Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. Yeahhh I guess so XD I actually never wanted a girl but now that I have a boy, I find myself wanting a girl just so I can put her in pretty dress X3 With ruffles and bows and... -rants on- XD

I LOVE boys clothes though I think they look so amazingly cool X3 it's not 'boring' for me at all!!! My boy is definitely tons of fun to dress X3 <3

    2. no not at all. i love male dolls as they could also be variety. and trousers are hard to make.

    3. The first doll I'm getting is a girl doll. And I guess a reason I'm getting a female is because I've grown up with female dolls (like Barbies). And for people like me, who worry about what their parents will think of they see a doll peen, a girl is much 'safer', since females don't have parts that stick out below the belt. I believe there are more patterns out there for females, and I feel that there are a lot of cute dresses and things that I believe only girls look good in, therefore, I'll get a girl.

    4. Personally, I find clothing the female dolls intensely dull. I loathe sewing for them to the extent that I just DON'T anymore and instead am teaching myself tailoring so I can make my boys suits instead. It's far more of a challenge to me to get a suit right than it is a dress on a female form and if I feel the need for feminine clothing, I have two male dolls I crossdress that present me with much more of a seamstressing issue to get my teeth into than darts for boobs and wide hips ever will. Essentially, no, I find my male dolls an eternal challenge that I enjoy far more than the females ones.

    5. I don't own a girl yet so I don't know but to me, it's actually the other way around, it's more challenging to dress my boy b/c I don't know much about boys fashion whereas I know how I would want to dress my girl (when I get her) =) I don't find my boy boring at all, I think it's nice to be able to research on boys fashion and see what works for my boy. That's all part of the fun!

    6. Well, since bjd's unless they're meant to look like manly, their faces are already so beautiful so I wouldn't mind crossdressing sometimes to feel like I had a female doll xD

    7. I had to buy one girl doll so I can dress her in rococo and other historical gowns.

But boys are definately not dull, there's a great variety of styles for them too. One of mine dresses in historical costumes, another one in kimonos, one in black leather, one in harem like clothing and so on.

    8. I have both girl and boys, but I think they are both challenging to sew and design for. I have two boys who dress casually but the rest are more flamboyant and kind of walk a line of masculine and feminine...which is probably my favorite style to design for. I like the challenge of designing something more flamboyant but keeping it masculine enough that you know that doll/character is a male.

I think actually physically sewing for a female doll is easier, because dresses are easier. Sewing pants is much more time consuming, and if you want to deviate from the normal pattern it gets even trickier.

    9. I find it challenging to find new ways to be creative with boys since dresses aren't involved but I find ways XD

    10. I grew up with Barbies etc... but for BJDs I definitely prefer boys! I don't find them challenging to dress. There are so many different looks for them, from tailored stuff to extravagant romantic period clothing. I seem to have less inspiration for my girls.

    11. Both boys and girls are challenging to me, depending on the look that I want. As time goes on, I've come to have pretty fixed ideas about certain styles of boys' clothing, so the dolls I own have become easier to dress.

I once read an article about how there's nothing wrong with going through a video game set on easy mode. Sure, people might laugh at you, but on easy you get to enjoy the ride and not be frustrated by being defeated and stuff. I take the same way with bjd. I don't feel the need to be challenged, so I don't care if my boys are a little boring/easy.

    12. I find it really challenging to find patterns/clothes for my boys. Eventually, I'll have to make them myself. There's just not that many fantasy-style patterns or clothes out there that will fit a UniReal body. And also, those that I've seen, so far, aren't really what I'm looking for. Pirate clothes are a little easier to find but once more - not all that many of them in Akando size and again, not what I'm looking for. It's even kinda challenging to find normal everyday kind of clothes for my Ark cos, well, Unidoll doesn't sell all THAT many clothes (most of them are - you guess it - not what I'm looking for anyways) and clothes from other companies more often than not have to be adjusted to fit him.

