1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD Orbyrarium Discussion Thread

Apr 25, 2006

    1. My card has been charge and cleared, and I have no book either! My number is 1689.

    2. My order was #786, and I live in Virginia, so that's why I don't understand why I haven't received the book yet. Many of the people around my area on the East Coast have already received their books.

    3. mine was 900 something with an 8 in there too...or maybe it was a 2...can't remember....

looks like they're filling orders out in order....so it may be a while?

    4. Everyone seems to be discussing this in the news thread, so I thought I'd bump this up and say that I got mine. Wow! What an amazingly beautiful treasure it is! I'm sorry to hear that so many arrived damaged though. Mine was a bit folded, but otherwise okay. It's a tough call about packaging. This really was an great deal for $24.95 -- to be honest, I don't know how they did it for so little -- so I can see why they might not have been able to ship them with more packaging. However, in the future, I imagine that all of us would be willing to pay a bit more just to have a piece of stiff cardboard and a "Do not bend" sticker included.

Still, well done, everyone, who worked on this project! I am so impressed and looking forward to spending many hours with this great book! :)

    5. I ordered my book last week and it came today! I was rather surprised to see it as I thought I'd get it much later since I ordered so late.

    6. I have had mine for several days now...and I go back and look at it every night. so cool.

    7. I'm 1493 and haven't recieved.. i think i've had payment taken though
what would it appear as on your statement?

    8. You can add me to the list of people whose books arrived bent up. Got mine last Saturday and it was disappointing to have it messed up...I've got it pressed under a bunch of heavy books to try to flatten it out.

    9. But doesn't this, in a sense, show a fundamental misunderstanding of how most of us "use" our dolls? I'm confused about who those outfits and items were designed to please. It seems to me like they were more targeted towards a traditional doll collector than to the typical BJD owner, who likes to take her dolls out and get 'em a bit dirty. Not that that's EVERYONE, mind you, but it's certainly more of us that not.

And mine was ripped, too, just a little bit. Since so many of them were ripped in similar places, I'm wondering if the fault isn't with the originating post office. Perhaps Karen can get in there and do some serious talking to the HD branch; between the mail going out so slowly to regular subscribers and all these books being bent and torn, I think she has a case for grievance.

(Edited to take out something I'd already posted in this thread!)

    10. You have to remember - the HauteDoll magazine as a whole is targeted more towards "traditional" collectors. I would imagine they'd try to pick up some of the collectors with the book, too.

Also, from what I know about Fancyboots, she doesn't seem like the type of person to "go out and get 'em a bit dirty" on a whim. The paper wig is part of an overall effect, to complete the doll's ensemble. She was designed with a specific look in mind - from outfit to wig - in order to fulfill the artist's vision. Knowing that people would still complain about the lack of "heavyduty play wig", she also opted to include one of those, too.

Personally, I think it looks fantastic for what I love to do most with my dolls - photography. I know that I don't spend every moment of every day touching and moving my dolls. Photographing them a lot? Yes. Displaying them when not photographing? Certainly. I leave them sitting posed around my house all the time. Seems like a perfect opportunity to dress them up a little to me. Plus, imagine the fun "period" stages you could set up for a photo shoot.

Given all that, I'm not sure what the big deal is - that it's made of paper, like a museum display, for authenticity? It doesn't seem much less delicate than the fancy wigs a company like Volks includes with their "kimono" dolls; I sure wouldn't trounce around in a muddy field with an updo wig like that, either.

If anyone seriously has a problem with a paper wig - and is actually ordering the poor doll! - then just put the wig in a box to keep it nice and switch it out for a different wig for everyday wear. It's not like people aren't going to do that anyway. I'm not sure why this is such a point of contention. Don't like it, don't buy it. =o_O=

    11. Oh, no, I don't have a "problem" with the outfit. I just wish the book had been targeted more to the current BJD audience than to an audience that I don't have much in common with. It's a selfish wish, and I don't begrudge their choice a bit; I'm sure it was made for good business reasons.

    12. Well - what would have made it more on-target for the current BJD audience? I haven't received my book yet (although apparently one of my photos of Jocelyn made it in for publishing! <3), so what I know of it is only what I can see online, which basically means what's available from the boutique.

School of Vambane outfits from DollHeart are usually easy sells because of DollHeart's stylish designs and high quality. Mio outfits are always popular and as far as I know, well worth the price. Chesca? Her outfits are expensive, but an auctioned version would probably have easily cost twice the price. Not much of a comfort, I know, but it's still the reality if you're looking for well-known designers. Liebchen doesn't fit into my doll plans, unfortunately, but her style is beautiful and I love what Fancyboots did with her design. The only set I'm confused about myself is the "Ted Menten" set - mostly because I don't know the designer and don't own an MSD and thus don't care much about the outfit.

Most of it seems like it would hold a wide appeal, if it's a little "upscale" in terms of price. If people don't like the stuff available in the boutique, definitely speak up about it. Don't just bash it, though, explain what you would have liked to see. There's always time in the future to develop something that will appeal to a wider audience.

