BJDs only for "nerds/weirdos/perverts"?

Mar 8, 2011

    1. I don't think that owning a doll makes you a pervert, but I think there are definitely people who use it as a sexual outlet, and I admit I think that's weird. I understanding taking nude pics to show off blushing, and maybe even just to appreciate the human shape, but there is definitely a line between "nude" doll pics and "naked" doll pics, where the second one is more sexual, that gets crossed sometimes. Some dolls are definitely shaped to be quite sexual, and unrealistically sexual, with the size/shape of their breasts and the available clothes for them (maid outfits for example), that I can definitely see where the connection with a sex doll or porn/hentai comes in. But just because you own a doll and it happens to have boobs does not automatically make you a pervert. Unless you use them to masturbate to, then people who accuse you of seeing them as a sex toy are simply ignorant and rude.

    2. I have to say that I feel a "sexual outlet" involves some kind of actual concentrated sexual activity, whether it's mental or physical. But appreciating the idealized "sexy" attributes of a doll, or taking "naked" pictures, doesn't necessariyl mean a person is having any kind of build-up/release of sexual tension or impulses. Even taking pix of dolls in sexual positions implies nothing, as the photographer can be mostly concerned with achieving the photographic effect being sought, or the character or storyline being portrayed. Once the pix are taken, the general feeling tends to be more satisfaction for having achieved a vision (and having wrangled slipping resin surfaces into cooperation), rather than having made something that's going to be viewed to initiate self-pleasuring. To think otherwise is to ascertain that every scriptwriter that includes a sex or sexy scene in a movie script is doing it so he/she can have a private jerk-off stimulus during the filming of the scene-- (No doubt someone somewhere DOES, but hardly a majority, or even average number in any given sampling.

Working definitions of the socially intolerant:

Nerd: You're not like me and I'm afraid you might be smarter than me.
Weirdo: You're not like me, and I'm afraid you might be content not being like me, and I'm not really content myself, or really sure being me will get me accepted --
Pervert: You're not like me, and I'm afraid you might be enjoying sex more than I've been told we're supposed to/allowed to.

    3. The people who say that we are perverts for being in this hobby are probably perverts themselves because that's the first thing they had on their minds when they see the dolls.

The thought of sex involving my dolls never crossed my mind. Not when I saw them for the first time on the computer or when I first handled them.

I'm a pervert myself (I like yaoi and sex in real life is natural) but not when it comes to dolls. I've been called 'weird' by everybody and I don't know what's the definition of 'weird', so I just shrugged it off. I've been called a nerd just because I do well in College and all I think is "if you would spend the same time as me, reading and studying, you would also do well in College, I'm not smarter than anyone...just more diligent"...

    4. I've never been called a pervert or anything and most of my friends are also in the hobby, as well. I am, admittedly, a nerd and a bit odd but, at 23 years old, I no longer care what strangers or other acquaintances think of me. My parent's have told me it's weird but, again, I've always been into different stuff and my parents are supportive, even if they don't really get it. As for my husband: he'll mess with and tease me about it but it's all in good fun.

    5. I don't see them as sexual, but since my dolls are both young girls and I myself am a woman, this is probably more acceptable than if I owned an adult male doll or something (to society in general). I do find many bjd people eccentric, though, and I consider myself a bit of a weirdo for liking bjds. But in perspective, who doesn't have some hobby or habit that makes them a weirdo, whether it's collecting dolls, color-coding their closet, or putting ketchup on corn-on-the-cob? Everyone has peculiarities, and reasonings for their peculiarities, so bjds are no odder to me that what anyone else does. It might help that I have just two dolls, so they are as un-noticeable as strange eating habits...

    6. I guess not, what defines nerd and weirdo?
my first intention to own a doll was thinking of using the doll as my drawing/posing model.
no one has told me it's weird to own a doll, though all my cousin and sister said to me was "the dolls are too costly, why not spent those money n treat them to dinner~ lol"

    7. I love this.

I'd also ask why they think beautiful resin BJDs have more to do with sex dolls than with childrens' dolls. Who indeed has the corrupted mind?

    8. That's kind of narrow minded of him. :c
I know that there -are- modified BJDs that are for perverted uses (4chan. Sigh.), but that'd be like claiming anyone eating a donut is a police officer because ONE cop ate a donut. It just doesn't make sense. The majority of doll collectors just simply love the hobby. Sure they're anatomically correct, but come on people- We all enter the world with our genitalia showing. Its NATURAL. Owning a doll that mimics natural anatomy isn't perverse.
As for 'being weird'- Well.. None of us are truly ever 'normal'. So that label is just kind of silly.

