Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. My boys are so much harder than my girls.
      SO much harder.

Somehow, since my first doll, I seem to have ended up with the oddest sizes in my boys. They're all either too short, too skinny, too fat, too tall or too something for the clothes out there. And then there's style. There are no clothes for guys who look like they've lived in their clothes for a few days or more. I don't want preppy-casual-chic, military clothing for some of my guys, not all of them do gothic-punk or cyber-wear (not that I can find those either). They don't all dress in Victorian-style fluff (again, can't get much of it that I like but I do have some. Too bad it only fits one doll who doesn't wear it!!!!). I want sloppy-I've-been-wearing-these-jeans/shirts/sneakers-since-1978-and-don't-plan-to-buy-more-until-these-fall-apart clothes. And I want them to actually fit. Not be huge in the waist and tight in the calves...or huge all over, or stuck halfway up the thighs. Shoulders seem to be a problem too....a few years ago I had one doll with broad shoulders. Now they all have them! Good thing 1 (or 5) are still skinny enough to wear what doesn't go over the arms/shoulders/chest of the others. :||||

Then the one guy I have that I actually want a polo shirt and khaki's for? Can't find a thing in his size.

I have boys who just wear whatever I have left over because clothes in the style I want for them just don't exist. I've commissioned some things, but it's expensive, I'm impatient and not everyone makes things I want (and when I send off the measurements of certain dolls no one believes they're actually SD sized. Too skinny. The hell.).

I have 5 SD girls all with totally different bodies and styles and I have never had an issue getting clothes for them. SD guys suck.

And yet I have so many D:

    2. Fun fact: Right now, Erik's wearing his girlfriend's boots because as a Slim Mini, most shoes made for his size are all female-orientated. And regular MSD shoes kind of give off that Kingdom Hearts look that I'm not looking for in him <<; As for clothes, they've been hit and miss, although I'm fortunate enough to have more hits. But in all honesty, when you do find the right pieces that actually fit, it's amazing what combinations you can come up with. Erik's style is pretty much like an average teenage boy... or at least, the boys that I'm used to seeing around here. He can be angsty and broody one day, and look like a prep the next, as long as the attire's casual. On occasion, he'll dab into more fantasy elements (like oversized top hats), but that's for mere amusement.

So no, I don't think boys are less of a challenge or more boring :P However, I've been tempted in getting a girl, simply because I can't resist frills...

    3. I think they are less of a challenge once they are put together-- short wigs, trousers, front-buttoning shirts, etc. are easier to manage than the long long skirts, petticoats, stockings, corsets, etc. that my girls wear.

But I think finding appropriate clothes, wigs, and, eyes is just as hard, if not harder, for boys.

    4. I dont think male dolls boring or less of a challenge in the slightest. In fact, because there is such a limited amount of clothing, it makes finding that "perfect outfit" even more challenging *_* but that's what makes it fun in my opinion.

Moreover, most of my characters are male (though I currently own more girls than boys). Males are just more exciting to design and customize, to me :).

    5. I think the biggest hang up for me is the wigs. I prefer guys with short hair and even the short haired wigs available out there are too long. Maybe a Johnny or James wig by Monique would work. When I think of all the time periods I can choose from, past and present ethnic styles, modern styles and then the entire fantasy genre, I don't see boys as being more limited than girls. I personally just find it harder to tailor for guys. I haven't even started saving up for my first guy yet (SD Vito Lester), but other than the wig, shoes might be a problem because he's an irregular size.

    6. At the moment I'm having the opposite issue - male clothes in the style I want are easy to come by/commission - but since all 3 of my girls are fairly unusual sizes I'm having difficulty finding anything that fits/let alone is in their style.

    7. I certainly don't see them as less challenging. If anything they're more. Try hunting for a good wig that's not girly or long or a faceup that's masculine (tho I admit that has gotten way better). Clothing options are fewer so the hunt is harder and if you make clothes, many male things are more tedious and time consuming.

    8. Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Well, I couldn't comment on them being less of a challenge, b/c I've only got boys... But boring? No way! A lot of people say that boys' clothes aren't as fancy as girls' clothes, and I suppose on the surface that's true. But if you do some digging around, you can find some insanely elaborate clothes for resin guys. I'm partial to Victorian and 18th century looks for my guys, so they look all kinds of sparkly and silky and shiny - we're talking stockings and breeches, shirts and waistcoats, coats and enormous floofy feathered hats. Need I go on? ^o^

So yeah - foppish, yes. Boring? NO!

    9. Less of a challenge?

Heck no! My first doll was a boy, I've had him for just over a year and a half, and clothes are hard to find for him. He pretty much lives in his suit right now. But, my girl, on the other hand, is perfect in a simple tank top, jeans, and no wig.

    10. My Elfdoll Vampire Red has 7 cm. feet. Try finding male shoes for feet that small. Angell Studio has some, I think, but not too many others. And when you do find them, they have Elton John platforms and chains and buckles all over them. Fortunately, I found a group order that was doing orders for plain black boots for girl SDs that fit him.

