Are you hesitant to buy oddly sized/shaped dolls because of clothing?

Mar 14, 2012

    1. Although I can make clothes I still have purchased ones that i'd like all my dolls to fit. However unquely shaped dolls will offer a one of a kind look, so I remain on the fence about the subject. If I fell in love with one I would buy it for that reason.

    2. I usually do not buy unusually shaped/sized dolls, because then it's hard to find clothing for them, (though I would like to learn how to make doll clothes) and you can't share their clothes with other dolls. :/
But... when I see a doll I REALLY really like, it doesn't matter what size she/he is.

    3. I'm a little hesitant to buy odd sized/shaped dolls, but if it's one I really want I get it anyway! I have a Souldoll Vitto and he's in-between a SD and MSD size, so he's near to impossible to shop for. I've never sewn anything before, but I'm in the process of making him a tank top. He's just too pretty to not buy simply because finding clothes isn't easy. It is frusterating, but I love him.

Also, I just bought an Orientdoll DAE IL and I know he will be a challenge, but he's just too cute! I already bought him an outfit which I think will come close to his size, but time will tell.

I kind of like them being different in stature.

    4. Yes, odd body shapes have affected whether I pursue a doll or not. I know how to knit, but since I don't yet know how to draft patterns my poor doll would most likely be naked for awhile. Too bad too, because I love dolls with pear-shaped bodies.

    5. Non-standard body shapes don't bother me. If the doll was right for me in every other way, then the body shape wouldn't even give me pause. I love to sew for my dolls (obviously, since it's my user name) and half the thrill I get out of each new doll is figuring out how to put fabric on that nekkid little form!

There was an artist making a very stocky mature BJD sculpt awhile back, and I spent way too many boring hours at work doodling clothing ideas for her. Sadly, the doll ended up not getting cast, and I've regretted the loss. And I've also regretted that I didn't grab up one of Kayke Knadle's "Coffee" dolls when I had the chance - that doll has some extreme curves, and would've been a joy to sew for!

    6. I can't sew a single stitch (exaggeration - I once made a lumpy pillow in middle school home ec), so yeah, I balk at uniquely-shaped bodies. :C I'm not proud of it, but it makes me sad to imagine a doll like that just being naked all the time with me.

    7. I didn't buy a couple of dolls because the body was to odd. They looked great but I would never be able to to dress them.

    8. I was at first, then i realised that these dolls are sooo amazing that they could wear a bin bag and still look good :)

    9. I would have to really really fall in love with the sculpt hard before deciding to buy an oddly shaped or unusual scaled doll.

I do make probably about half of the clothes my dolls own, but I also have pretty standard patterns I can use for multiple dolls. I also do like buying things I can't make very well (like jeans, jackets, shoes, formal wear) and if I knew it would be next to impossible to buy anything for the doll, it's unlikely I would buy her.

Also, I like my dolls to fit into groups together. I like all of my SD crew to be part of one story, all of my MSD crew, etc. So a single doll that couldn't really fit anywhere and look right would be out for me most likely. I know if I had a single doll with no friends or family, I'd probably get bored pretty fast and end up selling her off, so the investment wouldn't be worth it to me. Odd shape doesn't matter so much here, because humans do come in all shapes. I wouldn't mind having a chubby doll or very flatchested girl or something along those lines in my crew as long as the scale was right to fit with the others. After all, I do have a Doll Chateau girl!

I'm not saying I absolutely 100% would never even consider a doll of an odd shape/scale, but it's unlikely if it's just too different.

    10. All of my dolls are odd sized, sigh. I've given up on trying to not fall for that body type, but now I just go with it and eventually get them dressed. Thankfully they all are yo or smaller, so making clothes is easier. I actually am having more success since practice and more practice is paying off. Years of practice. :doh

    11. Almost all of my dolls are odd sizes. It doesn't bother me since I make their clothes myself.

    12. I actually learned how to sew through owning odd-shaped dolls. To this day I still love dolls with odd measurements or atypical bodies. Sometimes I get a little glum that I cannot really buy any clothing for the odd dolls and have to make it all, but I feel it's worth it for having the bodies I personally think are really lovely or interesting.

    13. I enjoy sewing and designing my own clothes for my dolls, so an oddly shaped body would actually be more preferable for me!

    14. I'm not at all hesitant to buy odd-shaped dolls from the clothing standpoint. What does give me pause is going above a certain height range--I'm not so crazy about the 70cm+ boys and very tall girls. But odd-shaped dolls? I make most of my own clothes any way, so that doesn't bother me.

    15. I'm not hesitant to buy odd-shaped dolls, They practically taught me to sew. Kind of forced me to which is nice cause sometimes I just need that push. I definitely would say they are not only fun to sew for but there are so many sellers I discovered on craft sites.

    16. I like oddly sized/shaped bodies
I feel it's more realistic! Humans come in all shapes and sizes, so why shouldn't dolls? (:

I intend to make 90% of my dolls clothes anyway, and most of what I dont make will be commissioned specifically with their measurements in mind. So if I have have a doll with a weird shape, I dont think it'll be a problem for me.

    17. Oh don't worry about that. Make the doll anyway. I for one do not mind odd shapes. I make my own doll clothes learning to make shoes for them for the fun of it. I say make the doll I'm sure it will be great.

    18. Since I'm a sewer, I would be able to sew clothes for the doll. So if I enjoy its body aesthetically, then clothes isn't really a concern for me.

    19. I'd love to answer "no" to this question, or rather, my wallet would love for me to answer no. As it is though, I don't pay that close attention to the size beyond whether I find it too big/small for my own comfort. I own 1/6, 1/4 and 1/3 along with some guys that fall in-between those scales and I'm fine with that. As far as non-topic dolls go, there are some that are 1/12 that interest me as well. At the moment my favourite dolls seem to be either 1/6 scale (Limhwa and Xagadolls) or around 50 cm tall (looking at you Merry Doll Round and Souldoll Vitos).

I am learning to sew, so I think part of the reason why I'm drawn to them is because it'll force me to learn it and not just give up :)

    20. Would you be more hesitant to buy a oddly shaped/size doll because it would be difficult to find clothes? Or would you prefer to buy that kind of doll, because its more unique, and you make your own clothes anyway?

Also, besides clothing, would there be any reason you would be hesitant to buy an unusually sized or shaped doll?[/QUOTE]
no not if I liked it. The clothes would be the least factor i would look at, the way I felt about the doll would be the most.