    9. People at work think I'm weird, but meh, I don't care.

    10. There was a guy I used to work with that assumed I was talking about a sex doll when I told him I was getting a high-quality ball-jointed doll that was made in Asia. I honestly think it's a really stupid stereotype- there's waaaaaaaaaaay more to Asian culture than sex dolls people! And when it comes down to it, if I wanted sex doll, that's what I would have gotten. That's not what I wanted so I didn't. And even though I don't personally understand why it's so important to some people that dolls be anatomically correct, I don't see them as being objects of sexual desire simply because they have "naughty bits." But then you can also take a look at our culture which apparently decided that Barbie was too scandalous, so they decided to add molded-on underwear to her sculpt design. Bottom line: people today (especially those in America) are being taught that the human body is a gross and dirty thing and should only be seen by someone you really love when you're about to engage in the most intimate activity possible between two people. It's for this reason that I feel this stereotype exists- society has taught so many that nudity and anatomical correctness= sexuality.

And as for being a nerd/weirdo, I've always kind of considered myself outside of the normal "box" that most people seem to fall into, but I'm just fine with that. For that matter, where I live anyone that's not tailgating at a college football game and/or out hunting in the woods every weekend is considered weird. Personally, I think it's weird to use all that money on food or ammo that's here one day and gone tomorrow rather than on dolls that can last for the rest of your life.

EDIT: hobbywhelmed, that's probably the BEST set of definitions I've ever read!

    11. a girl once assumed i was into agalmatophilia because i was a guy who had dollfies, and thought i was into that thing where people like other people to dress up as dolls..cant remember the name, i think she was the pervert..lol, but it wasnt the only case, i have had two other girls that when i mentioned i had dollfies asked straight away if it was a sex thing.

but three out of all the people i've talked with isn't so bad i guess and i'm a pretty open minded person when it comes to things like that but its still irritating.

i mean geeze, i almost look away out of respect when changing their clothes...:D

    12. Actually I found myself struggling with this not too long ago. I dislike stereotypes with a passion and the ones imposed on us by non-dollpeople I try to fight wherever I can. Then a little over a week ago I purchased a new girl, an Elfdoll Ruru on a Loongsoul 69cm body. She is BUSTY, to say the least. Usually I shy away from overly large breasts because I don't like the aesthetic, but this girl just clicked for a character of mine, breasts and all. So, excited as I was about beng able to get her I wanted to put her picture up as my Messenger avatar, and then I started doubting. I regularly have pictures of sexy anime guys as my avatar, but the thought of putting this girl up, with her ample cleavage, suddenly made me wonder. What would the people I chat with think? Would they think me weird for owning an obviously sexy doll like that as a girl, would those who know that I go both ways think that I was trying to compensate for not having a RL relationship and think I bought the doll for sexual gratification purposes? And would anything be wrong about getting a doll because you enjoy the sensuality of the sculpt? In my mind there is nothing wrong with sexuality and even fetishes as long as it's consentual, noone gets hurt (unless they explicitly want to) and everyone involved is of consenting age so why would this doll suddenly have to make me feel ashamed of something? In the end I decided the hell with it and put up the picture, and I got no reactions at all. So yeah, sometimes you have to wonder in whose head the stereotype resides and what that says about the people involved.

    13. I wouldn't feel comfortable sexualizing any of my dolls.. I prefer the ones I have for their face sculpts and that alone satisfies me. That and clothes/hair/eyes. My mother was the only person who made an issue out of my dolls being anatomically correct.. and one of my friends like well that's weird they must be used for sexual things, then. ... Had to explain to them that you would not give this type of doll to a young child. -.-; Don't if it ever sank in but he isn't poking fun at me for owning them. (Just balks at the cost and says I'm better off buying an Xbox.)

Pretty much everyone I talk to is kind of eh about bjds but they tolerate it if I talk about it. And they all have their weird quirks anyway. :)

I wouldn't consider myself really... 'normal', and I use that term loosely. I'm drawn to things that aren't run of the mill. I don't say much about people that follow the straight and narrow because that's what they want/like/whatever.

