BJDs only for "nerds/weirdos/perverts"?

Mar 8, 2011

    1. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      No!
At least, not that I know of.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No D:

      Sexual in any way?
      Not that I know of!

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
I have been called nerd and weirdo many times before, but not because of my dolls. I'm sure plenty of people find me weird, but no one has ever said anything like that to my face. It's pretty obvious they find it ABJDs a weird hobby, but they don't feel the need to offend me because of it ^^"

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      No.
I'm well aware of the fact that some people find that this is a weird hobby to have. However, I don't see what is so weird about it? Collecting dolls has always seemed to be a common thing for me, it's just that these particular dolls are different. I think it's just their prices and the bigger trouble to get BJDs that makes most people find it weird.
irl, I have never heard anyone being called a pervert for collecting pretty dolls x_x that sounds so strange to me. But maybe that is because I have only (personally) known women who talk about collecting dolls. Probably, people would react differently to male collectors.
I do consider myself a bit of a nerd, for things that are not related to this hobby at all.

    2. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents. As a guy I can understand why a guy would say that the dolls are sexualized. It is because guys are more visual and would think that way. That doesn't mean that the dolls are, it is just his opinion.

I think anyone that pursues a hobby too an extreme it you maybe labelled a weirdo, or nerd, not usually a pervert, but because the dolls are anthropomorpical, I can see that comment.

I am a geek, nerd, weirdo, and i think everyone is to some extent. But it is not specifically for being into the BJD.

    3. I was already so deep in the nerd/weirdo -class that having few dolls doesn't change anything. Even if my partner thinks I have become too obsessive with them.

      No one (yet) had called my doll-hobby as sexual fetish, but then they are quite innocent compared to x-rated fanfiction I read, among other things. ^^;

    4. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?

No, no one ever suggested that to me, but one person did mention that they had heard the psychological profile for doll collector's is psychological problems centered in feeling denied the normal things of life from childhood years. This makes me laugh.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

No, not at all. I would almost suspect a person that mentions this to me may have an issue they may not even be aware of.

      Sexual in any way?

Not with my bjd, but I have a male Himstedt doll that a friend was very offended by because he is anatomically correct. She felt that was sexually explicit and gross. I burst out in laughter as she is just a little prudish. I think he is wonderful. He is always dressed.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

Yes, and since collecting dolls and toys as an adult puts me in a different social group in my culture its fine if people think I am a nerd or weird. Sometimes, I think people that have no hobby or collection are boring and weird. Lol

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

No, just a highly creative person with hobbies and interests outside the typical norm. I consider myself interesting and an artist of sorts. I guess they can be strange, but who is not odd at times?

    5. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No one thinks... And I can guarantee that I'm not :D

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No...

      Sexual in any way?
      No...

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
They don't call me nerd or weirdo at all. I accept the fact that I have other nickname like "Sadie" or so because I like to box and have joined fighting club in high school and university and like to watch horror movies, etc...But that must be just for fun but not for real...:D I don't have any malicious attitude to other live-being at all. So I don't think people who like BJD will definitely be "nerd" or "weirdo". I respect people who have hobby for themselves but not people who laugh at others just because they have different preference/hobby. :(

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
No...I just like dolls because they are cute and I can enjoy creating new things for them when I feel stressful or depressed from my life. And the words "nerd" and "weirdo" just...have no relation to BJD hobby.

    6. Most of the people who have actually seen my dolls, since i don't bring them out in public much, have only seen the head or a body part when I'm painting it. They either think it's cool or it's creepy. I've never been labeled any of those things especially not a pervert. I have other things that get me labeled as a nerd by my parents (Star Trek mainly). They think my dolls are an odd thing to spend money on but they don't see them as sexual. They are as supportive as they can be. My boyfriend is the same way. If your significant other is making fun of you talk to them about it. Let them know that's not acceptable behavior. If they care they'll try hard to stop doing it.

