Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. Actually, with my male doll it was very challenging to get an outfit for him that I liked. He is based on an OC of mine and while that OC is not at all boring being that he's a werewolf and detective and has all these hilarious personality quirks, his clothes are pretty normal. I didn't want to just put him in jeans and a t-shirt and shoes and call it a day. I wanted him to stand out. So I found some jeans eventually that flattered him. Found a couple shirts I really like. And then I accessorized the hell out of him. Accessorizing takes a "boring" outfit and really makes it pop. And that took months to find accessories I liked that worked. I got him sunglasses to wear on his head, found a seller on ebay that made leather wristbands with burned letters and kanji on them, found a cool belt, added a leather vest, and then I made him a very cool necklace from the necklace I got with my bottle of Juicy Couture Couture fragrance. Now he's pretty smokin' in some casual clothes. He really stands out and I'm pretty satisfied with it but the whole process certainly was not easy. A lot of times I even asked myself, why didn't I just get a girl? It felt like it would have been easier to find frilly awesome clothes. So yeah, boys are definitely not easier. 2. I will always prefer boys over girls because you don't get to experience the fun of cross-dressing when you own a girl.

    3. While I love my boys, they can't really pull off the frilly dresses my girls can. :( Considering my boy to girl ratio is relatively low, they don't get nearly as much, but I have still found enough outfits I like for them. :)

    4. I find it more challenging to find clothes... There are so many pretty dresses and skirts typically for girls, but where are all the equally pretty clothes for boys? :/ I do feel that girls' clothes greatly outnumber boys' clothes.

Sewing for a boy doll is a lot easier. Their chest and waist measurements aren't much to worry about if you want to make something more snug-fitting.

    5. I still think boys are harder to dress especially since I'm saving up for a BBB Isabella and I already know what girly stuff I already got for my little witch to be.

    6. I don't have any boys yet, I have one planned though so I've been looking for clothes for him and I think it's harder to find nice boy clothes than girl clothes

    7. I think boys are more difficult to dress than girls. I have a couple outfits picked out online for a MSD girl if I ever get one, but I struggle so much with my SD boys. I don't have trouble finding pants I like for them since tight/skinny jeans are easy to find and pretty common for the boys. I love tight jeans on guys so I guess I lucked out on that. It's really the shirts and shoes that are the hardest. For shirts, I really just want some colorful t-shirts or other casual styles in bright colors. SD boy shirts are soooooo monotonously colored, I've taken to making most of their shirts myself. For shoes, I just want some high tops, Converse, or Vans for my SD17 boys. While I have found a couple pairs, most of the ones I'm interested in seem to be out of stock :( But boys are definitely not boring in my opinion ^_^

    8. As I only have a Yu Resinsoul (which is not even a male model), I can't really say. Bur I had two glamourous breast Iplehouse and it was such a pain to make teeshirt for them that I will never take that option again :( I'll take normal or small. Anyway, I can't wait to have my JID Boris to try and make him clothes :D

Anyway, I don't think boy are boring, it's just a different way of "playing" with dolls

    9. I prefer boy dolls, mostly because I've never seen a girl sculpt that I've really loved. I think that there are plenty of exciting outfits you can do with boys though. While most of of my boys do own at least one pair of jeans and a t-shirt, I have elaborate punk outfits, cosplays, elegant gothic lolita, fantasy, etc. So while I guess it could be boring if you focus on 'realism' (in terms of making all your male dolls mainstream average joes) these are things that you can literally go crazy with and make them whatever you want. So it's only as boring as you make it.

    10. I have 3 boys (one SD) and a girl (SD). (Don't get me wrong, I love her, but I'd be lying if I said she isn't an excuse to buy my boy some more feminine clothes  She'll get to share them too.)

AnnieHan pretty much summed it up for me. I really have a thing for feminine looking boys and it's just more fun putting them in frilly clothes/dresses. It's kind of predictable for girls to wear dresses imo.

That being said, I do think dressing boys in clothes outside of the standard fare is harder because a lot of companies size their clothes for boys, then they size their clothes for girls so finding girl clothes that fit boys is a bit tricky. (My boy looks pretty good in that Dollheart dress though. Almost better than my girl but don't let her hear that.:XD:)

    11. I find boys faceups to be harder. A girl going for even a natural look is easier to paint and has more options than a halfway masculine male doll. You put one layer too many of pastel on their cheeks or lips, and suddenly your boy is questioning his sexuality :/

    12. Question...Anyone despite the challenge with boys....Still seems to buy more and more of them? *already saving up for boy number five*

    13. I only have boys and I do not find their clothing options boring at all. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to bjd outfits. Some of my boys like casual, some are a bit goth, some like glam and others wear full fantasy outfits. I also like a mix of masculine very realistic looking guys to pretty delicate featured androgynous types. Nope boys are never boring :)

    14. Yes....boy #26 will be home next month. >.> I have one girl.

    15. including SD, MSD and Puki sized dolls I have 9 girls. One is unstrung right now so I'm not sure she counts...all the rest of mine are boys - even the genderless ones I think of as boys. *shrug* Maybe I like being challenged? Or frustrated? XD Or I figure eventually one of them will be easy to shop for....(hasn't happened yet)
One of my girls, the newest of course, has become difficult. But it's mostly her height - she's 70cm and I have no idea where to get her clothes. I seem to have this problem with the guys of this size as well, so it's really not a male/female thing so much as it is size....

    16. I'm afraid I don't understand this comment... Girls can crossdress too? I didn't realize crossdressing was restricted to boys?

I find boys a challenge because I have such a hard time finding a sculpt that looks masculine enough for what I want. :( Iplehouse is definitely a plus though!

    17. I always found boys more challenging. I used to have only boys and I was never happy with them because I couldn't find manly clothes or wigs.

I want to dress my guy like an American Eagle model :(

    18. hmmm i can´t share that point of view, the most of my dolls are male, cos i like boys, i like all i can do with them, i think that there´s not a difference between boy and girl dolls, you can custom both as much as you want, you can make face ups, differents clothes, different wigs and anything.

Is really funny and amazing to play with them :)

    19. That's pretty much exactly how Erik should dress. And is why I end up having to make a lot of his clothes.

    20. Well, nobody says that boy dolls all have to belong to the jeans-and-t-shirt age! I have more clothing ideas for my medieval boys than for my medieval girls. Gawain's third cloak is in the making and his second complete outfit is planned. Gwalchmei is the only one of my dolls who has two complete, hand-made outfits. The girls who have been with me longest have one outfit each so far. They just don't wear chainmail, swishy cloaks or funny leg wear. In fact, it's a bit of a challenge to style them all differently in their long dresses. I have given each of them a colour code to help :P.

Apart from that, variety and style are really all up to you, whether you own girl or boy dolls. My crew are medieval characters, but if I see a modern dress or a style from any other epoch that might suit their personalities, I won't hesitate! As such, Gawain (who, when I think of it, really is a clothes horse XD) has a renaissance-style outfit and a modern suit. Needless to say, I just love exploring each character's looks through the ages ;). Limits? I don't think so.