    14. What I've heard from most people (what I've heard negatively anyway), is that they think the BJDs are "creepy". I think that's pretty silly, personally, but I so far haven't had anyone assume I'm some huge pervert because of it.

I think that there ARE definitely perverts in the hobby, considering some... option parts.. are... an option. I also think that there are a lot more perverts that have Dollfie Dreams. Again, considering some of the option parts, and the hugely sexualized DDdy bodies. However, I think perverts exist in any and every hobby.

I consider myself normal, but not typical. I don't go out and drink and party like most people my age, but I don't think I act weird or socially awkward.

    15. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      - Nope. My boyfriend jokes about them in a perverted way, but they're just jokes. It's an easy thing to joke about since they are so detailed when it comes to their bodies.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      - Nope.

      Sexual in any way?
      - Nope. But I can understand why some who don't understand the hobby might think so.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      - For the hobby, no. XD

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      - I consider myself somewhat of both, but not just for the hobby. C:

I mean, I can understand why people would think just things. There are a lot of SD dolls and such with big boobs and wear slinky clothing. But people should just assume that's what it's about. And they also shouldn't just label people a certain way for being interested in this hobby. I mean, I'll admit a lot of people I've meet into the hobby are into anime and video games of the like, so it's easy to be labeled as such. But I'm sure there are people who aren't into those things, or aren't into them as much and are just "normal". I'm honestly not into anime and video games as much as I used to be and still love my dolls and the hobby. If people would be a little more opened minded about the hobby and see that it's more of a creative outlet in many many ways they would understand. But in this society everyone just has to put a label on something and once that's done people don't want anything to do with it, because their image is to important to be associated with something labeled in that way. And that's just something we can't control unfortunately.

    16. Nutshell! :thumbup

These dog-whistle translations get particularly funnier when the accuser is male, accusing a female of being a weirdo or pervert. It says: "You're not my mom/wife/sister, and you're not like what TV tells me women are supposed to be like. You don't want & like the things I've been told women should want & like-- and I'm afraid that means you don't find my penis to be the ultimate authority at the center of the universe. Sexually intimidating you, by calling you a pervert who's into sex-dolls even when I can see they're no such thing, is my way of coping with this fear, taking you uppity females down a peg & ensuring that I'll still feel like I'm on top."
 You can get used to this over the years, but it doesn't stop being funny.

      Fabulous quote :D

Sure I think my guys are gorgeous - but they are less than 3 feet tall! I mean, really! Even those guys totally into Dolphie Dreams, if they really wanted to be pervy wouldn't they have gotten Real Girls?

I am a nerd, geek, otaku & PROUD of it! Been a weirdo my entire life! So that part of owning the dolls works for me LOL

    18. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Nope. I thought they were perverts instead especially the guys. I mean currently, all my dolls are boys. And I never knew they thought of something perverted instead until some of my girl friends told me.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      Nope.

      Sexual in any way?
No, but some fujoshi friends of mine does, although I always got excused by some of my friends. Afraid if I got tainted or so they said xD. Not that I mind though, except most of my boys are straight.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
My brother called me a freak and a weirdo, especially in front of his friends that came over and I had one of my dolls accompanying me. And some of my friends too, especially those who label dolls as reincarnation of Chucky. My mom said I'm weird, most of my so-called-normal friends do too.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Nope. The hobby is cute. I know a male doctor who collects Barbies, Pullips and Monster high dolls. It's nothing out of the ordinary. It's a hobby. What's the difference with collecting stamps or cards or something? None.

I guess different people comes with different point of view? Most normal people pretty much judge things based on what they're familiar with. I guess BJD gets sexual in ways if they compare it with being a DD with big chest. XXXXL sized chest is just too much. It differs on what way they view things, if their mind is in the gutter, things goes perverted and sexual. Some people just think too much. Lol.
But then again, I'm not really normal to begin with. xD

    19. I've always been an outcast and different from everybody else and somewhat odd at times, but not a weirdo about my dolls, however sometimes when I watch box openings on YouTube the majority of the BJD owners are on the weird our nerdy side

    20. I was a nerd or geek long before I found BJDs. Maybe there's something about this hobby that attracts nerds,I don't know.It seems to me that people are quick to call you a nerd no matter what your hobby is.
I also think it's kind of harsh to say people who sexualize their dolls are perverts. These dolls are about fantasy and some people would rather use them for sexual fantasies. I'm not into that myself but I can definitely understand it.
