Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. I do agree that boys are somewhat a problem to get to compromise with these wild clothing ideas of mine... O.o Don't look at me like that Ryu.

^^" Generally I'm used to sewing girls' clothing so it's easier for me to just pick up. Which is why I plan on getting a girl SD-sized doll ^^

Before Ryu, I had never sewn a collared shirt XD I had to learn though or else he would have run around in his leopard spotted undies and robe ~.~ not that I think he'd actually hate that idea...

    2. LOL. I stand corrected. Many times over. XD

I completely agree with the insight that many of you have expressed that any limiting factor pertaining to a boy doll's wardrobe would be due more to his personality than his gender. I still think girl dolls are easier to dress on account of the sheer range and variety of clothes available to them but, yeah, because of that, boy dolls are really more, and not less, of a challenge to dress. X]

Thank you, everyone, for your candid opinions and comments! =)

      * Edited for typo. ACK. XD

    3. I sew for both genders, and I feel as though neither gender is limited only the creators imagination. It is true that women are harder to fit, but mens clothing can be harder in construction when it comes to tailoring. Generally I enjoy sewing for both, but lately its been all about the boys.

    4. I think boys are more of a challenge. ^^
If you add all the different cultures, and the history of costume to the mix, their clothing is as limitless as a girls. ^^

    5. I have only three girls =and one girl head= of 9 dolls. And well, a tiny girl, but I think boys are as adorable as girls, just because I can put girlish clothes on them too XD

    6. well, i think dressing girls is easier, i don't think a boys wardrobe is limiting. i'm really influenced by 60's mod styles. which seem to include boys just as much as girls.

    7. Just watching on ebay and the websites of many of the dollmakers it seems they are finally getting more interesting clothing for the boys. Also those leather Angel outfits that are being sold on the Marketplace are to die for!

    8. I think it's the lack of available boy patterns that make it more difficult to outfit a boy, unless you purchase ready made clothing. I find that since I have a Hound I have to draft my own patterns and therein lies the challenge.

As far as boys clothing being less creative, I don't think that's necessarily true. If you consider different cultures and time periods the styles to choose from are vast.

If you're willing to dress your boy outside the 'norm' there's endless possibilities. Even if you stick to jeans and tee shirts the color and type of fabric will contribute to a wide variety of looks.

I think we're only limited by our imaginations.

    9. I've never found boys' clothing to be limiting. It seems more limiting in real life, but when it comes to BJDs for some reason I have just as much fun dressing up my boys as I would a girl. ^^ There are so many possibilities once you really look at what's out there (and what could be *picks up sewing machine*).

I've never gone with OOC-ness for humor's sake. Clothes are too expensive and I don't think they'd appreciate it very much. xD

    10. The good: Ichii is very easy to take care of. One pair of jeans and two pairs of shoes are more than enough for him!

The bad: I want little frilly Lolita dresses, 'cause I'll be damned if I can wear 'em!

    11. I'd say they are more of a creative challenge. You have to make more of your own desgins if you dont want to repeat the usual jeans and tee.

I'm glad my character doesnt have too much of a set look, but he doesnt like clothes that are too fussy... He doesnt care for baroque style. Right now he's wearing a gregorian monk robe, before that he was wearing black stain Hammer pants and a vynil tube top.

    12. Boys are just as hard/challenging to dress as girls are. Have you ever tried to sew a really good fitting pair of pants? And I still have yet to make Kai a good kimono/hakama set, schoolboy uniform, etc...

One of the things that appealled to me about bjd is the abundance of male dolls. Tired of making frilly dresses for antique bisque girls!

    13. Actually, I was just browsing Luts and realized they have -

88 Delf boys' outfits vs. only 33 Delf girl's outfits. 0.o And looking at the Kid Delf section, again, almost all the outfits are for boys. I never noticed it before, but it seems the bias is actually the other way around. Heh.

    14. Just my wo cets here- I'd say it depends on the boy.

Mikos is pretty limited in what he likes- certainly nothing too extreme... but Shuan will be a pain to buy for- either leathers and belts (but only of a certain style) or period clothes I will most likely have to make myself.

And it's the same for girls, I'm sure- it just depends on who they are. Some girls must be very limiting- others, easier.

    15. I do think that I like boys more... even though I seem to be at a tie for the amount of boys and girls that I want to get.
All of my boys have relatively basic styles, so it won't be hard to make things for them.
Also, I like the fact that boys can look a lot like girls if you put them in the right clothes, while most of the girls models out there... except for the minis, still look like girls, even if they are wearing guys clothes.
My only reason for getting girls is because I like the sexy, fun outfits that you can get for them.... because I would never be caught dead wearing anything like that since I do not have the body to pull it off.

    16. I find boys much more difficult to sew for... the fit is less forgiving than when making girl's clothes. Making a dress is 100x easier than making trousers and a button down shirt!

    17. My dolls dress typically in historic clothing styles, with a few jeans & t-shirt or sweats outfits for variety.

So I can't buy anyone his or her formal or usual clothing, just the casual stuff. Sigh.
The boy's stuff is a bit more of a pain to fit because the periods I'm interested in usually have quite fitted clothing for the men.
I already know how to drape the skirts for a girl, so that's easier.

But some clothes for the girls requires a lot more layers, especially the nineteeth-century inspired ballgown for Nan, my Ryung.

So both sexes are more difficult to dress. *_*

    18. Now how could any BJD boy or girl be boring.

The only thing that makes a doll boring is if the owner is boring heh heh...it's ture though.

Its all in the eye of the beholder...if you think its boring, sure it boring, if its better than girls then sure its better than girls...if you think there's no difference...then guess what, there's no difference.

      Just what I think:smile:

      And my boy rocks!!

    19. I sew and sell both boy and girl clothing. I own more boys than girls...I am drawn to the boys (as in any new dolls that are put out) more than the girls. I AM trying to even up the score... but I keep seeing these boys that want to come live here!
AND I actually enjoy sewing for the boys more than the girls. I have to force myself to chose one of the girls to sew for.. as I keep being drawn to a boy when its time to start the "next" outfit. Most of the designs in my head are for boys. I really do like my girls... but yeah I have to admit a favourtism towards the boys. Guess thats why sewing for them is easier too.

    20. I think what I have to say has probably been said about a million times over but I'll say it again anyway (So there! XP)...it all depends on the style your girl/boy has.

personally I'm somewhat limited to what I can stick Taro in...leather, gothic or too girly he will NOT wear. He wants nice, simple stuff that won't draw attention to him. Exceptions would be made for elegant period wear or a kimono. But even then colours are important. So he's pretty damn fussy in a plain sort of way. XD

also, although there's a larger variety of styles that women can wear (just like in real life ay?) it all depends on your girls personality. If they're frilly loving things you can jus stick em in jeans or a t-shirt. and vice versa. =)

it all depends on the dolls personalities!
