Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. I'm certainly not attracted to fantasy dolls automatically, but I think they're beautiful works of art. I appreciate that there are hundreds of human sculpts, and only a few with animal features (though their numbers are growing quickly). Of my dolls and wish list, the majority are human in appearance, with a scant few having elf ears because I do have two fantasy races in my little world. One doll I plan to mod into a fantasy doll myself, because no one makes the style that I need. But in general, it is the doll as a whole and the character behind it that I am drawn to, regardless of how fantastic it is.

    2. Dolls aren't more attractive to me just because of elf ears, horns, etc. despite the fact that I absolutely love fantasy.

The most important part of the doll and is what ultimately makes me notice a doll is the face (except Volks! The bodies are what captured my attention first).

Much as I love elf ears, I would also be very picky about them. I don't like the super long ears on elves (I prefer the sort of short pointed ears, like the elves had in the Lord of the Rings movies). So for me, and elf doll is not quite in the picture unless I love a mold.

As for other fantasy dolls, most of them are just not my thing. They can look gorgeous, but for the most part, I wouldn't be interested in owning one.

    3. Fantasy dolls are definitly more attractive to me especially elves and vampires, I love how realistic they look with that little bit of fantasy in them.

I would rather own many fantasy dolls then many regular, humanoid looking dolls even though the human looking dolls are just as beautiful. I just like the fantasy features that most of the dolls have more then the humanoid features.

    4. Yes, they are, but then I take off the fantasy parts. XD

I think many of the fantasy dolls just have a better face sculpt. =/ For example, Bygg and Euclase. I bought both, but split off the fantasy legs, because they just didn't appeal to me.

    5. It depends to the mod..
if the mod is nice, then yea it is more attractive.. Thats in my op though.

    6. I love this trend in fantasy mods for dolls.

Many of them, especially the SOOM brand, come with extra parts so that you can choose when and how much of a fantasy element they have to them.

I love regular dolls, but I base my dolls off my characters, and a few of them are fantastical.

I'm not sure if this makes them more attractive then regular dolls. I do find they catch my eye more, standing out a bit, and usually they tend to have a lot of detail and thought put into them.

They're nice variation, and I'm glad they're in the market, but I certainly don't want them to become the only types of dolls out there! :)

    7. to me they're interesting especially the Soom ones. its nice to see alot of fantasy doll here.

    8. I tend to like a healthy mix. That is, dolls with hooves or wings that have very human like face ups and dress very plainly. I am DEFINITELY not a fan of extreme fantasy stuff like unnatural hair color (electric pink/blinding lime green) or face ups that stray to far from "natural" or generic "gothic" looks.

    9. I'm not attracted to fantasy dolls yet they seem to be attracted to me, and they currently outnumber my "normal" dolls. Perhaps I'm subconsciously attracted to them.

    10. I usually prefer human dolls by a landslide, just because I'm so used to hearing the whole 'oh well I have an original character who is like half angel half fox half elf half demon princess from the moon and she's like eternal and can make anyone fall in love with her, yadda yadda' shpiel in my travels on the internet, so the novelty of having a non-human character has kinda worn off. Elves and vampires don't really get me anymore. (In fact, whenever I go look at Bobobie, I always think 'So pretty.....but.....elf ears.....could you sand those off and make them normal? :doh")

But, I really enjoy fantasy things that HAVEN'T been overdone. When Soom made Glot and Glati I pretty much peeped. Faun babies. Hrrrngh. So cute!

    11. I prefer fantasy dolls and made up dolls like the circus ones as for me half the fun of this is the make belive part. I adore the dolls with elven/pixie ears and pink/purple/rainbow coloured hair and pointy ears could make the difference between choosing a doll, regardless of if the none elfy doll had a prettier face. For me the ears make the doll inherently more beautiful.

I get where Honey Delilah is coming from, and yeah that sort of thing almost made me not want elven dolls/characters. I changed my mind though because I love the fantasy races and its silly to me to stop liking them just because youngsters go overboard about it.

    12. I'm currently in the process of adopting a few new dolls, and I already see myself steering away from the more "human" like dolls, and more towards the dolls with elf ears. I also prefer the 10-14CM dolls. Although, I've always been interested in fantasy realms anyway, so for me, I guess it just makes sense.

