Are your dolls replaceable?

May 24, 2011

    1. If a doll of mine happened to get destroyed in some way (especially one with an established character), I would try to replace them, but other than that, I would probably not replace any of my dolls. To me a doll's body is replaceable unless there's something special or specific about that body, but a dolls head isn't replaceable. It's their identity, their face. If that's gone then what's left?

    2. Depends on the dolls, some basics with factory faceups are, some are not, like my limiteds and dolls from companies that are out of business, changed sculpts, lost mold licenses, or went downhill and no longer the same quality. Some have faceplates from LE sets which have different faceups than basic, if replaced it would be a different doll, I don't like the basic on those molds so I would probably want a different doll all together instead.

    3. For me, my Justine will never be replaceable. She was the second doll I bought, but since she was second hand while Stormy was straight from factory, Justine was the first doll I ever help in my hands knowing that she was mine forever.

If something were to happen to her, I could never replace her, even if I found the same sculpt and everything.

    4. I own many limited dolls which I still might get second hand, but for such expensive prices, I'd never could pay. But even I'd get the same sculpt later, it won't be the same doll. Limited or not. Not even my Resinsoul Song could be excatly replaced - I'd see every detail and no other Song would be the same I love now.

    5. I feel the same way. Although my dolls are technically replaceable, I couldn't buy the same sculpt and imbue it with the same character as before. It would feel wrong. I also agree that the head holds the character and identity, not the body. If all my dolls were destroyed right now I would attempt to move on and create new characters. They simply couldn't be replaced.

    6. It depends on the doll. I find how I feel about the doll depends on when I bought it.
My older dolls, Llew, Fox, Kit, Denny, Arethusa (a head right now), etc. are not replaceable to me. They have come to represent a certain period of my life to me, and if they were destroyed, I would probably not try to replace them. Because the characters have become so entwined with the dolls and what happens to them,I may let the characters go with the dolls.
Hilary and Hoshang would be difficult to replace because they are very limited, but I would try to replace them if anything happened (especially Hilary). I would replace E.Z. even though he is not a deep character I am highly attached to. He is a ridiculous character I invented for my green lishe on a whim, but he amuses me. I would not even feel the need to get the same kind of doll for E.Z. - I would probably get a junk doll, fix it, and say he had plastic surgery XD I am attached to them in different ways. All the characters carry things from my childhood, but some of the dolls themselves are things I bought alone for myself. I suppose replacing dolls like Hilary would be like replacing the vases I bought as decor for my appartment, whereas replacing Llew or Fox would be like replacing a stuffed animal I have had since I was a child.

Edit: I might use the extra Lupinus head I have to replace Llew. I do not think I would feel the same way about him, but he stays at my parents' house. My mother buys things for him and moves him sometimes- I think when she misses me. I may replace him for her.

    7. For me, the head is irreplaceable. I think that if I really needed to, I could replace the body and feel okay about it, especially since I don't do body blushing. However, if something happened to the head, I wouldn't be able to replace it. It wouldn't be her.

    8. No, I do not think mine are. Just from a technical standpoint, all three are in discontinued colors. And though the characters they have exist separate from the doll, I'm only attached to my particular dolls. Even looking at the exact same molds in other people's pictures, it isn't the same at all.

My Bambicrony Emily twins are a good example to me. They're both in tan, both with a default faceup wearing the same wig, and they're still clearly their own individual selves. The first Emily's skintone is a smooth, darker tone, while Emily #2 has lighter skin and a very pink look to her makeup. So what would Emily #3 be like, even default? She wouldn't be my Emie or Mari.

    9. i would buy the same parts if the ones my doll had broke!!!i get attached to my things and i hate it when the break :(

    10. That's a really hard question. I think if something happened to one of my girls, I might try to replace her straight away since I am actually quite attached to them, but I don't know if I'd end up keeping the same name- or even the same doll- in the end. I guess it's one of those things I'd have to have happen to know what I'd do.

