1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD Orbyrarium Discussion Thread

Apr 25, 2006

    1. FYI: This book may also available at any shop that carries Haute Doll. MFD.net in Ontario has it in stock, so it doesn't hurt to check your local doll and book shops for the Orbyrarium.

    2. I don't think it's sold in local stores, but several online shops are selling it.

    3. Mine just found me! (I moved and it was forwarded.)
Wow! Even with all the nice comments, I wasn't prepared for how awesome this book is!
So many giant color photos, so many interviews, and so many tutorials!
I've never seen a doll book this nice unless it was from Japan!
      Great job, guys!
(Oh, and for those complaining about the shipping costs - typically, these include more than actual postage for a business. You have to pay someone to stuff the books into envelopes and address them, for instance. And possibly mailroom overhead, too.)

    4. I got mine yesterday. It's a great book BUT .... I've found a mistake in it.... on page 12, the photo for Angelregion .... it's a photo of an unoa, not an angelregion doll. Or maybe I'm a bit blind.
Except that, it's a really great and useful book.

    5. Yeah, I noticed that too. I was like :? , that's not an AR!

    6. I think I am just not fated to get my book at all :(

    7. Same here! I emailed HauteDoll last week and they told me it was shipped on the 17th. I still haven't gotten it, so I'm assuming it got lost in the mail. :-(

I just emailed them about getting a replacement.

    8. I feel a little sad the Don's dolls, (bishonen house ) weren't mentioned. I thought his was the first company in the US to make BJD's. Not that Fancyboots arent wonderful as well.

    9. I just got mine yesterday. This is indeed an awesome book. I don't think I got the one with the Hound patterns but it's an awesome book nonetheless.

    10. Don't worry about Donn, he was in Dolluiex and I'm sure he'll end up in another magazine!

His dolls are very unique, big TALL boys.

    11. D: arr~ It's been four weeks since the dispatch date of my book and still I haven't gotten it. Emailed them yesterday and hopefully they'll reply me asap about a replacement. :(

    12. I just got my copy today, and WOW is it ever gorgeous!! Those of you who are still waiting for yours will not be disappointed. :)

    13. Yay~ Hautedoll replied me and will be ordering a replacement to be sent. ;-; I am crossing my fingers and hoping this time the book will certainly reach me safely. I want to read it!! *grabby hands*

    14. They told me to wait another week last week. If I don't see it around this week (aka week 5), I will ask for a replacement =.=

    15. sorry if my questions was already posted and answered by someone else. the thread is so long (and i'm so lazy) to check on every single post. i'm very sorry for that.

as a "BJD Idiot", may some more experienced doll owners give a brief introduction on this book to me? i've stupid questions like if it is a book or a megazine? what is it about? how to place preorder? if it is a megazine, can i order it every issue? etc etc.

again, please accept my sincere apology if these questions are either too stupid or have been answered before.

      thanks everyone in advance!

    16. haha, the Orbyrarium is a lot like the Japanese "mooks." It is soft cover, yes, but it has an intriguing printed clear plastic cover on top. It is a heavy book, weighing probably around a pound or so. The paper used was high quality and the images are exquisite.

The Orbyrarium offers a variety of different interviews and tutorials. One thing that I thought was particularly nice was the fact that body blushing tutorials covered both airbrush and manual (q-tip, paint brush, whatever) application. If you purchase this book, you will have an excellent resource with information about some of the most popular companies, artists, and sculpts as well as useful information on stringing, blushing, painting (including manicures!), and dressing Asian resin ball jointed dolls.

Interest in Abjd's has grown exponentially since they emerged on the scene less then a decade ago. It would be next to impossible to include everybody and everything that each of us believes should be in such a book. Given this understanding, HD has done an extraordinary job with this first resource guide, and should be commended.

Aimee, having read every last comment on here, I have a suggestion for binding. Mind you, it may not be a feasible suggestion, but I do know how binding a book can add to its production costs. One or two people have commented on the glue coming "unstuck," another has suggested pull out patterns. Perhaps it would be possible to publish a book within a loose-leaf binder format ... a small binder that opens flat, with three-hole-punched pages that can be removed for photocopying.

I took my Orbyrarium, which had only arrived two days previous, to the NYC Tea Party with me, where quite a few folks ooh'ed and aah'ed over it. I wish HD every success with this book ... and hope that there will be others!

Huge kudos and thanks to everybody who has been involved in this labor of love.

    17. It is a book.
It can be purchased through Haute Doll (and some other online retailers).
      http://www.hautedoll.com/shopping.php?id=13

It's kind of a resource reference book. It has tutorials on faceups, blushing, sewing, set accessory building, an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of current companies, as well as interviews, a short comic, and some exclusive outfits for sale.

    18. thank you for your kind reply, frzndaqiri and Julie M. that helps a lot. can't say enough thanks. (it's co lucky that i've pre-ordered the book, i don't think the local bookstore will be carrying it).

    19. i was wondering if all the people who ordered (or pre-ordered) the book -especially europeans- have received their copy because i haven't.
i contacted them and they told me mine was shipped on July 14 and it's already the 21st of Aug. so i'm getting a little impatient now. :...(

also, does anyone of you know what their refund policy is? i'm asking because if i dont receive my book by the end of the month i'm definitely gonna ask for a full refund. :barf

    20. Hi deliolith,

I'm in the US and I haven't recieved mine yet. :( I emailed them about 2 weeks ago and I was told mine had been shipped on July 17th. Then i waited another week and emailed them agian, because it still hadn't shown up, and they said they were putting another one in the mail that day. That was the 11th of this month- still nothing. :| I'm beginning to think I'm not meant to get this book! I was debating ordering it from eBay because people were saying they got theirs from eBay within a week, but I'm a little hesitant to try that at this point. If this second copy doesnt make it to me, I'm just going to ask for a refund. :(