So - boring? Nope, definitely not. :D

    13. Actually I find it the opposite. It's so much easier to dress my female doll, but my male one is a pain. It starts from clothes and even goes to wigs. Especially since I have a slim mini boy. Most mini boy clothes have boy shorts, which look absolutely ridiculous on a slim mini boy. And that's assuming the company really makes clothes for mini boys. And, actually I wouldn't dress a chubby mini boy in that either, and to be honest I wouldn't dress my 3 year old male cousin in that either >-> I mean there's nothing wrong with clothes, but a good chunk of the companies make mini boys clothes to look so umm "cutesy" which is fine for girls, not for boys. I feel like if I want something that works for my boy doll, I /have/ to sew it. Wigs have a somewhat similar problem; I find I have to cut and fix it. *shrugs* on the other hand, I can just buy what I want for my female doll, and ta-da she's done.

    14. I find it more difficult to find clothes for my male doll since he has to wear more mature clothing ( like for 70 cm ) and most of them are casual which I don't really like so I only have a few. But I find it more easier with my female doll since it's surprisingly less expensive in terms of dresses and wigs compared to how much I have to pay for my male doll... but it doesn't effect how much I still like him ^^

    15. I have both male and female dolls, and I don't find one inherently more or less challenging than the other. With any type of style, the challenge to me lies more in doing it well than having to be flamboyant or glamorous. Almost all my guys dress pretty casual -- in fact, they look like ordinary people you could run into on the street (which is how their characters should look). They're definitely not slick and dolled up. However, what I strive for is to have their clothes look realistic. Like miniature people clothes instead of 'doll clothes.' That to me is what makes their style interesting -- being realistic and detailed (for the record most of their stuff was purchased as I don't sew much). Consequently, as I've been working on improving their wardrobe and weeding out the mediocre hand made stuff and things made for other dolls that don't fit right, I've become very picky about items like blue jeans. I wear them almost everyday, so I know what they should look like and expect my dolls' jeans to look the same. To me, highly realistic little items of clothing aren't boring as part of the thrill is seeing something so everyday translated into this different and much smaller format.

In a lot of ways, my girls aren't much different. They tend to collect more stuff, but it's average people wear for the most part. Jeans, tops, denim skirts, a sweater here or there. My goal for them is the same as for the guys. The one thing I will say is that I often have an easier time finding tops for my girls, as a lot of guy stuff I find either has a collar and is too preppy, or goes to far into the gothy punky sort of direction. I'm not saying the stuff I need for them doesn't exist, but it's been harder for me to locate than cute tops for the girls.

    16. Out of all of my dolls, Florian is the true peacock (There's also Kestrel's appreciation for fine leather and pleather, but that's another story...). He does historical in any era he lived in (being a very old vampire) and he's flamboyant. So no, I don't find sewing for him boring. Restraint is more the issue...

    17. hmm, i prefer boys over girls. Because, i had a hard time picking clothes/dress for girls, too much varity of designs. For guys, well, anything goes for me. However, i do crossdress my boy when i'm bored. It's just funny and cute! :3

    18. I was thinking something along the lines of this the other day, looking for possible clothes for my upcoming boy I noticed there was a lot more female clothing then boys, some companies didn't even have boy clothing at all. I'm being sorely tempted to dress him out of character too xD

    19. I actually find girls boring for the simple fact that there is so much for them. With boys you have to actually get creative, design things, and moddiy things. You can't just buy anything from doll websites.
And even with different personallities, boys are more fun.
There's always the set thing for the girl. Three styles of the same thing to choose from, them colours. For boys you have to really get creative. It's more fun. Which is why I only have one girl.

    20. I actually enjoy a lot more sewing clothes for my girls that for my boy, it's true that you have a lot more of things to do for girls, but if you like, like me, other times for clothes there are a lot of posibilities^^ I´m working now with my boy, I´m making him suits and vest and shirts , a lot of them, regency, victory, moderm....you can play a lot with them too, and when i finish this i will make him a akatsuki robe(my boyfriend love's naruto), and he alredy have a hogwarts robe... so you can find a lot of funny thing to dress your boys^^
