Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. yes and no i guess i could say for me.

less fantasy for me and more monsters.

not a big vampire fan or pointy elf ears. nor hooves really.

however squigly and finny ears for fish i do like and anything cool i can use to make into a nice monster type doll. bug apendages or exoskelltons are my faves. claws and talons are delious also. so a little bit fantasy but more darker fantasy i guess.

but i like humans too. and i have several elf eared ones, though all shorter elf ears. and a new one or 2 might get theirs sanded down or off. and i share one vampire doll with car349 but that's an anime character.

    2. I'm actually a fan of both. I love the versitilty of a human form but I love the creativity of fantasy. I love vampires and warewolves the most out of fantasy so I already own a vampire and when I saw Chrom I DIED! lol *shrugs* I guess what attracts me the most is I coul possibly pair an elf woth a human or a human to a warewolf...it's all part of the fun

    3. Random Fact! Bram Stoker described Dracula as having pointed ears:

(Emphasis added by me). Since that was kind of the beginning of "modern" vampire lore, I would guess that's where it came from. In the book, he also had hairy palms! :ablah:

But as far as my answer to the OP goes... yes! I love fantasy sculpts, as long as I enjoy the rest of the sculpt as well. I absolutely love Beryl's hooves, but I also adore her pouty downturned lips and curvy body. I like pointed ears (my boyfriend says I have "the elf-ear sickness"), but I still have to like the face. I won't buy a sculpt just because of the fantasy elements, but it's definitely an appealing factor for me.

That being said, I have a few "normal" human sculpts as well and I love them just as much. My favorite doll Iris has an unusual faceup but is otherwise human. Overall, the fantasy sculpts definitely outnumber the "human" ones in my collection, though.

    4. I like mostly all bjds. The only ones I have a distaste for are the males that look very english and have facial hair. Theres also some molds I don't like, but I think it's fine for another person to like them, I personaly don't like them xD Anyways I love dolls that you can get with elf ears or dolls that are vampires. I think the centaurs are pretty cool, pretty big if you take them somewhere so if I had one it would collect dust from not going anywhere, but they are very nice. The little anthro dolls are adorable and I definatly want one, but first I need to buy my first doll, which I don't know when that'll be but I'm still looking out for dolls that spark my interest and won't take years for me to save up..being im 15 and unemployed doesnt help -sigh- anyways yay for all the other fantasy doll liking peoples!

    5. I LOVE hooves and horns, but I'm not big on other fantasy characters(fangs, paws, elf ears, etc.)^^" But, it really depends on the doll.

    6. On a human or a doll a pointed ear has always attracted me, I like the romantic style fantasy but not the scary fantasy as much personally.

    7. I don't particularly have a thing for elf ears or vampire fangs (I think both tend to be caricatured too much by most companies, and end up looking silly and cartoonish instead of subtle and attractive)

I have fallen hard for Soom's MDs though.

For me, I think it's more about value. BJDs are so very expensive, and I find it quite hard to justify the price, to myself, when they're 'just' dolls.

But when I can point to my Cuprit's hooves or Chrom's wolf feet and say "these were hand-sculpted just for this mold. I'm one of only a few hundred, or maybe a thousand, people to own a doll with these particular parts", I feel it's more... 'worth it', I suppose.

It's a pretty internally consistent system, too - I wasn't nearly as attracted to, say, Topaz as I was to Beryl. And IO didn't spark any connection at all (scar face and a mask... not exactly on par with digitigrade hooves or a fully-jointed scorpion tail).

I'm hoping that all of Soom's elementals are like Cuprit/Chrom - fantasy legs, with extra bits (horns, wings, special hands, etc) - I'm thinking I might try to buy all six of them, and then stop buying BJDs entirely.

Although, if their next MD line is full of hooves and claws and wings, I might not be able to resist :sweat

    8. Well, I seem to only buy fantasy dolls. I never intended to, but they are the sculpts I'm attracted to the most. I do eventually want to get a non-fantasy doll, but for now I'm diggin' elf ears and things of the sort.

    9. for some reason i like my dolls to be more realistic. the most "fantasy"-like thing about my dolls is that sometimes they wear white wigs, or unnatural eye colors.

and i am not a big fan personally of fantasy faceups, either.
i had a white-skinned doll with elf ears, and while he was cool, i had to eventually sell him because he just didnt fit in with the rest of my humanoid crew :P

    10. May I suggest you look for books by Tamora Pierce? I think she writes great fantasy books. Some of the "young adult" fantasy books are much better than the "adult" ones.

