Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. Fantasy dolls aren't my thing at all, not that I don't appreciate their beauty, but I wouldn't own one. In fact, I almost didn't buy my human Heliot because he has pointy ears. I'd seriously mod them if I wasn't so scared too. ; _ ;

    2. I've been thinking more about this question and I've come to a conclusion of sorts.

At first, I was pretty so-so about them but lately, I'm really starting to find myself quite liking them. They're unusual and not often seen as much as human dolls. Most of my characters though do find themselves sharing their single body with some other "force" so being able to switch from human to fantasy is a pretty attractive thing for me. I tend to want to buy fantasy parts and hybrid my current human dolls with them rather than buying a full on fantasy doll. It just gives me a wider option to play with in terms of creating the look I want.

    3. It's interesting. I started out liking the more fantastical dolls. The ones with the wild fantasy parts and beautiful fantasy faceup's. However, while I do still love the fantasy dolls, I have been slowly edging toward the more realistic dolls in my own collection. I suppose I realized that while I do love fantasy dolls and I admire them, I just can't do anything I like with them. I think I will just admire what other people are doing with them and keep to realism. ;)

    4. I'm curious as to why this is. I don't mean to pick on you personally as I've seen this sentiment expressed throughout various forums I visit and I honestly don't understand it. Why can't fantasy creatures/BJDs be just as versatile in not only their 'personalities' but their looks as humans can? One might argue-oh, well a faun doll can only have hooves, that's a bit limiting. How? It's no more limiting than (most) humans having feet. Hooves can be decorated and made up in a huge array just as shoes can be. Or one might argue elves need to represent a sense of grace and otherworldy beauty. Well....why? Not all humans want to portray the same image so why do all elves?

I think if someone feels that fantasy creatures are limited to archetypes, it's because that individual wants to be limited. We as humans all look so vastly different from one another yet we are all built off the same basic skeleton. Fantasy creatures are no different.

Btw, this isn't an arguement stating that everyone MUST love fantasy creatures, of course we all have our own different tastes and there are many fantasy elements I myself do not particularly take to. I'm just pointing out that I think shying away from fantasy dolls as they might seem limited in what types of looks and characters they can take on doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

    5. Not at all. I prefer human-dolls over fantasy-dolls. However, I like those magnetic parts like horns or wings.. you can take them off when you need them to be gone. That creates a certain flexability when it comes to story-making 'n stuff. And I like that. 83

    6. No really to me....
It's depening to the characters I have...
ALmost all my characters arehumans, so I'm not really interested in fantastic dolls.
ut I have to say that sometimes they are really attractive! ^0^

    7. While looking at dolls, I find that most of favorites are the human-looking dolls. Though, most of my characters that I write with are humans. However, some fantasy dolls are very beautiful and sometimes catch my eye. :D

    8. Although I love looking at photos of fantasy dolls and seeing what others do with them, I personally wouldn't like to own one. I owned a doll with horns and hoofs for one week before turning around and selling it; I personally felt it limited the creative possiblilites I could project onto it.

Sometimes, I find fantasy dolls are so elaborate as a whole, that they're just a bit too much for my tastes. I tend to find more beauty in modest designs. :3

      ------

ADDITION: In regards to newer options made available recently by companies:

While I have recently seen some truly lovely fantasy type dolls, and I have seen several that I would love to costume and think they would fit my aesthetic sense... I have one major problem; either I dislike the face or I like the face but dislike the type of fantasy parts. And with so many fantasy dolls being limited in release and resin colour, a hybrid is rarely an option. :(

    9. I love fantasy, and mostly science fiction, but I just cannot see myself owning one. Many people have many beautiful fantasy dolls, and I do enjoy looking at them. The word SOOM is synonymous with fantasy to me, and I don't think I've ever honestly browsed that website, which I find slightly amusing, since the only doll I own so far is a Soom Gem Laon. While Heliot and all those other dolls are very beautiful, they are not for me.

Magnetic horns or wings could be a possibility in the future for me, but permanent additives are very unlikely. My girlfriend and I want to do a series in bjd form, and one of the minor characters is the son of Satan. If we ever do it, and ever get to him, then I would love some horns! However, fantasy dolls are not for me.

I like projecting my own creativity onto the dolls, and I like plain old boring sculpts. I think if I owned a fantasy doll, I'd end up selling it to a home who would truly love it, or I'd buy human features for it. I'm also a writer and I always write about human situations. Even now, when I'm writing my first action/adventure/science fiction, everyone is human. People are my favorite subject and so far, I like them as boring and human as possible.

I'm fascinated by how many people on this page said "no" to fantasy dolls, it seems like everyone owns those gorgeous things!

    10. I'm actually fairly annoyed by most of the Soom fantasy parts, though I'm not exactly sure why.... And stupidly enough, the two newest dolls on my wishlist are Souldoll Shiva in WS and Soom Monzo with the gargoyle feet and claws. Other than that I definitely prefer humans, which is a bit contradictory, as most of my non-doll characters are NOT humans, and my favorite genres are sci-fi and fantasy.

