Are you hesitant to buy oddly sized/shaped dolls because of clothing?

Mar 14, 2012

    1. I am the kind of person that likes to put the character together relatively quickly. So if I can't find the right clothes for a longer period of time, I just get frustrated - and this can end up in the sale of the doll itself.

Sure, there are always people that can be commissioned (and most of the clothes my dolls are currently wearing are custom made), but many seamstresses have a que of several months while others refuse to deal with dolls they don't have because they can't guarantee the quality and fit (and I completely understand that). This is why I still don't own a Zaoll, although there are more and more clothes for her on the MP, which is great :)

The second issue that makes me think hard is photography. I like it when I can have several dolls in one shot, so I try to choose them accordingly.

    2. Since I am waiting for Dollstown, DollChateau and Cerisedolls msd... I guess that no : odd shaped bodies won't stop me...

But if I am a beginner at sewing, I know I'll always be able to knit something for them...

    3. I would hesitate buying an oddly-shaped doll, unless I'm really (and I mean extremely) keen on its sculpt. Not knowing how to sew is a major obstacle.

    4. If I really, really love the doll, I would buy it, but I do hesitate a little. I can make clothes and shoes, if necessary, but I usually would rather buy something for them to wear before they come home. Being an unusual size sometimes makes this difficult, especially if I already have something in mind for them.

    5. After only owning SD sized dolls for a long time, trying to buy clothes (shoes especially) for my Minifee girls did come as a big shock because I was so used to being able to buy something that would 99.9% of the time fit the doll. Even a couple of items I've had custom made to measure haven't been great fits and since neither of my ladies are into the casual or Lolita styles, I'm really struggling to find them things. I have neither the time nor the interest to learn sewing myself, so that's not an option either.

So, having dealt with that for a not-really-that-odd shaped doll, it probably would put me off buying a really oddly shaped one.

    6. I already own an unusually shaped doll that is rather hard to shop for, so that kind of thing wouldn't hinder me from buying a doll that's not standard size. I'm an awful sewer but there's always ways around that: buying and altering clothes to fit, commissioning clothes, leaving the doll in the nude, etc.

    7. Would you be more hesitant to buy a oddly shaped/size doll because it would be difficult to find clothes?
Only if shoes/wigs/eyes would be a problem, since I make most clothes myself.
Or would you prefer to buy that kind of doll, because its more unique, and you make your own clothes anyway?
When I really like the doll and have a plan for it, then I don't really care for clothing, except shoes/etc. s.a.
Also, besides clothing, would there be any reason you would be hesitant to buy an unusually sized or shaped doll?
I would have to worry about it fitting into my group. Unusual size is a problem, not so much the shape. I can always get away with a good explanation for myself. ^^ But thing is, that I don't like really oddly or unusually shaped dolls.

    8. I think differently shaped dolls are fun! :) However, the problem of finding clothing that'll fit them is a big deciding factor for me. I really like the Leeke art body, for example, but it's such an odd size that I don't think I'll ever get a doll on that body. I really love pear shaped dolls though, so I might end up with a doll with that body shape someday. Hopefully by then they'll have clothes that will fit!

There's also the issue of them fitting in ascetically with my other dolls. I don't usually worry about that too much, but if a character is supposed to be human, I want them to look human next to my other human dolls...if you know what I mean. ;P

    9. yes .__. I can't sew! so when I see a doll that I know it will be hard to get clothing for, I think about it a lot and 99% of the time I refrain from buying it!

    10. No, provided that the size and shape is one that I like. I have two Leeke Mikhailas, and it can be pretty hit and miss with clothes for them, but I loved the sculpt so I went for it. I managed to come up with three oufits (I got both dolls nude and blank) that are cute on them - it just takes more time to build up a wardrobe. It also depends on how different the doll in question is, like for my two pear girls they can easily wear floofy skirts, SD sized panties -- it's just tops that are bit more of a challenge. If it's a doll where nothing is likely to fit, that would be more of a concern. If it's just a matter of mixing and matching items and hunting around a bit, that's really not bad.

    11. I would have to say no.

Aubreigh isn't really "oddly shaped", but her chest and bum are quite large. Which makes it so she doesn't fit in a lot of MSD sized clothes that I've found so far. And she only fits in a few types of SD clothes. So I tend to have to make her clothing. Which also doesn't always fit.

The only time I'd probably think about it would be for fantasy dolls, like mermaids or centaurs. Those I would have to think about partially from the body shape, but also a little bit on what clothes would actually look good with their body style.

    12. A little, but not much. I want an MSD doll from Doll Chateau, which means the body is extremely pear shaped, but I'm sure there's some place out there that has clothes for odd shaped dolls. If not, then I'll learn to make them myself.

    13. Whatever measures, silly ones or not, I'll fake a way for something to fit if I want the doll. So no, nothing deters me from buying an oddly shaped bjd.

