1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD Orbyrarium Discussion Thread

Apr 25, 2006

    1. Hi Nicole,

Have you tried your local Staples or Office Depot or any other office supply store. It seems to me it is the same product as used to produce display boards.
You might also be able to order it through their catalogs if they do not have it in the store.

    2. I hope some people try to make those room peices and post them! I love that stuff!

    3. I've tried staples and they said the don't seel it that thick. *SIGH* I will have to look at their on line catalogue.

I want to use it to make a doll trunk. I will post as soon as I find some of it and the trunk is finished.

      Thanks

      Nicole :)

    4. I used the same stuff to make Danu's house; it just doesn't have side walls because I can't photograph from as many angles. It's foamboard. They'll have it at any local craft store: AC Moore, Michael's, etc. They might also have it at gaming/hobby stores near you (that carry Warhammer and RP miniatures,) as people use it all the time to make movement mats for miniature games.

    5. I got my copy about 3 weeks ago. I have not put it down yet. I must have read throught it 2 times allready. I take it with me every where. It's a great book to show people what bjd's are all about if they never seen are heard of one. It will come in haddy when im ready to try my first face ups. clothes ect.

When i did get my book it started too fall apart. the cover is coming off the pages. Poor Binnding. I tryed to glue it back togather. It was not dammage in the mail.

Has any one else had a problem with the cover coming off????

    6. My book has a very secure cover... I left it in the living room and curious family members has a flick through :P Now they know my secret.

My mum is dolly-phobic but she totally loved the book, she loved how she wasn't scared of the dolls and how full of emotion they seemed. She's adamant that they MUST have been based on real people :P My older brother brings the book to me now and again saying "I like this one..."

I hope another one gets made XD Cos I can get people hooked this way...

Not sure about the silver on the cover, it obscures the lovely illustration in my opinion :/

    7. This book can get you in trouble, because you want so many dolls. :)

I so wanted the HD Liebchen, but I waited until I paid my bills off and she sold out the day my cc payment cleared. :ablah:

I wanted to get to the doll pics fast, but I got into the photo story.

Please let them make another one !

    8. I got my copy a week after christmas and it is amazing!

The binding of the pages isn't too great though - too much reading and it will come undone I think, but for now, it is my Bible!

    9. Any word on an ISBN number yet?:?
It would probably be on the inside or back of the cover, does anyone know what it is???
(There's a nearby store that can order most books in without charging a shipping fee to the customer, but they need the ISBN number)

      Thanks for any help!;)

    10. I've just checked my copy of the Orbyrarium and there is definitely no ISBN number listed on it. I'm a librarian, I've checked all the usual places. I suspect that they didn't register for an ISBN.

Sorry I can't be more help.

    11. It probably doesn't have one. Applying for an ISBN number is costly, and it isn't worth it when you have a central clearinghouse like DoA for most fans--they'll sell plenty of copies here without going the ISBN route.

    12. Thank you Bootsy and Darkwood, I appreciate the info!

    13. Foamcore is a different product than Foamboard. Whether or not it can be used interchangeably in this project, I don't know. But according to this thread, some are substituting with foamboard and liking the results.

3/16 foamboard is pretty easy to find in craftstores/office supply/...even at Walmart. But, the 1/2" thickness gets tricky to find, at least in some areas of the country!

Where I live, a single sheet of 1/2" FOAMCORE would be impossible to find in a store. It is available online but most places will only sell it in bulk (10 sheets) to prevent it from being damaged during shipping. Unfortunately, 10 sheets gets pricey. (dickblick.com, cheapjoes.com, artsupply.com)

Maybe we need to hear from more that have tried this project using 3/16 foam'board' material. If it is working fine.....then SUPER!!

    14. I have decided to make a diarama (SP) with the 3/16" foamcore. First I have to find a table to put it on and then I will start the construction. I promise to let you all know how it turns out.

    15. Hi there.....

I was wondering on the MIO skirt pattern how am I supposed to sew on the back pockets?

      Thanks

      Nicole :)

    16. Sure hope I'm posting in the right spot. .eh heh.. :?

As the title questions, is the book BJD Orbyrarium: An Angel's Guide to the Universe of Modern Ball Jointed Dolls very useful? I've been trying to find some published material on how to do face-ups, wigs and clothing, also just general ways to re-string your doll. So far, this is the only book I've come across that was in English.

So for anyone who may own it, it is worth the $24/30(after S&H)? Is it simple to understand for beginning doll owners or is it geared more towards someone who is already considered advanced in these subjects?

And would anyone know of some other books that are in English that are worth taking a look at? I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!

    17. It was fairly informative for the new consumer. There were a few grammatical mistakes and some of the articles were a little hard to read, but the tutorials were fantastic!

I'de say it would be worth it if you wanted to learn more about the hobby and faceups, but for me it wasn't too informative, because most of the stuff I already knew XDDD But its still got lovely photos.

    18. Thank you so much letting me know, dechanique!
I guess I'll put the money down to get it since I'm still such a newbie at all of this. :sweat

    19. I agree that it is very informative for the newcomer. Some the company information is misleading and innaccurate and it's already quite out of date, but it's a nice place to start!

The photos are beautiful! I love the face-up demos given by Satoko Ono and Rachel Graves (Evenstar) and the stringing tutorial is dead easy to follow.

It's worth the money just to have the book on your shelf. While there is room for improvement if they make another book, it's a fine first showing.

    20. someone has told me that it's volks biased, is this true? i was thinking about getting the book, but i would like to see a variety of dolls and companies. :)
