Dollshe and the sculptor may not advertise his products on this forum. Sales may not be discussed, no news threads may be posted regarding new releases.     2. the regular edition of Malice Mizer's Gardenia single uses a photo of a doll, credited to koitsukihime

      and arai tasuku's Alice album has a Mari Shimizu dull on the cover! although I'm not familiar with these types of dolls, since they're more of the art doll side of things than in the BJD hobby (although they are ball jointed)

      in the visual kei world I can also think of D's yami no kuni no alice single, but I have no idea what sculpt she is.

      I don't know how I could ever forget the doll on the Gardenia cover. The other two, I honestly didn't know about. So thank you again!

      There was a gentleman who was the "father of Japanese art dolls", Ryo Yoshida. He created a school to develop the next generation of doll makers who focused on more of the "art doll" aesthetic instead of the more commercially viable dolls that Volks did. Koitsukihime was either his contemporary or one of his students, but I know for sure that Mari Shimizu was one of his students. The lady who made the doll for Mylene Farmer, Etsuko Miura was also another one of his proteges. Ryo Yoshida wrote the first "textbook" on how to make ball-jointed dolls, too. Unfortunately, it was all in Japanese and I wasn't able to secure a copy of it. It's on my list of things to do!

    4. there is a lot of doll history I don't know so all of this is super interesting!

      Anyway, I took a look in my copy of 19990102. (sometimes I wonder how macabre the art looks to people outside of this hobby, what with the floating head in its lap and all.) the doll artist is credited to Masaiko Kusaka (MANBOW) but I couldn't find much info on him.

      hoping not to go too off topic since it's more an art doll than a BJD, but speaking of Dir en grey, the only other cover art I can think of is from Kyo's other band, Sukekiyo. their album Erosio features a doll by an artist named haruhi (commissioned by Kyo himself, apparently. their instagram account is here) but it's definitely more a sculpture than a bjd, though the neck seems jointed? (hidden under a spoiler just in case)

    5. @Radimore interestingly the font that Malice Mizer used on the cover of that album is actually the same one that Mylene Farmer used on her album covers which I thought was a fun little bit of trivia!

      I have a couple books with images by Mari Shimizu and Koitsukihime in them I’ve always loved how ethereal they look… recently I’ve also been noticing a few more contemporary artists who have been using BJD imagery in their work!

    6. Here's something more fun for you: The first Malice Mizer demo tape (in 1992) was called "Sans Logique" (SANS LOGIQUE | MALICE MIZER Info ). It was actually named after a Mylene Farmer single first released in 1989 (Sans logique - Wikipedia ) Mana and Kozi were huge fans of European horror movies and music (both pop and popular). If you look up the music video for Mylene Farmer's "Sans Logique", you can almost see similar themes that would later inspire Malice Mizer.

      @Radimore: thanks for all your input! I can't seem to find much information when it came to Masaiko Kusaka or Haruhi. They both seem to be a new generation of indie art-doll makers. I have to say, though. I really like the Haruhi doll. I know it's definitely off-topic, but I am fascinated by it. If I didn't remember wrongly, D. Lace once produced a three-headed BJD doll head too. I can't quite seem to find it anywhere, but in the back of my hazy, gold-fish memory, I know there was one!

    10. Speaking of diru again, I completely focused on cover art and forgot about their music videos, but there is a lot of doll imagery in their older music videos from 2000 and earlier, like this one from the -ZAN- pv.

      they are usually very short, brief clips used over and over in the same video or across several videos, used for shock imagery that doubles as filler content. I rarely see them on screen for more than a few frames at a time, and since it's so fast paced, those old videos are usually a bit seizure inducing to watch as well. gotta love that old school visual kei charm:eek:

    11. @SPhosphate wow I never knew that about the demo tape! I am a huge fan of Mylene Farmer (even have a tattoo inspired by one of her songs) so I definitely had wondered if she was an influence to some of the early vkei stuff as I was so heavily into all this stuff in my teens :’) (so long ago now rip) I will definitely have to do some more research into this as I find it so fascinating especially learning all the musical artist who influenced them^^

      On the topic of BJDs I definitely remember there being quite a lot of references to BJDs in my early Gothic and Lolita Bibles that I had back then which was where I discovered them. Koitsukihime did a collaboration with Baby, The Stars Shine Bright and there are some dresses some of her dolls wear that have the same fabric used on the dresses BTSSB made in collab with her which I thought was quite cool. Another artist although a painter who used BJD imagery in her work is Minami Shiori (hope I spelt her name right) so there is quite a lot of interesting stuff to look into <3

    12. I love Diru and I remember Zan. But just as you've said, it's easy to miss the dolls.
      This one looks a lot like a Ryo Yoshida original If it wasn't one of his dolls, it's a doll that came from his school (or made to be similar to one of his dolls.)
      For example, this is a Yoshida doll: Astral Doll by Ryo Yoshida
      And this is from one of his students, Hizuki: Hizuki Doll Collection Photographs Ryo Yoshida Japan Astral Katan Ecole Doll | eBay (Hizuki, incidentally, is one of the lecturers of Yoshida's doll academy. You can see the resemblance.

      The doll from Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence is also inspired by a Yoshida original.

    13. I guess we share a few things in common (other than the dolls)! Two of my perpetual sources of inspiration, Mylene and Malice. It's really wonderful to see someone who share these interests.

      I am not sure who Minami Shiroi is, but I do know about Mitsukazu Mihara. ( Mitsukazu Mihara ) She did a lot of early GLB covers and a lot of the interior art. She also wrote and drew a manga called "Doll" with that features robots with ball-joints that were just called "dolls") Her first artbook called "Alice Addiction" (Alice Addiction Mitsukazu Mihara Illustration Art Book Gothic Lolita Punk Japan | eBay ) was prefaced by both Gackt and Koitsukihime. Talk about everybody knowing everybody! :)
