Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. I dress my boys up in more than just simplistic clothes. My tiny has a little school outfits znd some PJs and my MSD has a really cool ensemble with a sweater, shirt, pants, tank top, necklace, and boots. I don't like a lot of the girls clothes really...

    2. I can sort of see where this has come from as I've found that a lot of the available boys clothes are very same-y. That said, my grail doll is a character from India in a post apocalyptic steampunk world and he has beautiful, intricate clothes and accessories that I've made for him. He easily has the most complex and stunning outfits from all my dolls. That said, I've had to make everything myself and it's taken forever so I can understand if you're not a sewer how male clothing could be seen as dull.

    3. Honestly, dolls are like us human beings. Girl dolls have more variety in clothing style. And yea I prefer a girl over boy. XD

    4. I think boys are harder simply because there is less variety in items available for them. Girls definitely have more options.

It seems there would be more options for guys considering there's a ton of people buying male dolls.

    5. In most cases I'd say yes, but I do have one boy doll that likes to look really, really good and that insists upon me making him clothes that are rather difficult. He makes up for the rest. Most of my boys I don't have to work that hard but with him I have to DESIGN. That's okay because I love having one boy who dresses for success but yeah, he is definitely more work, more like the girls than the other boys in that respect.

    6. I do have a hard time looking for boy clothes because it seems like most sellers only have the normal modern clothes. My boy is definitely a rather decadent character and he wouldn't look right in something modern. But I feel like you can still do a lot with them otherwise, especially if you can make your own clothing.

    7. I think that dressing boy dolls can be MORE of a challenge just because there aren't as many clothing or wig options out there! Their face-ups are just as difficult. I definitely don't think my boys are boring!

    8. Pretty much this... male dolls are really hard to dress in my opinion... I'm very happy I've been able to find things I want for my boys so far...

    9. Ha-ha, my boyfriend really envies how creative and wild female clothing can be. He says, with great sarcasm, "Wow. I can wear a shirt and pants. How exciting." And I guess I understand. While I would support him if he ever decided to wear a skirt--kilts, anyone?!--I can sympathize with his plight. I suppose boy dolls are sort-of the same, which is why I seek out the unique, the weird, and the crazy for my boy. Heck, I even let him wear feminine shirts or jeans originally designed for my girl. Why not? It makes him a little less "boring." :)

    10. I really think boys clothing can be as gorgeous and creative as girls' clothes. The fabrics just as luxurious, the styles as classically beautiful or flamboyant...

I've never looked at what's available to buy ready made, because I'm going to make all my boy's clothing myself, so I suppose that does give me more options. But if there really is less variety of boys' outfits to buy, then it surely makes it more of a challenge rather than less, to make them look fabulous in the unique items you've hunted down! :)

    11. I think it depends on the character or general style of your boy-doll.
Male clothes is not always simple and laconic, it can also be complicated and detailed ^__^

    12. I find it quite easy to dress my boys!! and I have more fun with boys fashion than with girls. Mind you, I have one little girl who owns my heart and I used to have a MSD girl so I know the difference. I just love male fashion and if I can't get what I want I will just commission someone, it's not the availability, it is your creativity.

Just look for Sadol...they amaze me with their male clothing! :D

    13. I think boy dolls are more challenging as girls have such a wide array of colorful fashion to choose from (and for me, I'm a girl and dressing another girl is easier from my perspective), whereas with boys you have to think more outside of the box for a wardrobe. And I've never owned a boy doll btw so I'm not sure if this is true, but I have a ton of respect for anyone with a horde of boys who're all so lovely and well-dressed as I don't think I'd be as good with boy dolls, it seems a bit daunting to me to say the least.

    14. Because I find boy fashions to be a little more limited, I actually think dressing boys are more challenging than dressing girls. I have one boy who will cross-dress and wear pretty much anything feminine, and he's so easy to shop for and has the most outfits out of my entire crew. But everyone else? Not so much.

So I guess this isn't so much a question of boys v. girls, but rather boy clothes v. girl clothes. I also have another boy who is supposed to dress fairly 'grunge' and 'odd', and typically masculine. However, he has such a petite body that only girl clothes will fit him, and I have the most difficult time finding him things that suit him while also his size. I can imagine that if one had a female doll they wished to dress in 'masculine' clothes, they might also find it challenging, whereas if they wanted their girl to dress more stereotypically feminine it might be a lot easier. Same goes for boys.

    15. I usually commission someone to make the outfits for my dolls, so for me boys aren't limiting, since I'm able to come up with whatever I want.

To be honest, I think girls are more challenging, not because of their wardrobe, but because I am usually looking for strong faces and there aren't many of them out there for female sculpts. Also, there are plenty of frilly dresses and cute styled clothes, but like InkyBear said: try to put on masculine looking clothes on a petite girl doll. Now there's a challenge.

    16. I have been trying to hunt for good, more-than-jeans-and-tshirts patterns for my incoming boy and having some trouble. I can find hundreds of dress patterns for girl BJDs. Am thinking I will just wait to get my doll and then draft his patterns myself, but it would be nice if I could find cool clothes patterns for him so I had something to do while I wait. Am going to "cheat" and buy doll clothes to take apart to draft sizes for patterns.

    17. I don't think boys are more boring than girls dolls, it's just different.

Indeed, with both dolls, you can play with clothes and even make up them. The only difference is limited by your imagination cause it depends on what you wanna express.

    18. I have four dolls, among which one boy. He is wonderfull (Charles, from Doll Granado), but he is more challenging... to dress ! Most (all?) of the trousers that I can find on web sites dont give the size of the waist... So I know that I have most chances of buying one that will not fit him. It would be SO easy to have sizes, just like humans, so I would buy clothes quietly... Hum, I think I'll have to wait a long time, before it happens ... :(

    19. I don't have a boy doll yet but will be buying one in the future. I plan on making him his everyday outfit and then start branching out, party duds, regency, victorian, who knows what else. Boys have never had the same range as girls, you only need to go into a clothing store to see that but lets face it guys manage to set themselves apart pretty well so I believe boy dolls can do the same.

    20. Girls seems to have more option available for them, but I don't feel myself limited when came to dress a boy. (My Dikadoll Mian Mian is a boy...well, a little boy really). Maybe because many of my male dolls are fantasy character and so I can dress them with the strangest fantasy outfits? Male dolls can wear kimonos, elegant attires, military outfit, casual clothing, sportwear, school uniforms, et cetera... there are less choice than girl dolls but not SO less... at least when we are talking only of clothes and not shoes XD