But I would like to add that most of the Soom fantasy parts, as much as they may annoy me, are very beautiful and I do respect them. I just don't want to own them, so more for everyone else!

    11. I'm a fan of both very realistic dolls (ie: Iplehouse, Limhwa, some SoulDoll) & Fantastic dolls (Soom MD's, mostly). I like them for different reasons & Soom is the "industry leader", so to speak, in creating awesome dolls w/beautiful faces & human parts, as well as amazing fantasy "additions".

    12. I tried the Soom hooved kids and the fact staying and sitting was a trick frustrated me to much. I like elf ears but basically that is it.

    13. I like most fantasy parts, as long as to me they 'fit' the doll. Sometimes I see fantasy dolls and think ''but that doll just doesn't 'look' like a vampire/faerie/etc" I really don't like hooves...I don't really like animal dolls like volks zuzus and things, they just aren't my kind of dolls.

    14. Meh. I appreciate their beauty, but I don't think I would want one. Maybe if it had hooves or something. I like taurs. I think they're cute! ^^

It's strange... all my dolls are female and all my stuffed animals are male. So I guess if I get a fantasy doll, it would have to be a guy??? I know, I'm weird. XP

    15. For me, yes! I love fantasy face-ups, fantasy parts fantasy fantasy FANTASY!! >.<
My dolls are an escape from the real world for me, so why not have them be zombies and faeries and whatnot? plus, all my characters are fantasy creatures anyway!
I don't have any issues with more human or "normal" dolls, in fact I do have a human doll myself-though he is far from normal in my opinion :sweat
I grew up playing with dolls like barbie, and I would always get frustrated that they all looked the same and I remember my favorite one had legs, a torso and a head each from different original dolls and I pretended she was a cyborg to explain her mismatched skintones:sweat
After discovering BJDs and later den of angels, and finding out just how customizable these dolls are I was AMAZED and I like to customize my dolls as much as possible-from face-ups, to mods to hybrids, genderbending sculpts, the works! So my dolls typically end up being fantasy themed, because it opens up so many different possible customizations in my book than Human dolls.;)

    16. I write fantasy and other speculative fiction, so dolling was supposed to be an extension of that hobby - bringing my characters to life by designing a dolls of them. Being a huge fan of fantasy and mythology, I'm wild for the centaurs and fairies dolls, werewolves and classical gods. Island Dolls have an Apollo and Artemis, and although they don't match my image of the divine twins, I still want them.
I had the impression that fantasy was more popular in dolling community. When I bought my Puki I thought I easily find some fairy-wear to dress him in on Etsy, but its seems to me most people dress tinies as modern children. Lovely, but not my style. It's given me the opportunity to re-learn sewing though...

    17. I am personally in love with just about anything and everything fantasy related, so I absolutely love fantasy themed dolls. The first ones I came across were (no surprise here) Soom's MDs. I love seeing what people do with human dolls since they are still highly customizable and by no means have to be "human" per say...I mean, how human can you be if you have red eyes, hm? But that's just me. I have been rping for many years and a lot of my characters are a bit on the more fantastical side of things (part dragons/demons/etc) and that's the way I like it. I use these sort of things as an escape from reality (as I've seen a few others mention they do as well) and so I love having dolls that are different like that. Of course, that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy a certain doll just because it doesn't have fantasy parts. That's what customization is for. You can add horns, add parts from other dolls (if they fit lol), do fantasy themed face ups, mod the mold itself, whatever. And that's what I love about these dolls in general. There is a way to incorporate your own style into them, no matter what it is. I've been finding myself scouring the interwebs for fantasy parts that I can collect while I wait for an actual doll to put them on (is that sad?), but since the ones I want are from limited dolls, I figure better to snatch them up now while I can and figure out what to use them for later :P

      [/long-windedness]

    18. i love both kind of dolls they are just beautiful

    19. I would not buy a fantasy doll myself. I do not know why, but I feel completely turned off to a sculpt when it has elf ears, vampire teeth, or anything of the like; however, this only applies to when I am looking to buy a doll mainly because all of my characters are human. On the other hand, when I see other people's fantasy dolls, I can find them just as attractive as human dolls. I have loved fantasy and sci-fi for years and I can appreciate a beautiful elf or vampire as much as the next person. In fact, I absolutely adore dolls that have ram horns for some reason, I just happen to find that they look majestic.

In short, I can see the beauty in fantasy dolls but I wouldn't have a place for them in my home.

    20. Honestly, I've been liking human sculpts so far. I love elves and other fantasy/folktale/mythological beings (the exception being any vampire who's name isn't "Spike"), but the fantasy BJDs just haven't been speaking to me. Maybe it's just something about the shapes, but I'm really not sure. And I just dislike vampire fangs.

The typical me response to fantasy BJDs: "Meh. My D&D character drawings were prettier. The face is all wrong here."
