1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD Orbyrarium Discussion Thread

Apr 25, 2006

    1. I think that most of the patterns included are already MSD sized but with a little copier resizing they can be adapted easily.

    2. Thanks much, Siar! :)

    3. The only vaguely MSD-sized pattern that I can recall was the Unoa mini-skirt. I did resize the Softly She Walks SD13 pattern for MSD, though.

    4. recieved my copy a while ago... anywho i thought it was very lovely, but i would like to see a higher quality cover and more selection when it comes to shipping options. the tutorials were great and if i could sew the patterns would be of help as well. :) also, is it just me or did it seem like there were more female dolls featured? i am definately biased towards the boys so maybe that was just my imagination...

    5. wow! I am surprised and a little disgusted to hear such complaints about the shipping costs!!! Has no one here bought off ebay? (i regularly see auctions there where the shipping is as much or more than the items.) Its not as if a friend or fellow DoAer was sending you a little something. This is a business. While those who received damaged copies had every right to be upset, that should have been taken up with Haute Doll, not posted here(with slavering excessiveness). I came to this thread to read about the book, not to 'virtually' walk into what felt like a grafittied copy of the book. Complaints left and right, my goodness.

      While it sounds like the content is quality, it also sounds like the materials used to produce the book were a little cheap. What DO you expect? As a first book, no major publishing house (who would use better materials) is going to produce a book like this until a proven market exists and clamors for it. America and most of its products are done in a rush and as cheap as possible. Thats why Im glad our dolls are (mostly) made in other countried where quality and detail are important. Thats also why Im glad there ARENT more american BJD makers. Once BJDs are americanized, they will become thin, cheap imitations of the dolls we love so much. Just be glad there are some people in this country that care about our hobby!

      ::spits::

      sorry, if i seem mad, but i AM. Alot of work went into this book and very few people are commenting about the actual CONTENT of the book. Besides, even if the book is made somewhat cheaply, if this edition does well, they may well be able to afford better materials. Id personally LOVE to see it in hardback.

      As for availability, it's currently up on Ebay for several prices and it is NOT on any major book sites, yet; tho it should be.

      congrats to aimee, karen and everyone even remotely involved in this book. It is beautiful, informative and maybe if there are more books like this on the market, less people will look at us crazy when we take our dolls out. ;)

      p.s. no offense AT ALL intended to the *current* american BJD makers; I heart Bishonen House boys!!! I meant a large scale american company like mattel making them.

    6. What people were upset by was paying $5 for shipping,and having the items show up with a postage stamp of $2.xx and damaged. ^^;; I don't think there was anyone that said the shipping charge itself was outrageous, just that for the cost, it would have been nice to have the books packaged a little more securely.

      I personally loved the book and hope they make another one. ^^;;

    7. Exactly Silver619 ! and for the international we paid more than $10 for a priority airmail and we finally got it shipped economy....
      I don't mind paying the right price for shipping (never did) but I except to have the priority shipping when I paid for it !
      This doesn't change the quality of the book which is amazing ! ;)

    8. I commented excessively on the book's content earlier in the thread, but I'd like to say that I don't find negative comments problematic. This is a board for sharing information; it's important that we know which vendors deliver high quality products and which deal with customers well--and which don't.

      Personally, I had no problems with HD or with the book itself, which IMHO was beautiful and high quality (if a little under-edited). I've enjoyed my copy. But I am grateful for all the people who rallied and let HD know that they were unhappy with the service so that when I order the next BJD book from them--and I hope there will be one--I'm unlikely to get something that's poorly packaged or shipped.

    9. I disagree as this first statement is a generalization and one that is unwarranted. Also, the entrepreneurial spirit combined with creativity, be it Asian, American or of/from any other culture is what brought us ball-jointed dolls in the first place. Even before ABJD, there existed the French and German bébés and the ABJD respresents the rebirth of these original ball-jointed dolls. A renaissance is always a good thing!

      Cheers!

    10. I have to say, that after repeatly asking people to bring up shipping issues with Haute Doll instead of posting about it here, I'm frustrated and made sad by this thread.
      After MANY people posted about the shipping issue, I really don't see how adding another 5 identical posts is helping anyone at all.

      It would be nice if people would talk about the CONTENT, instead of allowing a shipping issue to overshadow the book itself, which to me, seems ridiculous.

