Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. Since my art background centered on portrait painting, and I have always been a sci-fi/fantasy buff, I tend to gravitate toward the fantasy dolls first, but I judge each doll individually when I consider a purchase.
First, I am drawn to the face, then to the body and how it aesthetically appeals to me. Add on parts are considered in the same way. I love the ears, wings, horns, etc. But not so much hooves, oddly shaped appendages, or anything that would interfere with possible clothing choices. Not for my personal taste.
I have no problem with the basic concepts of such pieces, and can appreciate them for their artistic value, even though I might not want to own one.
I evaluate my completely human dolls on the same level; as individuals.
I do have one bone of contention with the Vampire doll sculpts. Why do so many companies insist that all Vampires have pointy ears? Very few fictional Vampires I have read about had pointed ears. Most Vampires started out as humans (in fiction), so suddenly they sprout pointed ears after turning?
The fang thing is another discussion. Fang placement bothers me on some dolls. The doll that I feel most correctly represents where the fangs should be placed, is the Soom Gluino Vampire Alchemist.
In my personal opinion, I don't mind seeing a tip of a fang showing. On 5 Star Quintus, I think it's very cute, almost adorable. But I can say that there are some dolls out there that I do not care for the way the fang thing has been dealt with. If Vampire fangs are supposed to be retractable, a normal human looking doll could be dressed as a Vampire and be fine without showing a tooth.
All boiled down, I love dolls...all types of dolls...and I select each one on an individual basis. There are so many wonderful dolls out now, that there is something for everyone's tastes. Doll diversity makes this hobby so rewarding.

    2. I like both kinds equally.
May be creating bright memorable human character takes more time and effort, but it just make the game more interesting)
And I love fantasy dolls very much. It seems because I hadn't have such beauties in my childhood:lol:

    3. I LOVE tinies with hooves. They're just the cutest combo. And I love beautifully done fantasy dolls in general, but one would never fit into my family.
So I must say the normal dollies. :)

    4. I prefer to dolls that attracts me the most, it didn't matter fantasy or human.

    5. That is a question Im asking myself of late, yes I think I do like the fantasy dolls more, at least at the moment.

    6. I prefer the fantasy dolls and have since my very long ago childhood when I dressed my 1963 Barbie in leaves and pine needles to make her a forest creature. (Have to say a dress made of leaves looked funny with high heel feet and a red bubble cut!):)

    7. My first doll is a 5star Tumnus. He comes with lovely horns but I have to say his smirk is what really drew me. I just like a lovely doll.

    8. hmmm it really depends! My E-an is just human and I think she's just as lovely as her elven counter part I-ra, but My little pukipuki has the cutest little ears >.< and I couldn't imagine her without!

    9. Speaking of fantasy dolls...other than making clothes for them myself, has anyone found a good site to get fairy, elf or other such clothing for MSDs dolls? I love professionally made clothes but am not about to dress my kitty and elf girls in street wear fashions. Not a big fan of the frilly or medieval looks either. I have checked MANY bjd sites, ebay, and etsy. Found a couple of things but not very many. Can someone PM if you know of a good source?
      Thanks in advance...lostkitten

PS I was thinking I should post this in another thread but was not really sure where to go with it. SO I am sorry if it is Offtopic too much.

    10. I definitely prefer the fantasy dolls. I like the unusual and unique. Love elf ears, things with wings and hooved feet! :D

    11. Hmmm, this one confounds me in that I am a huge fantasy fan. I mean big fantasy fan, all sorts of series and art, ever since I was a child, I just love it all, dragons, elves, dwarves, hobbits...dun care, I love it all. However, my dolls? Nope, I see a sculpt and love it's face...if I see it has big ole' elf ears? Gone with the wind, I move on, become immediately uninterested. Now admittedly I have recently thought about just buying sculpt and having it modded off, but at the same time, I like to keep the dolls how they were originally, with their company bodies and all if possible, so I still opt for no mostly. Why is this? Dunno...does it hurt my collection? Nope, still will eventually have too many dolls. Ever? Maybe one day, but at the moment, no interest.

    12. I love fantasy themed dolls. When I see horns, hooves, and non-angelic wings I can't help but gush. It's always intersting to see them shy away from the 'normal' human aspect. I'm personally wanting to design a doll themed from the UnSeelie Court in the Faerie Realm. It's not so much pretty, as fantastic. I'm also partial to the idea of going past the boundries of the usual demon/satyr ideas and create beloved greek creatures some day. Gruesome, but worth it.

    13. That's a legitimate question ...
I just love fantasy dolls.:D With wings, with pointed ears, elf ears, hooves, horns and much more. I can leave to them my ideas and inspiration run free, and they make for my taste. I can live out my fantasy by putting them in performing Doll figures again.;)
But I'm also not averse from normal human-shaped doll, but are more fantasy dolls in my family to prevail.

    14. Unless I'm basing the doll on a specific character of mine, I tend to prefer fantasy dolls. I'm not a big fan of fangs (unless the face is cute rather than the sultry look with half-closed eyes like most vampire dolls) or hooves, but wings, horns, tails and pointed ears are great. I prefer fantasy clothes as well. I don't really have any street fashion for my dolls - it's all historical or fantasy-inspired.

    15. I'm not sure why, but fantasy dolls don't do much for me. Well, I do know why, I guess: I haven't got any characters who are fantasy-ish. I do love fauns and centaurs and I like looking at fantasy dolls very much; I just don't feel like buying them.

    16. I don't think it's so much a love of elf ears or fantasy sculpting that draws me into a doll (I have a mixed bag of normal and fantasy sculpts.) But when I recently took stock of my collection, I was frankly shocked to discover that all their characters were fantasy driven. This really surprised me.:sweat My original goal was to create a group of individuals to share a single, inner-city neighborhood of my own vision...a sort of urban fairytale setting. But it turns out my characters include: the Mad Hatter, a manga Chobit, a ghost girl, a ghost fairy, a genie, a coyote girl, a cat girl, a mexican day of the dead girl, a gargoyle, a pokemon trainer, and an animatron. I hadn't even realized I'd amassed a fantasy collection!:? I thought my fantasy reading and convention days were far behind me (as in "been there, done that",) and I don't dress my dolls in fantasy costumes or anything...but I guess this is proof positive that after it's all said and done, you can take the girl out of the fantasy, but you can't take the fantasy out of the girl!;)

    17. I love looking at the fantasy themed dolls - but I don't really feel drawn to them - to own. The only ones I'd consider are those whose parts interchange w/normal human ones (a lot do, I know). It's the whole cosplay thing, I guess. I want to dress up my dolls in different costumes - like actors or real cosplayers :D

    18. I must see some of these "fantasy" dolls. I can't say I've ever seen one, but I think I could love to have one with wings. I would think normal human dolls are the easiest to manage though, since you don't have to worry about extra details like hooves and horns.

    19. Ahh, I know what you mean! Cosplaying would be awesome for a dollfie, especially if you could match. That makes me want a fantasy dollfie. <3
