Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. I have both male and female dolls in my crew, and especially love my guys. :aheartbea I find the guys are fun and very interesting to costume. Their characters range from wearing historical male costuming (18th and 19th century) to contemporary (casual or college professorial) to flowing silk robes and/or kimonos. They are delicious to paint and photograph too. :)

    2. You know, if your girls don't wear dresses, then it's no different. That said, there are plenty of clothes ideas for my boy, I'm not worried about a shortage. XD

    3. actually i think boys for me will be an interesting challenge for me.
I plan to get a boy MSD doll sometime soon and i find it a bit daunting to try and make clothes for him. I only currently own one other guy doll and i haven't really done much for him since he doesn't have his final body yet.

Thought i don't think i'd say boy dolls are boring to sew for, with a bit of imagination there is plenty to be done with them,

    4. I used to only collect girl dolls to dress them in pretty clothes and frilly dresses :aheartbea and now I have a boy doll, I am finding that he is great fun to dress- I love the selection of male clothing out there- from Steampunk to classic gentleman to surfer (he has many personas :sweat), I am finding it much more fun to dress my boy!

    5. I dont have a girl doll, but I feel that its much more fun to dress up a male doll. I mean, Im a girl, if I wanted to dress up my doll, why not dress myself up? I know there are alot of size limitations and such, but, well, dressing up males isn't boring at all, really..

    6. I just had a look at them and they look a bit on the "uber-trendy" side... and (in common with other places such as 9Style) they annoyingly show stuff on dolls in "interesting" poses tht don't actually show the details of what you're getting - they don't, for example, have any pctures that show how the trousers fit. I'd hate to order an outfit from them only to find that the trousers are some nasty low-slung style that don't actually reach up to my boy's waist so he'd look like a slob when wearing them....{shudder}

Getting regular trousers, or even jeans, for boy dolls is a real challenge if you don't buy into the current trend for not knowing where their actual waist is.

    7. I've found it's harder to buy clothes for male dolls, especially in the style I like, and I definitely do not enjoy making them as much as girl clothes. I kind of understand why so many in the hobby dress their male dolls in female clothes, finding male clothes is a nightmare.

    8. i find that male dolls are much more fun - at first when i started i was unsure about getting a boy but now i love the male dolls and find that they are great to be creative with.

    9. My male dolls may not look so flashy as far as their clothing goes, but they are probably *more* of a challenge to dress than the ladies are. ;)

My male dolls are fairly ordinary people- my El, Mikos, is a computer nerd with no massively outlandish tastes, and my bigger boy, Shaun, prefers a smart-casual look. Both of them are almost impossible to dress, as the vast majority of clothing avaliable is either ultra-fashionable and slightly outlandish looking, is for the wrong size (the two I am talking about are SD size), is for younger characters, or is designed for a more gothic or punk look. The 'normal' looking clothing I have found is either very low quality, or massively expensive- all to achieve a rather uninteresting look (even though it's one I really quite like.) :(

If anything, I would say girls or very outlandish looking boys are easier to dress overall. But alas, my male dolls are not massive fans of black and chains, so there isn't as much stuff out there for them as I would like.

    10. Character wise, IMHO, yes- it's less of a challenge for boy dolls but that depends on your character in mind for the boy doll and the chosen doll in question. I find making boy characters is less of a challenge but by no means it is boring.

    11. no, actually i think boy doll can be challenge too! the way of their makeup and clothes changes their appearance a lot!!! they can do like renaissance, modern, punk, and many other style too, maybe prince and knight。。。things like that. I think doll can be very different if you try really hard !! :)

    12. Personally, I don't really feel they are less of a challenge but it is more fun dressing up a girl. I am biased though, so my dolls are currently all boys. The only girl I might buy in the future is a tiny. That said though, my boys aren't really low maintenance in term of wardrobe. Their outfits sometimes costs as much as a girl, but at least I won't really get tempted to keep buying "ALL those cute frilly dresses" for them. LOL.

I do sew for my boys (I am not a professional but just starting out and learning) and frankly I sew mostly dresses so it is inevitable that my boys end up as "models". The only reason I don't sew proper outfits for my boys is purely coz I can't sew pants and shirts with necklines/collars lol! T_T

    13. I don't think there less challenging nor boring. They have there places with girls doll both are welcome to have.

    14. I get upset because I feel like its so much of a challenge to find dollfie boy clothes. It gets me mad!! I want more dollfie boy clothes, Id even design some because I have so many ideas! :doh

    15. I actually think there's not too much inequality in the way of clothing options for male and female dolls. I actually find dressing males more of a challenge, because I dress a woman every day (myself) so I already know what works and what doesn't.

    16. I think it's easier for me to find the clothes I like for boy dolls. I'm very picky about my girl clothes, full dresses and things like that. The outfits I want for my girls just aren't available. I like simpler clothes for my boy,and they're so easy to find. I probably won't have to make anything for him.
The faceup for a boy doll might be a challenge for me.

    17. I think boy dolls are just as interesting and challenging as girl dolls. I have mostly boys and some of them are very high maintenance!

    18. Same as Sapphire especially my MSD boy is hard to dress. I had to be very specific in what I was looking for. I've made all of his clothes thus far so it's a little easier but I'm a girl...I have mostly fabric in girly patterns and colors.

    19. I have all boys and in some ways its more challenging but not boring at all...I pay a lot in shipping random items from different places, but it's the only way to get what I want.

    20. Nicky is my first SD boy....he's terrible. With me buying him things, that is. My other two dolls I don't have a nagging urge to spoil them. One is a boy yosd, the other a girl yosd. They just seem easier to put things together for, even the girl.

But Nicky?? NOPE! Mr. Fabulous over here is another story.
His clothes are the challenging part...both finding/buying/making them and putting them on. :I I spent an hour putting him in his new kimono. Not because I didn't know how...but because I was trying to figure out how HE would like to wear it.

So...I re-folded and re-tied things until I felt that HE was happy. (Why is that??) His pants and tops have to sit a certain way, and match his little hoity-toity personality...which is difficult because I'm the polar opposite, and far from a pro tailor/seamstress. So the nice things are pricey. >_<' (...like that second kimono...)

I was also very particular with my boys' wig style and his face-up. The other dolls? Nope. :I

I hope my second SD isn't such a challenge. Nicky's little fancy-pants personality sorta just creeped up on me. He's definitely challenging for me. :I