      This book took a very long time to make and a HUGE amount of sacrifice and effort on the parts of the people who worked on it. Regardless of whether I worked on the book or not, I would be proud of this book. It has a lot of information, tutorials and interviews with very talented people; and nothing like this has been done in English ever.
      This is not to say that the book is perfect or that its above critique or anything of the sort, it's just it gets very discouraging to wade through pages of shipping issue posts, and very few about the content of the book, which is the important thing.

      and once again, if the book sells well, then there would be a good possibility of getting another book done (a book that would of course have improvements over the already great book that has already been published.)
      I know that it sounds like I'm biased, or bragging, or whatever, but this really is a great book.

      *_*

    11. I must say as a new bjd enthusiast and a relative noob to DOA, I read this whole thread and I'm not put off of buying the Orbyrarium at all! Yes, there were a lot of individual complaints about the shipping. Even so, I get the overall impression that the book is lovely and that almost all of those who bought it are pleased with their purchase. I understand what it's like to put something out for public consumption only to feel that people are overly critical or nitpicky. That said, I truly didn't see any mean-spirited critiques here. In all honesty, as a newcomer to bjd fandom I am a little surprised at how upset folks are getting over what appears to be a pretty warm reception for the first US bjd book! :sweat Whenever any kind of a book gets published there are going to be criticisms. That doesn't mean that people aren't appreciative of all the effort put in!:aheartbea

    12. Sorry Aimee that you take this comments badly. It wasn't the aim. But you're right I should have report it to Haute Doll and not here, but well.... missa fault ! (mea culpa).

      I want you (and all the ones who participated) to know that IMO this book is great ! It's so good to have a book about ABJD that I can truly understand (japanese is really not an easy language !). I know how difficult it is to do a book, and I can estimate the amount of sacrifices, efforts, and bad sleeping you all must have had.

      There is some mistakes, but eh ? ! Which book doens't have in a first release ? ! ;)
      The articles are great, informative, interesting and fun, the pics are...... amazing !!!! the tutorials ...impressive and soooooooo appreciated ! Really you did a more-than-great work ! ( Sorry I have not enought vocabulary sometimes !).
      I do hope there will be another one in a next future. I'll buy it for sure !
      * hugs and kisses*

    13. I ordered mine on wed. and am patiently waiting for it to arrive.

    14. I suspect I will be getting one for my birthday this week. I am so excited! I think it will help tide me over until I order my doll on the 10th of December.

      Aimee, I will give a content based comment after I read my book. I can't wait to see what is inside! I will be doing lots of projects for my new doll so this will be exciting! Keep your chin up and make us another book! ;)

    15. I have just ordered mine too, and will post again when I've read it...:)

    16. I got mine, and, being somewhat of a newbie, didn't really notice anything wrong until people posted about it. :? I thought it was very well done for a first print. Yeah, some things may need work but its nothing that needs to be pointed out to death. I hope to eventually publish my own book (not BJD related) and know that I would feel really bad if a lot of what i'd hear were bad things. At this point, they Do get it that people are not pleased and they will work on it. I really love my copy, though. I found the tutorials very interesting and got to know more about some people and companies I really admire. It definetly made the artists seem more aproachable. I especially loved seeing Anu's work station. It's so cool because you can see how she works and think That looks like mine!!! So, thanks!! I can't wait for the next one!!!:fangirl:

    17. The one thing I was in awe of, was the quality of the paper, and the information that the book had. I, for one, was expecting the 'same old same old,' but found many things I enjoyed inside. However, the Danjo Girls were not one of them....I want to see photos of those dolls so badly!!

      I do think the book is a wonderful guide for the new person, yet has alot of information for the people who've loved the dolls for years.

      Somehow, I didn't notice the shipping charges....or maybe more to the point...when I got the book, that seems trivial. I love it!

    18. thanks for posting you guys! _really appreciated!_

      angeltari- Anu really gave a lot of information and photos to me for that article, I just about died when I got the emails from her, so full of cool photos! So I'm glad that other people enjoyed seeing them too.

    19. I have a question about the tutorials.... Is there any on body blushing? You can see that I am waiting alittle impacentaly for this baby to get here. LOL

      Nicole

    20. Yes there are 2, one with pastels one with airbrush.