    7. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
When I got my second hand doll from someone at AWA she had an exposed breast. So I got quite a few comments at the convention about why I chose that particular outfit. I didn't carry her around after I brought her to our room.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
Yes I've thought that myself. Just looking at company photos LS seems to have some weird Nazi fetish (looking at their boy ver. 2 73 cm).
      Sexual in any way?
Oh yeah. I showed my husband a DC Dolores with a posable penis and a LS doll boy that had what looked to be half a dozen penis attachments. He thought suddenly that they were porn dolls and there must be a girl doll with a workable vagina to make doll porn. He even asked if the two LS dolls I bought had holes in their lower regions.
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
My friends sure don't understand it but my cousin seems to like them as much as I do. She doesn't like the prices though.
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      Kinda.

    8. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      Not that I know off.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No, fortunately not.
      Sexual in any way?
My mother said my new Souldoll Maa reminded her of "one of those fancy sex dolls". And a classmate once talked about lolita's fantasizing about having sex with their dollfies. That is it.
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
Yes. By friends and family, and probably strangers as well.
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Certainly. I used to think that the person who got me into the bjd hobby was crazy (also for owning bjd ;P) and I still think that. I also think I'm crazy / a weirdo / nerd, also for owning expensive dolls as an adult. It IS weird. And there is nothing wrong with weird. ;)

    9. I kind of think of us all as nerds, haha. To me, a nerd is someone who is openly really happy and passionate about something, and so that makes us Doll Nerds. I think that's great x)

As for the perverted aspect, I've never gotten that response personally. I have no idea how I would react to that.

    10. Ooohhh my. I've never been confronted with them being sexual. But my husband is a little weirded out/put off by the "junk" on the boys, which cracks me up. Otherwise he never mentions anything sexual or weird about them. He's such a good and understanding man. o^-^o

BUT my friends. All our friends are guys. They aren't crass enough to make the sexual reference....but I am a nerd/weirdo and the dolls are creepy and plotting their murder, obviously. I just recently set them out for all to see, so this is a recent development that I actually find hilarious, lol. One friend turns their heads away so they can't see their eyes.

    11. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?

Yeah, but I kind of provoked that comment. It was meant as a joke, and the person who said it was really laughing at the time, but I actually made a merkin for a female doll once. Why? Because I was sick of seeing seeing dolls sans any kind of gender identification and/or dolls with just a slit or a rudimentary penis and nothing else. This doll was very womanly otherwise. She was supposed to be from an era where most women still had hair down there and I just figured at least one female doll in my collection should look like a woman of her era would have. It was a little perverted, I guess, laugh, but then again that doll was no kid's toy and why not?

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

Oh yeah, I get that all the time from people who are not in the hobby. Most people in my family they're used to me collecting dolls but the first BJD's I bought with their more correct anatomical parts that really amused them. First male doll in particular my one brother was like "Holy crap! That doll actually has junk?" I told him about the male dolls with parts that can rotate and that? He about laughed himself silly.

      Sexual in any way?

Depends upon the doll. I definitely don't view my dolls as sex toys. I'm definitely not into doing the naughty with them, cough, but the adult dolls are allowed to be sexy, to have personalities, even lovers, if it's part of their character, their back story. I don't do that with the child dolls. They're allowed to have platonic GF's or BF's as school children would, but that's it. An adult doll I would paint the genitals as part of the whole face up process but a kid doll, I never would. That would be too creepy for me. I don't like the BJD dolls that have little kid faces and overly sexualized bodies either. I don't think it's cool for a doll to have the head of an eight year old and the body of a porn star.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

Yeah, and for a lot of other things too. I'm not Miss Normal. Never have been, never will be, and I don't care. At this point people can think what they like. Their idea of "normal" doesn't interest me much.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

No more than anyone else. BJD people as a rule are a creative and fun lot. There are lots of kooky, artistic people on here. It doesn't bother me at all. There's a very old expression "No one notices the mad amongst the mad..." Meaning if you are considered weird or nutty and everyone around you is too, then who really cares? That's been doll collecting for me. I'm allowed to be a bit nutty when I'm with other doll people. It is a bit crazy at times and we all know it is, but we're all in good company and it doesn't matter anymore. We are a weird community sometimes, but it's nice weird, and we have that, solidarity, community...

    12. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      Not because of my dolls...

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
No - I've had conversations about how they WOULDN'T work like that very well (although Ringdoll & that poseable part...)

