Are "Fantasy" dolls more attractive to you?

Jun 2, 2009

    1. fantasy dolls are more attractive, as they have a more different look den other normal dolls.

and there is more variety too.
i prefer the vampire dolls, and fairies too.
recently i even thought of dragon-based , phoenix-based character on dolls, but so far there is no companies who do on it.

    2. Seeing this topic, I realize that I do prefer fantasy dolls, as all of the dolls I'm on the verge of purchasing has some sort of fantastical feature. I had my eye on a Bobobie Ariel (elf ears) and DZ Yuume for quite some time.
I like the anthros and I absolutely love centaur and other creature based dolls.

    3. Nope. Although I think some of the fantasy dolls are nice, I wouldn't buy one. I prefer the human dolls. Sometimes I put angel wings on them or whatever, but they are still human. But, I'm not really into fantasy stories or anything either, I prefer historical stuff, so that may be part of the reason that I'm not into fantasy dolls so much.

    4. Fantasy dolls I think are fantastic, but I think it would hard to...oh I don't know how to explain it...perhaps make it into your own thing, maybe for example Soom monthly exclusives...they have their own theme and they appear to have their own stories. I would have a difficult time bonding with them. Now if I made a fantasy doll totally customized by me, I would have a better time with it, but people may not feel the same way. I like normal modern dolls better because I think their easier to get along with since we are in a modern time. It's just a feeling you have with them. I wouldn't mind having a fantasy doll, but it would be hard to bond with it.

    5. Personally, I like to dress my dolls in normal, casual clothing. I find "normal" looking dolls more attractive, though, lately I've been getting into hooves and such.
My characters aren't human, and have fantasy powers, but posess no non-humanlike features, unless maybe, odd hair color or strange eye colors, simply because I like how it looks more.
I wouldn't dress my doll in robes and wings and such, because it just seems unessasery in my eyes.

    6. I agree with this very much. =)

    7. I think that fantasy dolls are just as attractive than 'normal looking' dolls.
They are all so pretty, each doll with their special charm, of sorts XD

But I've got to say that Fantasy dolls are one of the things I really like looking at. :D
Must be nice to have hooves/horns/special ears or something like that!

    8. I really appreciate that the fantasy dolls with horns and hooves are very artistic and beautiful and well... I wouldn't call them more 'attractive' than regular dolls... just more unique.

If the elf ears fit the character then that's all good ^_^ if theey don't then I see no reason to add some horns 'just because'

    9. I wouldn't say that I find them "more attractive," so much as they are more interesting. I have always been interested in fantasy creatures, characters and figures, and gravitating towards fantasy dolls just seems natural. It's like physically owning a part of your imagination :)

    10. Fantasy dolls are pretty, don't get me wrong, and I'll probably end up with one.
That said, fantasy dolls take away a lot of possibilities. A centaur is always a centaur, and not likely to be a punk, an elf certainly isn't going to be a Netrunner, and while horns may be metaphorically appropriate for Any Given Character In The Tale Of Genji, it doesn't work. Fantasy dolls can only belong in fantasy setting. Sometimes, that's cool. Sometimes, you want a more options.

    11. That's not necessarily true. It really just depends on what type of fantasy you are writing. Half of the time my fantasy characters are in a very fantasy based storyline with magic and all that froo-froo stuff and I like that. But sometimes I write them in a very modern setting-my hooved creature can go to the movies and hang out at the mall just as easily as his human counterparts, and my cyborg is a punk obsessed with paintguns. And it isn't odd or out of place as at all because that's the world they were created in, a modern world like we live in, just with a few extra creatures tossed in and for the inhabitants of that world seeing these more fantasy creatures around itn's out of the norm. They don't have to be limited to a storyline with forests and taverns and and all that sparkly stuff if you don't want them to.

    12. Nope. ;._. Even though I love fantasy stuff to an extent (I'm a big LOTR fan, and Zelda, etc.) and have always loved the idea of elves (the pretty, ethereal ones - not like.. Christmas elves), I have this issue personally with owning dolls that are not real humans. I love to look at OTHERS' dolls that aren't humans - especially the epic Soom dolls - but they're just not my thing. Hell, most of my dolls are Minimees, which are about as far from fantasy as you can get (depending on what you commissioned, that is ;).)

