Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. i like human more :) but for some chars fantasyears would be good :D

    2. I like them all! There is so much creativity involved whether it's a fantasy or more human bjd. Right now I have RP Soso on the way which will be more elfish obviously but then I want to add a Pong for more fantasy cuteness & one day an Unoa for more human photoshoots.

    3. I love fantasy sculpts. I prefer the more subtle elf-ears to the trend of bigger-and-bigger ears, like the discontinued Asleep Eidolon Alice's ears. Oh my god SO adorable.

My dolls are a good mix of fantasy and non-fantasy, though. Anya is the limited DollZone Shoyo with kitty-ears, Thalatta is a ResinSoul Jun with the awesome finny-ears, Carin's got fangs, and Kithara is...well, pretty obviously fantasy, with her giant scorpion tail of awesome.

The other five, though, are not fantasy sculpts. They have some fantasy aspects in their character -- Daphne's half-Fairy, Chia's a grass sprite, Yánzi is a mutant, and then there's Miyuki with her sci-fi genetic experiment background -- but their sculpts are completely human.

    4. I like both fantasy and human dolls. I find them both beautiful, just in different ways. ^^

    5. I love fantasy dolls!! I shiver with every new fantasy realease XD ... I want every pointed-ear doll I see

    6. I prefer normal dolls. In my mind, a normal doll is much more versatile that a fantasy sculpt. I hate when I find a beautiful sculpt for a character of mine and it has elf ears. :sweat It's very frustrating.

I guess if I had more fantasy characters it wouldn't matter. :sigh

    7. I really like the idea of elf ears on my Arnora Rose doll...

    8. Hmmm... The first response on reading the starter post was "No, just not for me" but as I was reading through the whole thread today (I know, I'm nuts) I pondered that, and pondered some more.

I am a huge fantasy, science fiction and science fantasy fan, and have been since I was little, I remember climbing onto my dad's lap for another chapter of The Hobbit every night, etc. I also write in all those genres, and have nothing in my writing notebook that doesn't fall into one of them. But while I enjoy looking at other people's fantasy dolls, very, very few have caught me enough to say that I want to own it beyond a first or second look (and I will not let myself impulse buy for this hobby.)

I think I'm far more critical of the sculpt style on fantasy structured dolls, and they just aren't measuring up, they just don't match my fantasy. I'll see a new fantasy doll sculpt and think it's gorgeous, wish I could get it, look at it again a couple days later, and see all the little things that would annoy me in the long run about the sculpt, things like feeling the hands or feet are neat, but they shouldn't be on the same doll. And I only have thoughts of getting one doll with non-human traits for a pre-existing character (most of my wish-list is dolling characters I already have running around my writing notebooks) and Elf Sabik has pretty mild elf ears. The majority of elf eared dolls are a turn off to me, it took me a while to accept that Deedlit was an elf way back when. With all the dyes, wigs, and contact lenses available to humans these days I really don't see non-human standard versions of those as an aspect of fantasy. And given some of the things walking down fashion runways I'm not going to consider any clothing fantasy. Fantasy paintwork is fascinating, and I have plans for a lot more.

My doll plans include non-permanent fantasy customizations on several dolls, in the form of: paintwork, three/four (one's half done for a current doll) sets of removable wings, and one/two removable tails (again, one is partially done for a current doll). My current fantasy-modded doll has subtle ear reshaping, which is usually hidden by his wig, distinctive paintwork (including scales), a tail tied around his elastics (which needs some work), and wings he almost never wears because they're too much of a hassle along with being incomplete.

The only really fantasy structured dolls on my wish-list are: Dollfactory Bobo (who I started doubting I wanted as I read over this thread), Volks SDC Kurt (who I think would be more of a cabinet baby than any other BJD I might ever own), and Domadoll Uni Sanmanuel... I fell in love with the Domadoll Uni centaurs while turning Blakrose's into a buckskin, they're not a perfect structured, highly detailed sculpt... but they are insanely cute. Scary part is, I think if I went for a detailed centaur sculpt I'd have to mod it to be like the World of Tiers centaurs (Philip Jose Farmer - Maker of Universes, etc), and that would just be scary to have around.

Oh, and I just ignore fanged sculpts, I don't like vampires, just not my thing, and this despite being a dhampir (at least according to old Slavic folklore.)

      Oh my I'm long-winded...

    9. I do like fantasy, but I'm a bit more picky with my dolls.
I got the BB Weylin because I really liked his face, and the ears weren't too bad. In the same spirit- I'm probably not going to get Mu full-set because I really don't like his face or ears. I do like fauns though.
And one of my fairies is a BB Espree with human ears.. It depends o what I like

    10. Fantasy dolls definately appeal to me more than the regular ones.

    11. Personally I prefer human dolls for myself but I do love looking at other peoples fantasy dolls. I love the vampire dolls and I really love the hooved dolls.

    12. I like human dolls and fantasy dolls the same as long as they have the standard humanoid body. Hooves aren't really my thing. I just got my first doll a RS Mei and she has elf ears. I really like elf ears and it suits her very well and that's part of why i picked her. I consider her an elf but mostly human in nature. I don't plan to dress her in "fantasy" looking clothing and she's a normal 18 year old girl in my mind.

    13. XD Sure thing lol. Fantasy dolls do attract me more because there is something special about their sculpts. I love my chrome's wolfy paws xD Soom has been doing a marvelous job at their fantasy sculpts. :3

    14. I love fantasy dolls. demon and elf are sooo pretty.
I personilty always felt that the vampire one look abit fake to me.. ( but that me)
I am thinking about making demon horns for my little girl... I love them soo much...
aslong as they have been done well.. I have seen some that I hated..

    15. I LOVE fantasy dolls! Most of my planned doll family will be fantasy creatures (two fauns, a centaur, a dryad, a kappa, and a kitsune...). I do like, however, dolls that can be easily converted from fantasy to human and back.

    16. I've loved fantasy-type characters and settings ever since I was a little girl, so I'd have to say yes. ^_^ Sometimes I'll see a human that is appealing to me, but the ones I want usually have an unnatural beauty about them in my eyes, so I guess I'm sort of particular about them. I prefer elves, demons, satyrs, anthros, and other similar things for the most part.

    17. Huh... I don't know that it's necessarily a "debate" if the answer is either yes or no. ;)

That having been said - I love my elves. I really do. But my collection is about half-and-half, really. I'm an equal opportunity resin-lover?

    18. I love elves and fairies! And thinking of a doll with normal human ears... it's a big no for me. My dolls have elf ears and my future dolls are going to have elf ears. Oh well, it's a big challenge of course and makes a huge limit when looking dolls... (sometimes it's a good thing, less spending! ^^) But I still could use some mermaid ears or similar, I like those too... ^^ So, yes, I love fantasy dolls more!

    19. I think its a yes for me, the idea of fangs or wings are beautiful

    20. I love fantasy and supernatural creatures, but I tend to prefer more human sculpts. I don't, however, like those insanely long elf ears because one, they mess with the wig and two, are way too long that is distracting. I feel the same about vampire fangs and such. I have to say, cute and dainty elf ears with a slight point to them but still look close to human ears are becoming interesting to me. They are so darn cute.