    11. In a word, they're not attractive to me. That doesn't mean I'm going to rule out every dollie with fangs or elf ears, but it does mean that I prefer those dolls either without or with their fantasy elements extremely understated. Little fangs and small elf ears that don't really show under a long wig are fine. Great big tusks, or some kind of ginormous ear like the Euclase heads, is just ugh.

I have read my share of "fairy tales" and like it to some degree but not to the point where i want all kinds of dolls with fantasy elements. Soom was very smart to make all those gadgets removable from most of their lovely sculpts - I just want the human version of the doll in most cases, not some kind of crazy hybrid creature.

    12. Yes, I *love* fantasy characters! I can't stop drooling over the Soom MD's :) I also like pretty, victorian dresses, though I prefer fantasy-themed dolls :)

    13. I looked at my doll collection, they are elf ears/fang sculpts, and human sculpts. One of my bjd's is gray, so I like color changes in the resin instead of normal skin.
      Tan would be nice too.
I guess I can say, I like both fantasy and human, as long as the sculpt looks nice.
I would really like a sculpt with centaur hooves or werewolf feet/hands like sooms.
But it's unfortunate that they are monthlies but I like the "limitedness" of it.

    14. I want to thank everyone who is responding to this post. I find your replies interesting and fun. Thanks!

    15. I lean towards human dolls more than fantasy - I mean, some of the fantasy sculpts are stunning but are so...limited? If I have a human sculpted doll, I can make it anything. A person who owns a bakery, someone who works at a coffee shop part time while earning their medical degree, a rebel in search of the ultimate ravioli...With fantasy dolls, their backstories are limited (in my opinion) to strictly fantastical realms. Could you honestly picture a Soom Beryl who worked at a Starbucks?
You could? Well, I can't. Although...the more I think about it, the more fascinating it sounds. XD!

    16. I am a big fantasy geek. I've love fantasy since I first learned of Greek and Roman myths, with their pegasi and nymphs and other strange creatures. As for my dolls, they are all (nearly) based on characters I play in Dungeons and Dragons and (nearly) all based in high fantasy. While I do have humans and I do like human molds, most of my dolls have elf ears or had elf ears added. Soon I'll even have a doll with added tusks! And I finally caved and am getting a Soom monthly with tiny hooves.

That's not to say that I love every fantasy doll out there. I'm not big on the anthros; although I can see their cuteness, I have no desire to own them. And while I love the idea of a 70cm centaur, price-wise he's not really a practicality at the moment. (And what about 60cm female centaurs, people? What I wouldn't give to make a centuar right out of Disney's Fantasia.) I drool over Soom monthlies, but I usually try to convince myself I don't want one (partly for monetary reasons). Then there are some of the elf/vampire molds. Especially the vamps. I love the teeth on some, when their small (mostly wanting to make them into demons or animal people as opposed to vampires), but when they get too big, they're no longer attractive.

Basically, as many have stated, it is the attractiveness of the face mold itself that I am interested in. If there are elf ears, I will give a second look. If it has hooves or wings or any other interesting added detail, I will give a second look. But if the face isn't to my liking, it's just not going to fly with me. There are many "fantasy" dolls I won't ever get because to me, the face is just not attractive. Any mold can have ears added on, but if I can't see my character inhabiting it, I'll just pass it by.

    17. Like many others here, the first thing I am attracted to is the face mold... if that catches my fancy, I can go either way with fantasy v. human. I think my preference would be if the fantasy parts were interchangeable, since I am a newbie & it would be great to be able to switch between characters (ie. removable horns)!

    18. I have always liked the idea of a group of regular dollies, and a few fantasy ones to spice things up. But when it comes down to characters I don't think it really matters to me as long as the look works with that character I have in my head.
However I do think I would lean more towards human looking fantasies. Normal hands and feet. Small pointed ears, maybe small pointed teeth. Something you wouldn't normally notice.

    19. Very much so, as long as they are not elves, vampires, popular style angels or demons. the latter ones are just eeew. just eeew >_<

    20. Well that is pretty rude :| So you don't have a preferance for those types of fantasy creatures (though by labling Angels and Devils as "fantasy" might be stretching it a bit for some people and I think should just be left out of such a discussion), that's fine, but no need to label them in such a crude way and risk offending a huge number of people who DO like those types of things. I admit to not being a huge fan of elves or vampires myself, but I simply leave it at that and don't pick at them. You might see fit to do the same.