      Sexual in any way?
Now that all depends. They are not sex toys (I hope no one uses them that way - resin's poisonous....) but they are beautiful & a lot of them are sexy sexy looking (Iplehouse :D) My dolls shell characters that are human & sexual, of course, although the thought of dolly porn (I know it's out there) is unappealing to me.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
I AM a nerd & have been weird all my life. The general reaction when friends find out about my dolls - 'oh that's just like you'...LOL

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Not because of this hobby LOL

    13. I think almost all of my friends thing doll collecting in itself is stupid and weird - especially if they knew the investment I have made - but I don't think I have ever had anyone mention the sexual part - I have seen some people pictures of dolls posed in strange settings however so that could give some a false idea - but I love doll, all dolls and am very new to the bjd's but there is so much variety and I can see myself getting hooked fast!

    14. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      Nope.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
Yep. Some of my male friends misinterpreted what the abbreviation of BJD was:sweat, but we just laughed about it:XD:.
      Sexual in any way?
Once. When I first got my doll Damian he came with a face up, and body blush. My mom was not too thrilled that he was anatomically correct, and the blush was 'detailed' in the area in between his legs:sweat. She recovered after I gave him ill-fitting gray boxers, but we had a long talk afterwards....
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
Nope. My family says its my collection, and my friends think they are like Japanese PVC figures. I think the only people who think I'm a weirdo are those people who see me carrying an SD around the park for photo shoots.
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      Nerd possibly. Weirdo not really.

    15. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?

A pervert? Not at all although some people do seem to be awfully uncomfortable if any of my dolls are naked. I don't understand why though, it's just beautiful resin. They jokingly tell me not to leave them naked for too long once in a while due to their discomfort but I don't do so either way because I'm afraid they might get cold, haha~

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

I must admit that I've heard quite a few people say that but not about my smaller size dolls. I don't find them a fetish at all but I personally dislike dolls who are dressed up to imply a certain sexual preference. I find them cute and don't assocciate them with anything sexual so maybe that is why it is disturbing to me.

      Sexual in any way?

Some dolls certainly imply something sexual but I've never heard it before because my dolls tend to be on the cute side rather than sexy.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

I've been labeled odd, strange, associal, weird, freak and more by people who are not into the hobby and I totally understand why. Some other hobby's might seem strange to me as well so it doesn't bother me when someone else deems my hobby weird. I do not tolerate people who actually shun people because of their hobby though.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

I'm just me. Nothing weird about that you know. I know stranger hobbies than playing with dolls so why should I be offended if anyone calls me weird. I consider myself being just a normal girl with a not so common hobby.

    16. That's precisely how I feel.

    17. Yes, precisely this.
Considering my other hobbies include acrobatic hula hooping, fire hooping and collecting nineteenth century poison bottles, morphine syringes and coffin plaques, I'd say my dolls are the least of my worries when it comes to my social ineptitude and my general propensity to scare off any normal person that comes my way.

    18. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?

Not as far as I know. Granted, I don't make it a point to talk about the doll genitalia.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

      Nope!

      Sexual in any way?

My dad cracks jokes about my poor boy looking like a girl, if that counts.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

Not anymore so than my perusal of local anime conventions in full cosplay.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

Nah. It's just another doll hobby. It's not any weirder than porcelain dolls or glass unicorns.

    19. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No, never that..But if anyone did then I've never heard about it.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

A lot of my associates confused them with the Japanese sex dolls, which is understandable for an 'outsider'.

      Sexual in any way?
The abbreviation catches a lot of people off guard. :P

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      Neither

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
I consider myself as both. :P I don't mind it.

    20. I wasn't sure what to think of dolls before I got into the hobby. I had friends that were into them, but I also knew people who thought they were fetish objects. I was kind of on the fence. It made me really uncomfortable when my doll friends started to talk about dolls, and I asked them not to become "crazy doll ladies," call them their children, or use any sexual language concerning them. It wasn't that I thought they were sexual, just that I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be. Then I got my first doll (pressured by these friends), and fell in love with the hobby. Having one myself without any creepy connotations, I was able to see that they are really movable statues. They're pieces of art, and people will see in that what they will. Only five months later, and I have six of them! I shouldn't have held out so long.
As for being a nerd, I've always been one. I grew up on comic books and started obsessing over anime in early grade school. I think that being a nerd often goes hand-in-hand with the hobby, as being a nerd often goes hand-in-hand with an appreciation for stylized aesthetics of all kinds.
