Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. It's rather easy to style a girl in a cute or pretty way, because so many different kinds of wigs and clothes are available. Girls can wear dresses, but also pants and they still look gorgeous. It's a lot more challenging to style a boy, simply because we are bound to a rather small variety of styles. This makes collecting boys very interesting, but finding nice wigs and outfits can be pretty tricky and expensive.

    2. To me it's an advantage because I can save up some money by not to spend too much on their clothes.
As right now I have 4 boy dolls and plan to have at least 3 more to complete my dream collection :)

    3. I don't feel like sewing for boy dolls are less of a challenge aside from the fact I loathe sewing princess seams and other breast accommodations. Well, one of my boy characters is very flamboyant, so his clothes can get a bit over the top.

Also I think a well-tailored suit is the most deceptively difficult thing in the universe. They look simple, but IT'S SO HARD. No one makes a butler outfit that is not Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler cosplay so I need to sew Thomas his own under-butler outfit and it's the most difficult thing. Because the Downton Abbey fandom and BJD fandom seems to have nearly no overlap. T_T

Boy dolls with traditional masculine hair is a giant challenge. I've been delving into making my own wigs because it's darned near impossible to find the types of hairstyles my 1920s-style boys need.

    4. From my experience with the one boy doll I own, I would way that there is a special challenge to boys. Girls can be cute and there's all these choices, yes. But boys can look a little dead sometimes because I think that a few of the people I've seen, have liked just the idea of twinning or coupling with their girls. But there is a special way to draw out the personality of a boy doll. Their proportions are odd for me be used I've only ever drawn or been drawn to feminine bodies and faces. But a well done boy is something very incredible. just the same with girls.

    5. I can't speak that boys are more difficult to dress than girls (or on the contrary). I don't have any girls so I can't compare. But I don't think boys are less of a challenge or boring. I think it really depends on the the characters I want them to be.

    6. I actually find boy dolls to be more of a challenge! I find it much harder to find male sculpts I like (and, in fact, the last 'male' sculpt I bought I'm using for a female character!), and I find it harder to create male characters for some reason. I have 20 female characters (with 3 more incoming), and only 7 male characters! I've decided already that I want to try to focus on creating more male characters, because I don't like having such a clear divide (I'd prefer a 1-to-1 ratio).

    7. I feel the exact opposite!! I really struggled with my guy dolls after awhile because I never felt like I could really make to the characters I wanted due to the limited selection of clothes and especially hair. Not to mention sculpts are hard to find too. I find most boy sculpt to be way too girly and the only other options are the totally opposite end of the spectrum with a iplehouse's EIDs and SIDS. I just want a regular boyish looking face. I used to have an all male collection and now I have just one guy who I'm desperately trying to style haha

    8. Personally, though I agree that girls have more clothing options, I don't think finding clothes for boys is more or less challenging. And it's definitely not boring. It's really fun giving my boys a personal style that they want to stick to. And once you find that style, it's pretty easy to find or make the clothing for it. Plus I find it satisfying to have a really dapper/well dressed boy, more than having a frilly, cute girl (as sweet and darling as that would be).
Sometimes I kind of wish I had a girl so I'd have an excuse to buy all of the pretty shoes and dresses, but buying something with a little bit of a frill for Ardese usually tides me over. :)

    9. I think it depends on the type of boy--because boys can have a pretty fantastic range of style (just as girls). And when you have a picky boy, it's almost worse than a picky girl because there isn't as much of a selection for boys.

    10. I don't think boys are boring, I have two a Ringdoll Andrew Fullset which is a 1/3, and a Dikadoll AAAAA on a boys body in pink normal. On a 1/3 scale males are easy to find clothes for. As far as 1/4 scale it's biased towards girls. It takes searching for boys clothes. Dollmore has lots of boys clothes though. If you look you can find plenty of clothes.

    11. I would think boys would be more challenging! Though it's easy to find a lot of styles to suit girl dolls, I'm not sure it'd be the same for boys, most of the time when I'm browsing for clothes on Etsy or eBay, I rarely see any boys clothes that I really love!! That's just me though~ :D

    12. Speaking from my own experience, I find male BJDs more of a challenge overall. Fewer male sculpts appeal to me, as well as male clothing, so I have a hard time pinning down exactly what I want. However, it also feels more rewarding when I find something I really like.

    13. For boys, there are endless possibilities. The only limits are the "characters" you give them. I have pirates and rock stars, villains and kings; Starship captains and samurai, police officers and ancient god, just to name a few. They all dress accordingly. And it's been quite the journey getting them there.

    14. Boys feel more challenging because their wardrobe is so limiting. It can be a lot harder to achieve the look you want with a boy because there are way more girl clothes made than boys, I think.

    15. I find boys more challenging with finding the perfect sculpt....needless to say, there is a larger "younger, feminine" male sculpts out there than the more masculine, older sculpts.

    16. It's clothing where I find my biggest challenge with boys. I have no shortage of boy sculpts I just love, but the worst time finding good casual clothes that fit their styles. So much is frilly, lacy EGL stuff, or punk stuff with lots of mesh and spikes, and so little just the simple, early-20th-century-ish, casual wear I want for my boys. And that's before I even address shoes for them!

I find tons of clothes my girls would love to wear, but finding something for the boys is a lot more difficult. Definitely wouldn't call them less of a challenge.

    17. My boy has been a bit of a drama queen now that I've had him longer. It's pretty simple to sew for him most of the time, but finding the perfect wig was the REAL problem. Everything was either too girly, too big, and finally...FINALLY found the right one...I should've just gone for brown synthetic hair the first time!

So in reality...Boys are more of a challenge for me at least. Plus there's just only so much I can get away with, involving my guy when it comes to clothes and shirts. My girls less of a hassle because I can easily sew them dresses, frills, pink tops and girly capri's.... But Avalon is a bit of a challenge. Gotta make him something I like, but also something that compliments his sculpt.

...And I want another boy eventually.

    18. I never had a problem dressing up my boys, most of their clothes are mix and match or commissioned. But I recently ordered a MSD girl and I'm having a hard time finding clothes for her. Clothes for MSD girls are not my type (frilly dresses, too girly etc) I just can't find things that I like!! @_@

    19. Clothes I can't find I sew for my dolls and I usually prefer sewing for boys. ^^;
My dolls don't have that many clothes each, because I normally just stick with one style and add maybe one or two more to change them into occasionally. So there is no "boys have one outfit, girls have a full wardrobe"-cliche with me. ^^

    20. Most of my dolls are boys and I find it's really difficult to find suitable size clothes for them, unless they are standard SD size. Unfortunately, many of them aren't standard at all and it makes me spend so much time to find them something to wear or sew some clothes by myself. *_*
