1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD Orbyrarium Discussion Thread

Apr 25, 2006

    1. you can still get them for Haute doll and they also sell copies on eBay still

    2. I bought it because I was mostly interested in seeing the clothing and patterns, but the face-up tutorial gave me the courage to order a Shiwoo with no makeup - I will do it myself :)

    3. I thought it was a wonderful book, both just for lovely pictures, but also patterns and tutorials. But I'll read anything with BJDs in it LOL.

    4. Got it for my birthday last year (December, so I've had it for about 2-3 months.) It's a very pretty book with lots of info for newbies (like myself) and it has some great photos, tutorials, articles, and patterns. However, the only thing I think the book really needed, was to have just some basic patterns. By basic I mean, like a pair of pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a T-shirt, underwear maybe, and (although it's not basic) since almost everyone wants one for their doll, maybe even a kimono pattern (of course, that has not been perfected yet, as far as I know.) You know, just something simple a person could try and make for their first doll (or new doll) so it won't be naked. I could have seriously used that, because I was expecting a doll at the time.

I have to agree and say that there is a lot of Unoa in it, which is still cool, because Unoa is one of my dream dolls and they are wonderful. I loved the tutorial on how to make the Unoa skirt especially. But Unoa are not in the majority, so I think patterns that would fit CP boys or MSD sized dolls would be good, because most people have them. Nothing elaborate, only basic stuff. And patterns that could be used for any type of doll would be great (like a pattern that would fit a Volks SD13 boy and a CP boy). Other than that, I think it's worth the money and everyone should have one. :)

Maybe in the future, there should be more of a BJD survival guide, a book that tells you how care for your doll and things of that nature, things that every doll owner needs to know.

But yeah, The BJD Orbyrarium is great. :D

    5. Thanks, I'm watching the book right now for when I get some spare cash.

Looks like it'll be a good read.

    6. If you're not a very experienced seamstress, don't buy it just for the Mio skirt pattern. It's difficult to understand unless you (or a friend, in my case) have quite a bit of experience.

    7. Chiming in to say "Thank You" for info on this book too. I came across it on Ebay and wondered if it was a worthwhile resource.

    8. Like Unoa_ImaFreak, when I got this book it made me go on a crazed mission to get a U-noa, which eventually happened. So that made the book totally worth it for me. Well, that and the Mio skirt pattern. I agree it is definitely NOT a pattern for a new seamstress, it looks really tough. Props to Mio. I finally scanned and enlarged the pattern this week and cut out and pinned the pieces. I am going to christen my new sewing machine with a mio cargo skirt for Stevie! I'll let you know how it turns out!

    9. Good luck on the skirt! I pre-ordered this book from Haute doll when it first came out. It's worth it's weight in gold if you need the basics. When I first fell in love with these dolls it was mostly trial and error. It's nice to have a book that can give you a jump start in the right direction.

I am by no means a seamstress, and these patterns look tough! Although I've thought about getting some fabric and making some stockings from the stocking pattern in the book. (I do quilt, so I have a machine, it's clothes that I don't get.)

The picture of the girls with tanning skin modeling the jewelry was AWESOME. :D

I do bead and have made quite a bit of jewelry for my girls.

    10. There are already a few basic patterns free on the web. The people who post these are just wonderful :)

    11. I was wondering about this book myself! :o

    12. Could anybody post or pm me the (if there is one) ISBN-Number of the book ? Without it it makes it a lot harder for my local bookshop to try to import it for me.

    13. It doesnt have one I believe....only available through Haute Doll and Ebay.

    14. i know this sound abit stupid but where can i get it??? lol *headbangs* hmmm i live on the other side of the world lol

    15. hi! i found the book to be beautiful to look at with great pictures, and it seemed to cover the basics such as restringing, faceups, etc. i am a beginner, and have not actually tried most of it, but i think it is a good basic tool. it even has some patterns for various dolls. diane

    16. I picked up my copy at a trunk show at (I think!) Dolls n Friends up in Washington. I would have paid twice as much as I did for it! I already collect books about certain things (childrearing- parrots-dogs) so this was a bonus! It has lots of how -to's and how they did it's and gives you great ideas for your own projects. The patterns are kinda specific- but they are easy to photocopy and tweak to fit your own dolls :) Good variety of dolls and collectors. Diff wigs face-ups clothing shown. Leibchen is to die for!! A good book to look at while traveling or waiting for an apt- interesting and absorbing :)
I have seen it on Ebay several times :)

    17. It seems reasonably useful to me. The directory of websites was very useful as I was trying to decide what head-sculpts would work for some particular characters I had in mind. The face-up tutorial was quite useful. The patterns were more-or-less useful depending on your level of expertise. I found the profiles of the artists quite entertaining though not worth a second read.

It is obtainable from the Haute Doll site.

    18. I got one and refer to it quite a bit.
I've enlarged some of the patterns but havent made any yet. I plan to though. I also like the tutorials.

    19. hmmm maybe i should put a WTB for it :D :D

    20. I'm very new to the bjd world (I don't even have my first doll yet), but I just got the book yesterday and I love it. The company information and pictures are great if you're still trying to decide which dolls to get. There are nice picture-rich tutorials on restringing, faceups, manicures, wig making and several outfit patterns.
The photography in the book is some of the best I've seen and the people and artists that they highlight and interview are very interesting.
