Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. What? o-O;
Boy dolls are limited to what they can wear? D:

No one ever told me this... I put my boys in whatever I want to put them in, just as I would if I had a girl doll.

    2. I agree this may have been more of an issue in 2006. As someone who is new to the hobby I haven't found there to be considerably less clothing choices for boy dolls. I also find boy clothing cool - from simple men’s suits to elaborate HZ outfits. I just ordered my boy a kilt today - so excited! :)

    3. Well I don't have him yet, but one of the main reasons why my first doll is a boy is because I love men's wear. Suits and tuxes are just so lovely. Plus having a boy totally won't stop me from putting a dress on him if I want too!

    4. Now that I have male dolls, I can say they are more challenging for me. I have a lot of fun dressing the girls...but I don't have a good style nailed down for the boys yet; most of what I find just isn't right for them. I don't want them to be bland, but I don't want them to be over-the-top either. I can't find the right little niche.

    5. i love dressing up my girl dolls, there's so much more you can do with a girl den a boy.
But then again, there are many boy dolls who are cross dressed into pretty girls too!~

    6. I actually think this hobby is skewed in favor of boy dolls. There are just as many accessories and different outfits for boys as there are girls. Sometimes more.

    7. Actually my 1st BJD was a male because I wanted to sew male clothing. I'm a roleplayer and have a very feminine figure so I already had a lots of clothes made by myself to wear. While male clothing was rather new to me.
Yes, some female clothing are harder to make due to the curved shape of the body (and I like it to fit tight!). But some male clothing is a real challenge, and I often make tucks in male clothing too)))

I ended up with 2 males and 1 female so there is no preference for me actually, I like to sew for both genders.

No, I do not feel that male wardrobe is limiting, it's just how far your imagination goes. More, my dollie men wear cosplay and historical clothing, there is so much to explore!

    8. I find this a problem with male dolls too. Even though I have 3 boys (although one is a Harajuku boy so he's easy to dress)
and another on the way I don't look at boys clothes on doll sites because I don't really find them inspiring, I only really bother with them when I have to buy something new. This seems to be a problem in other areas too - I love video games where you can customise characters (the things I can do on Soul Calibur IV!) but it is so frustrating because while the girls can be anything from bunny girls to nuns the boys are always stuck with hideous cheesy armour and typical "barbarian beefcake" or Final Fantasy rip off gear. YAWWWWN.

    9. While I want a few female dolls in the future, boy dolls are fine for the moment, lol. XD
I think they're easier to sew for. I don't have to deal with sewing to accomodate boobs... yet. Lol.

    10. Totally! That is one reason why I wanted to get a big girl, because they are so~ much fun to dress up!!

But that must also be why my guys seem pretty girly....
I just love to dress them up differently and the moment they have something that is remotely fashionable they are taken for girls, girly guys, gays, etc. xD
But most of them still have a pretty limited wardrobe...

I even think guys are even harder to dress!!! Girls get anything while guys you have to be careful xD

    11. I don't have my doll yet, but I actually want a boy doll because I think it would be a challenge for me personally. I'm used to females when it comes to dolls, and character-wise, I'm still more familiar with creating girls. Planning out my boy has opened up some doors in regard to my imagination, so, in short, I don't think a boy doll would be less of a challenge, but rather the opposite!

    12. IMO girls are so much more easy. It's so easy to do a girl faceup. It's so easy to buy/make them clothes.

    13. They're plenty challenging! Sometimes you want something not too frilly or dressy or punk-looking. A lot of fashions are like that; if you don't want trendy, you have to come up with your dolls own brand of style. (Plus, pants are a challenge to sew all on their own.)

So I definitely think boys are a challenge to create a wardrobe for.

    14. I do not feel limited by BJD boys at all. In fact, I have more boys than girls among my BJD and, to be honest, male wardrobe is much bigger than female one at home. About outfits out of character, their variety in clothes, although usually casual, is wide enough to enjoy with exceptional - In special occasions - changes.

    15. Not at all! I used to had a girl doll, but I felt I just like boy better....and now I have all boy dolls!
I never tired to play them~

    16. I don't find BJD boys limiting at all. I much prefer them to girls actually. Which would be why I have only one girl doll. There are a wide array of clothing options for boy dolls in most sizes though I do find clothes for yo-sized boys a bit limited. Even without cross dressing my boys have many options in styles. The price of clothing is the only thing that limits my boys styles.

    17. Personally, I think male dolls are MORE of a challenge, because it takes more creativity to come up with new designs for them. So far Yoru's wardrobe consists of many t-shirts in various colors, because I haven't come up with anything else for him. ^_^; Sage, my little fashonista, is a bit difficult as well because he wears feminine clothing, but I don't want for ALL of it to look like a girl should be wearing it. And his fashion sense is a bit hard to pin down as well.

Of course, I don't have any females yet, so I can't say for certain if my guys' clothes are really harder or not.

    18. I'm finding the fact that I have a boy a little bit of a challenge. THe wardrobe for them is so limited, and since he is a Minime as well kinda makes it more hard as I want to match a character of him but finding clothes for that is even harder!

Other than that I like him a lot and wouldn't give him up for the world!

    19. Ya know, I actually find it way harder to dress a boy doll! It's precisely because they have less options (if they're not wearing traditionally feminine clothing like dresses) that I have trouble making them look good and cute. I personally love dressing my girl more because she has more adorable stuff available but I do so love the chase of trying to find boy's clothes that aren't Little Lord Fauntelroy-ish! Not that there's anything wrong with that style, of course, but because it is more common and popular for YoSD sized boys than traditionally masculine clothes, it's tough to find high quality, cute boy clothing.

    20. I've always loved boy dolls but never found any good ones until finding BJDs. I don't find boy stuff limiting at all although I do admit it was easier dressing my SD13 boy than my Hounds. There is just so much cool SD13 stuff out there. I spent most of my twenties in clubs and at raves so I've had my fill of the goth/latex/raver etc. club gear that seems so prevalent on BJD girls these days. I much prefer the silliness of my blythes when it comes to enjoying female dollies. My BJD boys are just fun to dress; I too enjoy the beautiful three piece suits and really cool club wear that they can wear.