      I really hope that doesn't happen 0_0

    11. I would get new dolls but would not try and recreate a copy of the earlier one

    12. I suppose it would depend on how long I had had said doll and if any mods were done to it. In the case of Dromos,my modded Bobobie Apollo,I don't think I could ever truly replace him. Not only would I have to get the same mold, but I would have to do all his mods again. That's something I could never duplicate and replace,I could and maybe would try,but it wouldn't be the same.

With an unmodded doll I could definitely replace them. It would be a little harder if I'd had them for a decent amount of time, but I could certainly do it. On the other hand,if I'd had the doll for years,I'm not sure if I'd be so ready to replace it. For me,and probably a lot of people, these dolls don't just hold our characters...they also hold the time and memories we've spent with them. They may be inanimate objects but with each picture, activity, achievement,or even mishap that you take and do with them puts a little something extra into the doll that can't be replaced no matter what.

That's just how I see it.

    13. TLDR: They're replaceable to me but I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL BRO ;u;

I thought I replied to this topic a long time ago but it seems my post isn't here. xD For me, my dolls are replaceable. Deidara exists without the doll (I mean the character of course! xD) and so does Souji. Even if their heads are destroyed, so long as the companies are still producing them, I can get a replacement. To me, the photos of them are almost just as important, and in the long run, may be more important than the doll. I only need the doll to continue taking pictures but I get the feeling that someday, I might be out of photos to take (unless I am able to bring them on vacations with me) and plus, the as-realistic-as-you-can-get photos were what I really wanted the dolls for. Not only that, I feel that the photos are where they really come to life. The pictures are taken in scale, in a living environment, and they were there. The dolls are just dolls to me. When I'm home, they sit in their cases. It's not like I take them out and play with them or something. I'm too old and too busy for things like that. (Well, unless they were already all put together and not in pieces I might put one next to me as I study or watch tv.) xD I can see why it's different for everyone though, and that it's not overly sentimental of you (OP). If someone's doll determines the character, of course I think that losing that particular one might also means losing the character. I understand this completely and I'm the same way with a certain something else. But I know there are some like me, where the character determines the doll, and in which case, I would think they're entirely replaceable.

    14. I think I would at least try to replace them. I'm quite attached to the characters so as long as nothing happened to make me want to give them up, I think it would be possible to replace them.

Unfortunately for me, many of my dolls are or soon will be irreplaceable. All of my Luts Delfs are irreplaceable as Delfs, though if Fairyland releases all of the old Delf faces on Fairyland bodies it might be somewhat possible. My Blue Blood boy hasn't sold out yet but it's only a matter of time. And my Model Doll was a limited edition with the glamour bust and is currently sold out. Trying to replace her would be tough.

    15. Sorry for the caps and off topic but:

OMG SHIORI_HIME YOU ARE ONE WITH THE FIREWORKS KANZASHI I LOVE SO MUCH. /shot It is absolutely my favorite and most beautiful kanzashi I have ever seen and I hope to one day commission one like that. xD

    16. Most of mine are replaceable. Some would be expensive and hard to find. But replaceable.
      Except Ducky.
I got her during one of the worst times of my life. In fact, I sold 3 dolls just to buy her (she was so expensive!) But really, she brought me a lot of joy.
When she had to be repainted, it about killed me. But over time, I got used to her new look.

If she were stolen or damaged beyond repair...it just wouldn't be the same with another doll.

    17. I could probably replace them, I've never been all that sentimental when it comes to... well, anything, really. Might change my mind when I've had them for a while, I suppose, but... guess I'll get back to you if that happens...

    18. I haven't had my doll long enough to decide. I'm going to say no, I wouldn't get the same thing. Even if you do, there are minor details such as in the face up and scuffs, etc. from having the doll in your life that would have made that character unique.

    19. In terms of availablity and pure physical value, all of mine are replaceable. Some would be harder to replace than others, but it could be done. In terms of sentimental value, however, every single one of my crew is irreplaceable. If anything happened to one of them, I could physically replace the doll, but I don't know if I would want to. A new doll would just not be the same to me.

    20. I would probably buy the same sculpt again but I would create a new character for the doll. I could't replace them just like that.
