Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. I find boy dolls more bland and harder to dress, personally.
As much as I love my boy, I'm getting tired of dressing him in one way and not really having any sort of inspiration for outfits.

With girls on the other hand, I just need to look at a piece of fabric and I have a design already.

    2. i don't actually know which gender is more challenging to dress, but i do know i prefer dressing boys than girls (which is why current i only own boys). they can wear stuff that i can't (cos i'm a girl), and look good in it. girls on the other hand are more troublesome, cos i don't like girly stuff myself and i can't figure if i should dress them my style (isn't that so boring) or girly stuff (that i don't wear)...

    3. Boys are only boring and bland to people who don't know anything about male fashion. (Especially considering the fact that male fashion existed waaaaaayyy before female fashion did, and there's A LOT of history to it) It's actually a lot of fun to dress boys, because you can't just throw them in a pile of frills and call it a dressy outfit. To be honest, with a few exceptions all girly dresses look exactly identical to me, and that's just boring (though I have seen some absolutely amazing dresses, and I've certainly wanted to try making some, I won't deny).

Besides, to me, dressing up girl dolls is more boring because I already have one picky female to dress up - myself. If I wanted to dress up a girl all I need to do is open my wardrobe or hit the mall. (Don't get me wrong, dressing girls is a lot of fun too, though my preferences for girl outfits lie on the more masculine side as well)

Also, it's certainly a lot more of a challenge to dress up boy BJD's because there aren't as many interesting things for them out there, so every time it's a challenge and a very fun hunt through many stores to find what I like.

    4. I find that my girls are more of a challenge to find clothes in doll stores for -- at least the kind of clothes I would like for them to wear. Sure I can make them myself, but there's the challenge of pattern-drafting for them (fabrics are not a problem though since I've got quite a stash). After years of making clothes for female fashion dolls, I find that I don't really like it when the pieces I make end up not fitting well and I waste a lot of materials and time in the process. So there's that fear. Plus lack of time.

On the other hand, I find it quite a blessing that there's no problem finding frilly fancy suits for my boys in a lot of doll stores, since I don't really have a lot of experience making boy clothes.

    5. I like guy dolls more because I like looking at guys more, and really, if I wanted girl clothing variety, just crossdress. There's lots of interesting pieces of clothing for guy styles as well.

    6. Heh, I barely dress myself up in different clothes every day, much less have the effort to dress up a girl doll more than I would a boy.

    7. Personally, it is a BIG challenge to work things for my boy. He's wonderful and I love him very much, but the things I want to do for him I have to do myself or will have to commission someone.

The reason- Most of the clothes I have seen for yosd boys look like toddler clothes, or styles are very limited and practically the same. (I know the Yosd are supposed to be based off of preteens/ young children, but I don't have to follow that to a T)

Of course, there are things out there if you really look, but sometimes the clothes are out of my budget. T___T

So, boys are just as challenging as girls. Girls seem to be easier to shop around for and get things for, though.

    8. I much prefer dressing my boy dolls to my girl dolls.

Then again, I prefer male fashion in general.

    9. I only own boy dolls, but when I started in this hobby, I did in fact own several girl dolls. I found thier fashions to be boring and dated, and had a lot more fun dressing my boys. That said, I sold off the girl dolls and kept the boys. I have alwyas found it easier to find wigs and cool shoes and clothes for boys, just seems like there is more to choose from.

    10. Huh. I never really felt there was a difference in difficulty. But now that I think about it, I do seem to find dressing my boys a bit more of a challenge than dressing my girls. It's just easier for me to find or make stuff for the girls in the styles I like for them. I don't know why, but I'm a lot more picky about finding stuff that looks and fits "just right" on the guys. For this reason they have a significantly smaller closet than the girls, and so while it's easy for me to periodically change up what the girls are wearing, the boys tend to sit around in the same outfits forever. So yeah, I actually find boys to be a little more of a challenge than girls.

