff. Maybe I need to see it in person.

11. Personally, as someone who works with molds in my university, I would say the material of the mold matters more than what is put inside it. A plaster mould, usually used with clay, can last a very long time with basic forms. If she casts the holes/lace in plaster, I have no idea how she would get it out. Silicon on the other hand is amazing for that kind of details and as it is flexible, undercuts are easier to work around. But these molds are expensive and with ae's level of detail, I doubt they last long. To put this into context, I made a mold of a piece of knitting, with many severe undercuts, and was only able to get 5 good casts before the mold was unusable

12. Yeah I read something like that on one of her blogs (a while back) that they had hoped to get more casts from the molds- but due to the level of detail (lacing) the molds were not useable after only 3 or 4 casts. This lead to some serious delays- which is probably why she mentioned it in her blog.

Shashy- I really can't blame Eli (or even Marina) for getting bored or not finishing up projects that they had hoped to do- I can hardly even get ONE project completely finished. I have so many 2/3 completed art projects... it's sad really.

13. Galacticat, welcome to my world. I don't know why I am like that. I think for me it has something to do with my striving for perfection. I am rarely happy with what I have done. I redo and redo stuff until I am almost happy. I am never totally happy. I have friends that do project quickly but I always find things that are not perfect. I just can't do that. That being said I have now painted two faces and kid of happy but might repainted them sometime. I want to get the body done so have to move on. I also need to make a other wig.I bought the white curly one and make a brown mohair but would like to make a black or dark brown wig. I don't have mohair for that but do have some dark red hair so will try to see how it looks. Finding nice wefted mohair is not easy.

i also noticed Eli has some face plates still available on her website. I am wondering if I should buy a couple. That way I can still have the painted face but another to paint to make better. They won't be available forever. I am kind of in painting mode at the moment and since I don't do it all the time it is better to continue while I am all practiced up. I wish I could get those Rococo feet or the shoes she made. I sprayed the feet yesterday so today I will do some feet blushing and manicures if I have time. I should really be doing some house cleaning but painting is so much more fun and fulfilling.

14. I'd love to see your progress!

I do see those faceplates up there- but you might want to send her an email, since I don't think she keeps her site very updated (it still says she is accepting orders for Pink Dentelle and I KNOW that's wrong)

15. Thanks Galacticat for the suggestion. I will think about whether or not I really need any more faceplates and if I feel I do I will contact her. I have two faces and one body so really I should not need any more. You are right about the bodies not being for sale. I actually got my body after they were sold out and had a choice between New and Pink and chose pink which was the most recent. There were some bodies she was going to keep for herself but then decided to sell them. I lucked out.

i put some pictures on my Flickr so will try to get a picture on here. I need to use my Computer for that. Haven't figured out how to do it from my iPad. Actually I don't think you can.

16. So Eli sent out emails to those on her list for ordering her new dolls. However, it's kind of unclear what the dolls will really look like when done. The links/photos I think are of the resin dolls- although there are some pictures of the Moonglass dolls - I don't see any finished I think? I think I will order- but I do wish there were better photos!

I am glad she is trying new things- but I hope she does a resin cast of Faberge in the future- such an oddly beautiful little doll!

17. Galacticat, and could you let us know about the price for the moonglass dolls? I supose it's much more than the resin ones, but I would like to know if I will be able to afford one even in the future.

18. The moonglass are much higher than resin imo, the natural body is $1000 minimum (w/o shipping) and the new de tells body is $2100

19. I'm just going to jump right in here.

The moon glass dolls are quite large though, aren't they?
I wonder if Eli will offer her 38cm sized dolls cast in Moonglass at any point.

Of course I can understand the artist aspect of wanting to try out new things... but I do hope that someday she'll offer another order of resin cast Dentelles. They are quite difficult to find on the 2nd market :/

20. the moonglass pre-order e-mail includes Angel Egg Natural 32cm, and Angel Egg Dentelle 33cm, as well as the 54 cm.