    13. BACK in the day, (like 2008 xP )
I did really care, fantasy or SI-FI, it was all a matter of what it had to offer.
Well now I lean in favor of Fantasy, but, hey, things change. Now dose this have to do with dolls? I would say regular fantasy dolls kinda bore me, you know just pointy ears or fangs.
      Same with regular dolls.
I would say if I ever make a doll, it would probably be a three headed dog BJD.
At lest that would be semi new. What I tend to see with BJDs is that some cases repetitiveness is often repeated, even with the animal dolls. The only company I see really extending from the "norm" fantasy and the "norm" non-fantasy dolls is Soom.
And that company who makes the tron looking doll.

    14. I really don't remember if I replied to this before but, here I go again anyway! xD

My answer is a very big YES YES YES.
Back when I first started buying dolls, I selected my first new doll straight from the company with human ears, though the doll also had an elf ear option.
At the time I felt that having a doll who could only have elf ears would be somewhat limiting, even though I loved fairies and such.
Of course not I completely regret this decision and wish I'd gone with the elf ear option! It only took me a month after buying her to get stuck in this new mindset also.

The more fantasy dolls I bring home/order, the worse it gets too.
I've now decided to avoid human dolls from now on and am slowly convincing myself to sell all my human dolls or find ways to make them less human.
2 dolls I parted with, my remaining 5 dolls who essentially look human (though their characters are not) are either going to be giving new parts or parted with eventually.

Basically, I really just don't feel much for human dolls anymore simply because none of the characters I have in my head are human.
I'm not a fan of the real world and my dolls reflect that.

    15. I haven't bought my first BJD yet, but I can safely say that human dolls appeal to me far more than fantasy. I'm not sure whether it's because I find humans more versatile, but only one fantasy doll has ever appealed to me--Soom Beryl. And as she was an monthly doll and has been gone for some time, she's pretty impossible to procure except secondhand through insane markups.

Don't get me wrong, I still find fantasy dolls attractive. In fact, I find them quite beautiful, I just can't ever see myself owning one. If anything, I'd probably be the "Ohcrap, a ledge, let's not set her there, she might fall!" owner, which I don't think I could much deal with. I suppose that the reason I prefer human dolls is because when I was younger to avoid creating stereotypical characters (You know the kind, the ten-year-old-created all-powerful creature whatever who does everything oh-so-perfectly.) I limited myself to humans, and made certain that I flawed them as humans are. It's a bit of a security zone now, I guess.

    16. Well, most of the dolls I own are "human", I have only two fantasy ones. I cannot go with the vampire theme, the fangs bother me too much haha. But yeah, the two fantasy ones i own are both MD, but I have a Cass coming and she is all human. So I guess it depends on what kind of fantasy doll it is.

    17. I thought I preferred human dolls - then I got SOOMed by Alk and Yrie. Those little wings are too adorable!

    18. It's funny, my sis and me were discussing this today. She has, in her collection, very human-looking dolls, Amber is the only exception at home for her that's like that. But I'm slowly dragging her into my world, which is definitely populated with the more fantasy-themed dolls. ;) I'm just as happy to let my Euclase sit around without his bird-feet on most of the time, understand, but it's a component of the doll I find compelling all the same.

But if the overall sculpt doesn't appeal, I will not buy, I didn't buy a single bjd for months after I got Heliot, (excepting Amber, which I ordered for sissy), nothing really grabbed me again until mid-summer. Now I'm awash in grabby hands again, I have Soom orders out the yin-yang, I have an Angelheim Zion paid off and just put an Iplehouse Luna on layaway (come on, grey skin plus kitty face? Yeah!). However when I go to look at, say, Zion, I marvel at the beauty of his face before I think about the awesomeness of his gorgon snakes (actually went to the site tonight to drill a little with anticipation).

So cool to have the choice, however. :) I think that's the thing I love about the hobby, it's like a constantly expanding bjd universe of choice. :fangirl:

    19. Not automaticly. I do really like well planned, sculpted, finished fantasy dolls but not always more than the equivalent in none fantasy dolls. It's just coincidence 3 out of 5 boys here are elf ear, one of those having hooves. Their all in modern styled clothing regardless of how their ears could poke yer eye out, however, as I'm not a fan of high fantasy styles in general.

    20. TBH, I totally agree with you. I think some companies are just pushing the "fantasy look" for its sake instead of really investing in creativity. It has begun to look cheap actually. I think, okay, fantasy dolls are all right, but not just for having unusual features, but for being properly sculpted and designed. I think some companies have nailed the elf ear, not really a lot of them. I actually find that a lot of the companies have dipped into the genre without knowing much about it.