    13. To me, they are. Now, I LOVE the human dolls and all, but the fantasy ones are just... so out there. And I love that. When I saw Soom Amber, it was instant love and, though she was limited and there's almost no chance of me ever getting one, I know I could easily make her into my own character. Perfectly customized to how I want her, and able to live in a non-fantasy setting. I dunno. Maybe it's just me. Fantasy things fit in with my normal life. XD So I would much prefer a fantasy doll.

    14. I have lots of fantasy characters (that's what being an aspiring writer for 8+ years will do to you, if you're me), so I already have a thing for the fantasy genre. XD I guess I have to agree with you.

    15. I personally really like MAKING fantasy dolls. Mostly, I avoid the fantasy dolls with elf ears and what not. I adore wings, but the elf ears are almost a turn off for me.
However, horns and wings, I'm smitten.
When I make my dolls, I try to add something special to them, and fantasy is always a good choice. Recently, I made a gremlin like head, and I gave him a stout little unicorn horn. I liked that addition, but I can't say that I would spend to buy that from someone else. Personally of course, that's just my opinion.
Perhaps it's because the fantasy dolls are one time changes. The fantasy dolls ca only pull off so many looks.
I like my dolls to be able to change identity if they wanted, or dress up is a better word.
If I wanted them to cosplay, or just wear a different type of clothing that i've sewn. But a lot of fantasy dolls, they wear one thing, and they continue to wear that one thing through their care.

    16. I totally agree. I myself am a huge fan of fantasy, but things like elf ears and hooves aren't what attract me to any particular doll. I don't like a particular doll /because/ it has pointy ears or fangs, and I certainly don't search for dolls with those things. If a 'fantasy' doll appeals to me, it's probably because it has a cute smile or nice face.

Still, fantasy traits can be nice perks sometimes - if they work with the rest of the doll's design.

    17. I LOVE partial anthrodolls, like SOOM's fantasy dolls. But I can't say I'm a hge fan of super-long elf ears.

    18. Au contraire! You're only setting those limitations on yourself! Fantasy critters do not require fantasy froufrou. I have an urban merman who wears his fins out on the subway, & an 8-armed imp who likes to go dancing at rivethead clubs. :D And I'll bet there ARE both an elven Netrunner & a punk centaur out there somewhere.

I was never a fantasy-doll fan at all, but I have somehow found myself with a couple of dolls with otherworldly body parts. They just fit into the same freakshow universe that the rest of my dolls inhabit... All these different sorts of people/creatures from all their different worlds, all living here together in the city. I particularly dig the whole Urban Fae thing-- I like the idea that you could just get on a crosstown bus and sit next to an elf with tattoos, or a merman who's forgotten to retract his fins all the way when he put his legs on, or a girl with perfectly gloss-manicured steel-toed hooves... or what have you. Shopping the bargain-rack at Ross with dangerous tentacled housewives. Dodging gangs of overcaffeinated incubi at Peet's Coffee. Meeting InkyBear's elf boy at the paintball range. ^^ Everyday people!

Anyway - although I love the fantasy dolls that I have, I actually am not normally drawn to them. I usually prefer humanoids. Guess I'm in that camp of "I don't go looking for it, but if it's really cool & it works in my collection, bring it on".

    19. Word. I've got a skateboarding, video-game-junkie, Bawls-chugging pickpocketing elf right alongside my Tolkien-esque elven rogue. Just because it's not 'traditional' fantasy doesn't make it any less MY fantasy.

      Takes all kinds, after all.

    20. I prefer to just own humans, but I must admit some of the hooved dolls are really cool or attractive.

the thing with the humans i want/own, they are dollzone msd sculpts and honestly look, as someone else said, 'otherworldly' compared to many other companies sculpts. some dolls really represent real facial features that people have, and while it can be neat to see photos, that would freak me out to own. So I do consider my humans on a fantasy or rather 'make-believe' level. But no, I'm not into elves and animals.