    11. I find it harder to dress boys because a lot of the stuff out there is so...er...flamboyant. And my boy is just a regular guy-not particularly fashion oriented. I'm trying to branch out with my big boy but I just don't have an eye for male fashion. My small boys are character dolls. XDD; It doesn't help that he's a pain in the arse to get into clothes.

    12. It really depends on what kind of boy, someone could have a transvestite boy doll so clothing is no challenge, as pretty as some girl dolls are I've really succumbed to boys XD I guess it also depends on the type of doll (like volks is probably easier to find clothes for rather than say a soom mega gem) but really depends on the dolls character/personality to how they dress (normal/fashionable etc) id say there's MORE clothes for boy dolls xD

    13. I'm stuck with boys XD My whole resin family consists of only boys LOL.
I don't think they are less of challenge :p
If his features are feminine looking,it simply challenge me to make him look manly and such.
I have this thought that owning a boy = owning a girl too XD I simply have to dress him up in another way and Tadah~here I have a girl^0^!...

    14. My SD boy is a vampire and likes to dress. He'll wear flamboyant stuff with panache. I'm planning on making him a series of outfits from the period in which he's been undead. Since he was alive in the reign of Charlemagne, that covers quite a bit of ground.

My MSD boy is much more quiet, but flamboyant in his own way. He's a low court fae and tends to wear sort of tribal stuff. Likes feathers and leather, that sort of thing.

It's my tiny boy who is the problem. He really only wants to wear jeans and shirts. Oh, and maybe a ninja costume every now and again.

I have many more girls than boys (working on that), but I don't find one or the other to be harder to costume for. It's the doll's personality that influences that for me.

    15. I think boys dolls are more challenging BECAUSE they can be dressed variously BUT you just have to find those "hidden" ways!
and no, I'm not taking about crossdressing them, but guys do have different styles as well in real life too!
Like: skater, rocker, punk, casual, businessman-like etc. what the hardest thing is that they don't wear skirts and pants are harder to make. but pants can be made varoius too and shirts too! :)

    16. I don't have a problem dressing my boys; it's not boring at all. They each have their own distinct styles that it makes shopping more fun, actually! On the other hand, I find girls to be boring to set up. I'm shopping ahead of time for my future girl and sometimes I help my sister shop for her CP Miyu..and since both girls are generally tomboyish, it's hard to find fitting clothes that don't have ruffles and laces! That would make it more challenging, sure, but it gets frustrating. At least with the boys I can tweak various outfits.

    17. With boy dolls I get the choice of motorcycle leathers or kilts or 70's disco apparel or anything I can think of.

Standard girl doll outfit is a dress... Don't get me wrong there are amazing dresses out there but I AM a girl and what do I wear? Pants, tank top, boots, leather jacket. In the doll world it's difficult to find any of that stuff fitted to a girl because there are so many frilly dresses! Heck I won't even wear lace or ribbon on my undies! <_<" I just don't dig the girly stuff.

    18. All my dolls are boys except for my mini... I spent a lot of time on her and still she's a challenge because she doesn't have clothes that "fit" her(shes VERY Busty lol) she's also a lesbian... Anyway o have several boys who
Are a challenge because they have that one outfit that suits them...and my girl is a challenge because she hates every outfit I put on her...really I feel I can't win

    19. THAT IS, WAS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE MY NUMBER ONE PET PEEVE WITH SIMS 2 D: It was especially horrific right after the game first came out. There was no mods, no fanmade content, no EPs, and literally 2 outfits that weren't hideously ugly.

      ANYWAY.

I think boyish boys are tough, simply because it's hard to find boyish wigs (unless you want fur). :I Clothes, I don't find so much of a challenge. Surprisingly, there's quite a lot of variety out there. I think the bjd division of the doll hobby is the only division that offers a lot of variety to the boys, for a change. It's refreshing, in a world where, like with Sims, males are normally almost completely ignored for this sort of thing.

Word. That stuff is not getting anywhere near my tender areas. D8 It itches!

    20. I totally agree with this statement; I'm waiting on a boy currently, and have searched harder and longer to find that 'perfect' outfit, only to discover I'll most likely have to commission the clothes I want for him XD