    14. I'm not hesitant to BUY the oddly-shaped bodies--I always figure that if I'm really drawn to the doll, I'll find some way to clothe it. But I will admit that I've SOLD some dolls partly because they were just too darn hard to fit/flatter in clothes, even with my best efforts. The other part of the reason, though, was always something different--clothes issues alone aren't my major consideration.

    15. I love odd shaped dolls. But that means that my dolls are usually off topic on DOA. Big heads and extra curvy I love. I have a Leekeworld art body doll. She is MSD in height, SD hips, and Yo-SD chest. Her limbs are MSD size. Her thighs are closer to SD size. So she is hard to find clothes for. I can forget pants, but she is a dress girl anyway. So to answer the question, I would still buy an odd shaped doll even though it might be hard to find clothes. It makes the clothes search more fun I think. I have a Doll Chateau little pear shaped girl coming soon that I know will be hard to dress too and I am interested in their larger dolls also that are extra skinny and look difficult to dress also.
BUT if you are looking to make the doll to resell and make money... I would only make standard size dolls. You would likely get more purchases.

    16. Would you be more hesitant to buy a oddly shaped/size doll because it would be difficult to find clothes?
I used to feel that way--for many years. I bought standard SD and Yo-sized dolls so I could more easily find clothes that fit. I don't have a sewing machine and so I can't sew clothes easily for dolls, so having standard-sized dolls was best. Plus, I really liked certain outfits being made by people and wanted the clothes--so having dolls that fit them was important to me.

However, I have fallen for dolls that were harder to find clothes for. In that case, I only have a few things for them and that is OK. As long as I can get the clothes I like to fit SOME of my dolls, I don't mind that others don't have an extensive wardrobe.

Or would you prefer to buy that kind of doll, because its more unique, and you make your own clothes anyway?
No. I don't care about a doll being "unique." I only care about a doll if I happen to really like it--no matter how rare or how common or whatever--I just have to like that doll! If I like the doll, NOW that I have other dolls to wear fancy outfits, I will go ahead and buy it even if it doesn't wear any kind of easily available outfits. I am willing to make or have someone else make clothes for a hard-to-fit doll. It's definitely NOT a selling point, but it won't stop me from buying a doll.

Also, besides clothing, would there be any reason you would be hesitant to buy an unusually sized or shaped doll?
A big consideration that I USED to have would be if the doll would look good with my other dolls. I used to buy very similar dolls at first so that they would look good together and share clothes, etc. Now that I have that going, I don't care so much about it any more. Now, it is most important that I just really like and want THAT particular doll. If it doesn't go with any of my other dolls, that's OK. I have dolls that go together. I don't need everything to match! :D

But, before, it did matter that a doll would look good with my other dolls--for photos and for clothes-sharing.

Now, I have so many dolls, it doesn't matter!

    17. if anything, I think that that uniqueness adds to the personality and lifelike appearance of the doll. :) people aren't perfect, why should BJDs? I kinda think of it the same way as the modelling industry, I guess.

myself, I'd totally buy an oddly shaped doll. the fact that I'd have to put extra effort into aquiring or making clothes for him/her would make the bonding all the more wonderful. ^_^

    18. Nope. Regardless of size or shape if I like him/her I'll buy 'em,given I have enough money that is.
I'm an okay sewer so if I can't find or commission clothes I'll just make them myself. That and I'm cheap toward doll clothes so I might end up making most of their wardrobe anyway. XD

    19. Yes. It is a big concern for me when buying dolls. They really need to be similair in size and dimension to my others, the main reason is not aesthetics but rather so they can share and interchange their outfits, for the most part. While I can sew, I would rather avoid the hassel of trying to make stuff for an odd-shaped doll and just be able to buy stuff or have the dolls be able to share clothes. I am poor so being able to have my dolls share is very cost effective for me at the moment. This is one of the main reasons that I haven't purchased an iplehouse doll, because the EID I want, even with the model body as opposed to the superhero, they are hard to fit in clothes, even clothes that come from iplehouse.

    20. Would you be more hesitant to buy a oddly shaped/size doll because it would be difficult to find clothes?
My first doll that I bought was an 'odd' size - I didn't know it at the time - and she is a little hard to find clothes for. She's a CH Bisou Ai, they're the same size as the Lati Yellow SP dolls, so you can sometimes find things online, but not always. Its pretty frustrating, because while I like making clothes for my dolls, I also like them to have bought clothes as well.

Also, besides clothing, would there be any reason you would be hesitant to buy an unusually sized or shaped doll?
Wigs are a real pain to find if your doll has an odd sized head. My girls are 4.5 in head size, so halfway between a pukipuki (3-4) and a pukifee (5-6), which makes wig hunting pretty impossible!