Also, I think in some respects that it's harder to nail down a style for a boy doll. At least it is for me.

    11. Oh, man, THIS. Story of my life, I swear. I can't find half of what I want for my guys, and of the half that I do find, some it only sort-of works. (Which would be why I've made a bunch of my guys' stuff, including a gas mask and respirator. Those literally do not exist for sale anywhere for 60cm dolls.) I have trouble buying anything for most of my guys because they're all so skinny that everything meant for SD boys falls off them.

Boys are not even remotely easier to dress than girls if you have specific clothing and accessory needs. There's definitely more of a challenge there, at least for me.

    12. ...how? It's the same as for girls as it is for boys. A person would only be limited by their mindset and by their imagination/creativity.

    13. Hell. No. I actually believe boy dolls are harder than girls. Finding the right wig and (in my case) trying to make that doll look like an actual boy is difficult. Not to mention I have the issue of having one of the very few straight male dolls (I know there are far more but finding others in my community that have them is.....challenging). Finding clothes for SD and MSD boys isn't terribly difficult but I have SO much trouble finding stuff for my poor Yo boys. It seems like normal boy clothes are few are far between. Girls have a bit more freedom in those areas I feel.

    14. I find that there is one big challenge about the guys that the girl dolls don't suffer from, namely finding wigs for them . Especially short hairstyles :...(. Even the fur wigs have rather long hair compared to the hairstyles I prefer so that to me is a huge challenge.

I also find that the limited amount of clothes that are available is challenging. Because if I had a girl I would have much more to choose from, but with the guys it gets very limited (at least for the guys I own). So for my dolls who have fairly unique but still not cross-dressing styles another big challenge is to make the clothes for them from scratch.

However I do love the idea that a lot of things aren't available to buy because that means I get to make those items and try new things ;). So for me personally I feel that boy dolls are probably an equal challenge, but that the kind of challenge is perhaps different.

    15. I think boys are MUCH harder....and I have 25 of them. -headdesk- My boys styles vary a lot, but do you have ANY idea how hard it is to find a football jersey? Or cowboy hat (that isn't girly or looking like a pimp hat?)? Or snarky (non-doll, non-anime) tshirts? Or athletic wear? Or a tae kwon do uniform? Or casual preppy loose jeans? Snapback hats? Shoes that aren't dressy, goth, Cons or Vans? The list goes on! It seems to me, finding just regular, everyday guy clothes for teens and adults is REALLY hard! My boys (mostly) won't wear fantasy styles, victorian, childish/cutesy, suits or the neon colored or high fashion clothes. Go to a college campus, check out the normal guys. THAT'S mostly what my guys live in. It's unbelievable how hard it is to find a lot of that stuff!

Then there's also the issues of sizing. Like my 63-64cm boys....SD13 pants are too short, SD 17 are too big. Shirts are usually sloppy or too short. Or my DC boys....they're too slim for most clothing to look right. My AoD boys are often too chunky for the tighter fitting clothes. My 56-58cm boys tend to swim in SD clothing. My 30cm boy is too big for Yo-SD clothes, but way too small for MSD. All of his stuff has to be commissioned.

roguegirl9929- 5 of my boys are 100% straight, and 4 that are bi are paired with girls, so your boys are not alone! Though as far as clothing, I think it would be hard for most ppl to tell which of my boys are gay or straight based on style. My gay boys mostly tend to be pretty masculine. My "gayest" boy would likely murder anybody that tried to put him in women's clothes. lol

    16. CloakedSchemer: It's hard! I fully agree! Someone out there just needs to make typical, every day, boy clothes. If I could sew I would.

It's hard having a straight boy without style coming into play. Everyone I tend to meet just assumes my boys are gay because that's the norm. It's frustrating.

    17. Mine is a mix of bi, straight, and gay and they are kinda hard to dress. My guys are mostly casual, with some punk. One only wears three colors, purple, black, and white. I can kinda sew but not stuff I want. Hopefully soon I can afford to purchase some stuff.

    18. I only bond with boy dollies for some reason... I've owned three girls and gave one away as a gift and while I wish I could sell my other two girls cus I haven't bonded with them and they just sit in their boxes while I play with my boys I can't bring myself to sell them since they were gifts from my finace for our first anniversary and my 22nd birthday... so honestly id say boys are easier, more fun, and way cooler than girl dollies since I've never seen a girl doll I liked enough to own... I think they are pretty but I have no desperate attraction nor desire for them like I do my boys!

    19. Oh, from my ebay sell experience, Boy dolls are more popular. I think there are more boy doll owners.
For example, in my Mystic Kids brand, the boys : Lawrence 1/3 ; Ellis 1/3 and Gene are very popular.
There are more owners of them than the girls.

For dress, boys are more popular for Casual and punk styles ^^ These two style outfits are more seen in owner's gallery.

But many fantasy styles dress and army dress are looking very cool for boys. :)

    20. I tend not to limit my dolls based on gender and the clothes that typically apply to that specific gender.
Therefore, absolutely NOT boring. :D You're only limited by your own imagination!
