BJDs only for "nerds/weirdos/perverts"?

Mar 8, 2011

    1. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Nobody has said such so I can only say no ^.^

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No.

      Sexual in any way?
Not in any way I can think of.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      Oh yeah ;P

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Not really, other things, heck yeah!

    2. Nerd I am. Weird also. I don't take offense when friends and family call me such ( but the closest friends are right there in weird with me xD ) As for the whole "BJDs are sexual" I don't see them that way. Obviously the people that claim that they're sexual see them as sexual themselves.

    3. People who think they are sexual are bigger perverts than us!! :I

    4. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Not me, but my friends boyfriend once called her a pedophile for the hobby. >.<

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
no @_@ and if I did, I'd probably freak out XD

      Sexual in any way?
sexual? No. Sexy? Maybe. But it also depends on how sexual is defined. To me, sexual means that I would have them engaged in a sexual act of some kind, even pornographic. I think its where that fine line between artistic and porn is lol

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Nope. But I'm sure other people consider me weird :D lol

    5. I think it's a bit odd to accuse the proportions of being sexual when the dolls vary to some extent. My SD girl looks very young and hardly like a sex object. Also, what about all those girls irl who do happen to have larger breasts? Are they automatically more sexual than ones with smaller? I've always seen this argument as being kind of silly. My boyfriend seems to be a bit baffled by the hobby, but he's got his own weird hobbies, and he respects me anyway. I think he appreciates that I put a lot of effort into earning money for it and learning new artistic skills.

    6. Hmm..I'm not an owner [yet] but I do believe there are people a little more eccentric than myself. I don't think I'll ever take my doll anywhere. Conventions/expos for the like are one thing, but I'm not gonna bring it to the store or park or whatever [unless I'm taking pictures of course XD] but for the pure heck of it, no. I don't cosplay, I don't write yuri or whatever it is some of you do, I don't make picture stories. It really is just a creative outlet for me. I like writing, I like making characters, I like creating, I'd love to try my hand at face ups and creating clothing. I guess I'm not gonna say it can't escalate into something more, maybe it will, maybe it won't but for now, its pure creative pleasure with none of the 'weirdness' I guess you'd say associated. But as everyone said, there are some weird people and some not weird in every hobby!

    7. No one's yet said any of those things to me. I'm already a nerd, weirdo, and freak anyway because I'm into all kinds of RPGs (including LARP), Star Trek, LotR/general Fantasy and who knows what else, so the dolls are among the less weird things in my life I guess. The people who know me just don't bother considering anything I do nerdy any more, they're used to it by now.

    8. My guy friends like to make jokes about my dolls being "sex" dolls (which really makes no sense, because sex dolls are lifesized and have a completely different function), but boys will be boys.
Some of my friends tell me that my room is super creepy, especially since I have a bunch of dancing clown music boxes hanging around my shelves. I do see their point though.
In general, I only invite people I am very close to into my room, so if they poke fun at me, I really don't mind. I pride myself in being unique and spending my money on something that is interesting rather than a $500 guess bag. :)

    9. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?

If so, they haven't said that to my face.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

Yup. I showed the Iplehouse website to one of my art history teachers, and she immediately thought they looked sexualized.

Then there was this thread on Reddit. Speaking of which, r/BJD is a sweet little subforum. However, some fool with the top comment had posted a picture of a Dollfie Dream modded into a sex toy. And this person claimed this was the primary purpose of BJDs! He/She was corrected multiple times, but a lot of people believed the commenter at first.

      Sexual in any way?

      As seen above, yes.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

Usually, I only tell people about this hobby if I trust them A Lot. However, when I was in the hospital last Spring, I did a photoshoot with one of my dolls to cheer up. Everyone was really nice about it, and random people came up and asked questions. Nobody made me feel abnormal.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

I pretty much considered myself one or other before discovering the hobby.

    10. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No. Honestly, I don't tell many people about the hobby (and by that I mean my family and two friends outside of the hobby know about it). Even if people did, I don't imagine how people can find them sexual, especially my dolls. They're all dressed pretty modestly.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
Not unless we were talking about the DDdy Dollfie Dreams. And honestly, that person was me about a year ago. I ended up becoming much more open-minded.
      Sexual in any way?
I can see how some people could see dolls as sexualized. Especially seeing some of the companies. photos. Like Iplehouse does have very sexualized photos for their larger dolls, if I'm correct.
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
This is....well, I've always been an outcast. Of course, with the people I told, I've not gotten much of a response.
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Well, not for this hobby, but I am a bit odd. And I'm okay with that.

