Are boy dolls really less of a challenge? More boring? XD

Jan 22, 2006

    1. I'm sure it would be easier for me (and I'm terrible at sewing) to make dresses or skirts for female dolls, but sewing for boys is way more challanging ! And I can't say that boy's clothes are limited - the only limit is your imagination. I'm trying to come up with new ideas for fantasy or quasi-historical costumes or robes. Sometimes it works better, sometimes it doesn't work at all, but it's always a lot of fun.

    2. Not boring at all. I find them very challenging, esp. my first boy is a j-rock musician & pretty flamboyant... ^^; I dunno why, but I always find so many outfits that will match their personality out there, so it's a fun thing to do~ I never get bored with it~ XD

    3. Only hard part I have with owning a MSD Boy is the lack of "adult" clothes. No real options with suits out there. I actually find I'm more picky with the boy clothes over the girl clothes. I just wish the companies would realize not all mini boys are little boys and some are adults and expand the clothing options out there. Formal dress can do wonders especially with layers. Boys can dress in layers far easier and look real good doing it ^^

    4. Ffff, unless you're sticking with a modern day wardrobe, which I find very boring no matter what gender, males have just as many choices as females. Almost. But I personally dislike dresses and skirts anyways, so it's no big loss there. XD Fancy suits, long robes, outfits from various countries and time periods are looove.

    5. Well I suppose its what you want out of their characters that equals how "boring" their outfits are going to be. For me my bjd characters are going to be french aristocrat's which is very elaborate. So much so that I may have to buy my outfits for him when I get him. :/

    6. Man, I find boys so much more fun to dress up! Plus, I find it easier to mix and match clothes on them (I never have outfit sets, it's always a little here and a little there).

With girls I feel that you always have to dress them up elaborately or else they won't stand out as much, unless it's a boy who doesn't have to look so froofed up.

Lately I've been getting into casual urban styles and for me, a simple but edgy wardrobe is good enough for my boy. :D

    7. Well, currently I have one girl and one boy and the girl is definitely easier to dress. She's more fun to shop for as well (which is less fun for my bank account! ;D) I also find myself taking her to more places because I imagine my boy would be disinterested and wouldn't really want to go to these places... His personality doesn't really like getting his photo taken either, so I guess, to onlookers, it would seem that I liked my girl more as she gets her photo taken more often and has more clothes, but I don't. I love them both equally, just in a different way. :3
Anyway. I love having a boy because there are so many adorable boy clothes that just look awful on Jasper (my girl) but look super cute on Quinn (my boy) and they just have a completely different look, feel, personality, etc so I adore having them both around.
So, no, I wouldn't say it's any more 'fun' (for me), it's just different.
Oh, and they are definitely not less of a challenge! xD The reason Quinn has less clothes than Jasper is because I never find anything nice enough for him! Same for photoshoots with him - I can't just take him anywhere, it has to be somewhere I know he'd like.. So I dunno if this is just my boy who's difficult or what, but he's definitely not less of a challenge. :P

    8. I really don't think boys are more limiting than girls. I can't even wrap my mind around the idea! This may very well have something to do with a current overload of lolita dresses in my head ;p

There maybe less quantity available for them in ready to buy stuff, but for me that is not a measure of limitation.

    9. I guess of my two dolls yes the boy is boring ha ha I don't feel like smothering him like i do my girl doll. She has so much stuff compared to him but all he wanted was her so I guess he is content. I usually let him stand there and stare at her but I will pick her up and show her to people because he wants to be left alone.

    10. For me, my boys are more challenging because it's hard for me to find the right...well...ANYTHING for them. It took me forever to find Akira a wig that suited him. I have been known to buy just whatever inexpensive, plain clothes I can find for them because it's better than having them be naked, but I refuse to spend a lot of money on something that doesn't suit them (why is it so hard to find hakama sets for boys? I've only found three and at least one is completely sold out now). But I like the boys and it's great to have dolls for my favorite characters, many of whom are boys, so I keep getting boys. I just have to make them more or be a little less picky in terms of what clothes I'm willing to buy them.

    11. I don't think that boys are less challenging. Even if there is more of a selection for girls, it's the searching for the right outfit that makes them fun. I can't wait until my boy gets here.

    12. I find boys more challenging. Its easy to throw makeup on a girl and be satisfied, but its difficult to do a masculine faceup. At least, for me it is. They end up looking girly half the time.

    13. Pfft if I want to dress up a girl, I'd do it to myself! I think it's totally more fun dressing a boy ouo b!

    14. Personally I think dressing up a boy is more of a challenge! Simply because it is easy to throw together a matching dress and shoes for a girl, while a boy if you want him to be dressed more casually but still fitting your taste, the clothing selection usually leads to you having to either special order or sew yourself. c:

    15. I find that the majority of the girl clothes are in styles that I wouldn't put on a doll of mine (lolli, ultra cute, call girl). Granted, I don't own any girl dolls and have no interest in doing so (with the exception of one character doll who is actually a hermaphrodite), but you can have a lot of fun creating looks for boys.

I make all my boys clothes and they are all the traditional dress of their cultures (which I've created). I can include ruffles and lace and the like to my boy clothes without girlifying them, but it's more of a balancing act to do that and thus, more of a challenge to me.

    16. Really? I always thought boys would be a lot harder, because for one; Skirts = easier to sew than pants and shorts.
And there are a lot more girl clothes out there than boy clothes, so they're easier to find. I also, as a designer and seamstress, find designing girl clothes are a lot easier than boys'.
I agree that there is less that you can do with a boy... But the challenge is fun, it doesn't make them boring!

    17. I have three girls and one boy. It is infinitely more difficult to make things for my boy because the intricate nature of in scale boy clothes make my brain explode. I do find myself getting bored with him faster because I can't make things for him as quickly as the girls- I could make matching costumes for the three of them in the same amount of time it takes to make him a plain pair of pants. Very discouraging.

I do adore him anyways, buuuuut.. I've kind of moved to just photographing him nude because I can't bother with trying to clothe him any longer. He doesn't seem to mind. Neither do the girls.

    18. It's popular knowledge that women have a range of clothing far larger than men usually have. My dolls don't usually wear casual clothes, so the possibilities that dresses offers me is massive, but my boy only wears suits, may be adding a cape, apart of his shinsengumi kimono. Apart of suits, I don't find any more clothes that really impress me to dress my boy. So, for me, boys are more boring in that case. For the rest... Mostly the same.

    19. WHAAT?!
Funny... I *never* thought of boys as limiting... at all, lol. There's a lot of things you can do with male clothing. I mean some nice lolita dresses I've seen are really pretty, but the nice ones are expensive, look complicated and come with like, a million pieces... and impossible for me to make. I don't know, with girls (as someone already said) it's like you have to dress them up elaborately for them to stand out... (I actually mistook a owner's female doll as male because it was wearing really plain clothes - loose, normal baggy shirt and jeans) because male dolls are already so effeminate looking. Though I have seen females sporting a butch look, and they've looked really nice, I guess it all depends on the sculpt.. :/ I'm so biased... I never want to own a female doll, they just don't appeal to me! You can dress your boys up as girls or they can be guys... double win. xD

    20. if i had a girl she would likely end up to wear all my boys clothes, because i don't like all the frilly pinky things and dress for females. :XD:

but i don't, so .. and yes, there less choices about wardrobe for boys, but who cares? i don't. you can just wrap a tissue on his waist and you made a cloth for him. XD and he would look sexy , too. at least, my boys. :P