Same for the book; like I already said, I haven't gotten my copy yet and so can't say anything solid about its contents. In general, though - faceup tutorials, while fascinating, don't appeal to me because I have no artistic skills anyway. Photography tips are always welcome, because I still need to improve in that area. Info about the different companies seems like a major, major bonus to me, just so I don't have to keep all that data stored up in my head. As far as the inclusion of manga or photo stories... I just don't know how well that kind of stuff translates. It's something I'll have to see, I guess. My thoughts on this may differ once I actually have the book in my hands.

Anyway, what goes for the boutique goes for the book itself too; what would be better for inclusion? Aimee has a post asking for ideas on future HauteDoll articles; what doesn't get published in the magazine may end up in a new book instead. But the ideas still need to be presented instead of sitting back and complaining when the material isn't what you wanted but never took the time to suggest. I'm sure the contributors would be more than willing to accept suggestions so they can make their next endeavour more successful.

If the book and boutique aren't targeting their intended audience, then let the audience give some accurate coordinates so that the targeting is better in the future.

    13. No need to get snarky, Valentine. I have suggested articles to Aimee in the past, more than once. They were turned down as being possibly too "political," and I respected her desire to stick to one type of writing and not to another; she doesn't owe me, nor does she need to do what I ask. You're absolutely right that I could write my own articles, but I feel so very different in interest, lifestyle, and aesthetic from the people who contributed to that book that I'm not sure I'd be a helpful part of their team. I respect the cohesiveness they have and what they're trying to do, even if they didn't make the same choices I would make. Perhaps someday I will put my own book together. :)

I liked the book, overall. My issues with it were made pretty clear in my review.

By the way, didn't I read somewhere that you were leaving the fandom?

    14. i got mine - omg i have a LINE CREDIT in the jewelry section oh SQUEE! thanks to angelificatus...

      so so so cool!! omg!!!!

they shoulda used Memphis for the kawainino pic though. :D (i'm just kidding)

well maybe only by half. ROFL

    15. I'm sorry if you misinterpreted my post - nowhere in my post did I mention that I was speaking only to you. If I wanted to do that, I could easily have sent you, Darkwood, a PM instead. What I posted was something I said for everyone, myself included, with "you" as a general statement. It just happened to come as a thought in response to what was posted before me.

Good luck with that. I'd be interested to see what you come up with.

What I do with my time is not your business, nor is it the business of any forum - Den of Angels or otherwise. Again, I'm not quite sure why you've chosen to bring this up in a public setting, but we can continue it privately if you wish. Feel free to PM me.

      Congrats. XD~ <3

    16. My (admittedly snarky) point was that (as I read your post) you were making assumptions about who I am and what I contribute/have contributed...and therefore, in return, I can make assumptions about why you're bothering to be snarky about a fandom that you theoretically weren't a part of any longer. It's not particularly nice on either front. ;) You're right that it isn't any of my business, although your photographs were some of those that first got me interested in the hobby, so I'd hate to see you disappear for sentimental reasons.

I apologize for taking personally what I ought not to have taken personally--I have a tendency to do that, especially when I don't get enough sleep. However, when you quote someone and then comment, it does seem pointed, whether you meant it to or not.

And sher, I saw your credit! I was excited for you!

    17. Can I interupt and ask will this book be in English if I order it from an Ebay seller?

    18. The BJD Orbyrarium is in English as it was made in the US for doll collectors. :)

    19. seeing as the people who made this book are, for the most part, members of DoA and part of the "most of us"... I don't think that the people who made the book are fundamentally different, or misunderstanding the current BJD audience, since they themselves are also the current audience. But everyone likes different things, so in a book that is only so long, you can't possibly make everything please everyone. That being said, I think that there is a ton of stuff crammed in that book, the result being that I think most people can find at least several things that are very worth it to them.

really though, if contributers had ONLY made something that was worthy of getting "dirty", people would complain about how the outfit or wig was "too simple"!

specifically talking about the paper wig, it is something beautiful and artful. I don't consider myself to be a "traditional doll collector" with that sort of negative tone that is being implied... I'm not "too careful". I'm about the same as any other "current" BJD fangirl....but I think the fancyboots paper wig is a wonderful thing. I play with my dolls all the time, I don't keep them in glass cases, I take them outside with me without a qualm. I put my dolls in wet leaves and let them get pollen on their clothes.

And yet, I do have a couple wigs or items that I have to be more careful with. What is derogatory about having a few delicate and precious items as well as more rough and tumble ones? If one is worried about messing it up in play, you simply take it off and put it away and put another wig on when you're not using that one. Isn't that the beauty of our hobby? that you can change wigs and looks so easily?

and really, if someone wants to put their doll in a case and never take it out, what is wrong with that? it's their doll! and these dolls are so versatile, why say one way is the only or right way? Anyway, I digress...

... it's my opinion that HD, and the Orb book are meant for "traditional" and "modern" BJD collectors. There's a little bit of something for everyone.