    11. Dude, tell your bf to drop it. I don't consider myself a nerd or a pervert and I like dolls. That's just sort of rude after a while. I mean, he just told you you are a pervert nerd weirdo, which are generally negative things.

    12. Some of my friends think my dolls are weird, but In all I would just tell them that they have no room to point fingers with a hand that has an imprint of video game controller on it ;)

My girls are all MSD sized right now, & mostly concerned about getting new clothes vs taking them off for any seedy reasons.

I get more remarks about being too old for Hello Kitty than I do my dolls. *_*

    13. I agree with Beau~Barbare, people who says that the dolls are sexual are some kind of perverts. I've never thought like that about my girl. Though I've seen people from the hobby making "sexual-porn" photos to her/his dolls and seeing it like a dirty thing, I suppose it all depends on the way you look at them.

    14. I'm still looking for my first BJD and the comments I've gotten from my boyfriend is that they are "creepy" or "props for a horror film"...although nothing in a sexual perverted way, he says it's fine that I still like dolls and whatever it's just not something he is interested in which I understand.
My roommie commented that she doesn't like how some of the bodies seem too slender, which is often true, but again nothing about them being sexual. We are all nerdy/weirdos in our own way already so that part does not seem like a big matter to me. :)

    15. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Nope. they only think that im a childish collector lol

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No

      Sexual in any way?
for me? No. for others, maybe yes.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      yes lol

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
nerd bec new dolls are keep coming on my way now lol

    16. Well, let's face it, when the definition of being a nerd is playing videogames and reading comics, then we're all heck of nerds.
To be honest, back in the day when I didn't knew anything of BJDs I couldn't imagine what adult men liked about miniature trains for example.
Then a friend of mine got BJDs and I wanted to have them too - they looked like anime characters to me.

No, no one said I was a pervert for the hobby, but some friends of mine think my dolls are creepy, especially the blank ones. (When I look at blank dolls I see a white canvas and phantasize about painting them)

Yes, I once talked to a fellow student (I don't know anymore why I brought that up) and she didn't understand the concept of BJD and thought I was talking about sex dolls, lol. Other fellow students of mine were quite interested and saw them like they are - as "collectible art toys".

All the people that know I'm collecting the dolls think I'm weird but not only because of the dolls, but because they are so expensive. They cannot understand how someone can spend so much money on dolls.

I'm not sure what's going on with me, that I'm collecting "toys" as an adult (I also like video games, plushies etc). To be honest I think I compensate something with it~ but I don't think it's bad or that I want to chance it.

Also, like you said youre boyfriend and family (brother) thinks it's weird.
Well my family thinks it's weird because of spending so much money. And I'm not the type who always has longtime relationships (for other reasons), but two boys I dated (not at the same time, lol) knew about the dolls and actually weren't negative about them at all. I think if I dated one a few months longer, he actually may have bought me a doll as a gift.
But I think I was only lucky there are certainly a lot people out there who don't understand this hobby at all.

    17. Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
Not exactly talked to, but I saw a comment to someone's pic of a BJD the other day (an Obitsu Gretel, the ball-jointed version with joints clearly visible in the photo), asking what size she was, if her mouth opened and whether she was shaved o.O The original poster didn't even know what that dude was talking about. That made me realize that should anyone EVER leave a comment like that to a pic of my dolls I'd probably (verbally) kick them into oblivion ... or at least remind them that contrary to popular belief, the internet is not exclusively for porn. :ablah:

    18. My friend once said I was childish for having them...Said the kettle to the pot as she played with her OWN doll. >A>;;

Gotten called a nerd for my hobby? Try all my hobbies. XD I'm freaking PROUD of it! Long live the nerds!

    19. Nerd pride! :cheer

Reminds me of my boyfriend. The first time he got cheeky about my dolls I silently pointed to the cubic metre of Lego stacked in our hobby room and somehow that settled the matter :aangel:

    20. It's funny their all for talking smack til it's thrown back at 'em.
