BJDs only for "nerds/weirdos/perverts"?

Mar 8, 2011

    1. I'm definitely not seeing the focus of these dolls as something sexual, that seems to totally miss the point. Some dolls are over sexualized and that can be for a variety of reasons but dolls in general are not designed with that purpose in mind and are not (or at least very rarely) used in that manner. I already consider myself unusual in regards to social norms and hobbies and the like and while I do believe BJDs require a certain acquired taste I don't think anyone should be made to feel like they're not normal for being involved with them.

    2. My husband collects Legos, transformers and anime figurines. He doesn't say anything about my dollies either.

    3. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      No.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      No.

      Sexual in any way?
      No.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      No.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      No.

People have collected and created dolls for thousands of years so I don't see the reason why BJD's in and of themselves are any different. At the end of the day - people are people and have the ability to view just about anything as perverse or divine based on their own point of view.

    4. I have very few friends that even know I'm into bjds, because it's so difficult to explain how I'm buying a doll worth a car payment. But hey, we're all just people. I'm a firefighter and I work as a freelance artist. That's pretty... normal? If I show up at your door because grandma took a spill or the roast caught fire, you wouldn't even know I was into unorthodox hobbies.

My husband also gets super weirded out when I spend hours fiddling with the dolls but he respects my random hobbies enough to say nothing but, "Watch out, the dog's gonna lick Miyu's feet." I also keep all my dolls naked in their boxes when not being played with but I don't really see any perversion in that. Just makes storage easier.

    5. I feel that doll owners do not normally see anything sexual in dolls, but the people who accuse them of being perverts obviously do!
Reminds me of people getting all freaked out about children's fashion dolls being too sexy, and I don't think the typical child thinks about the dolls that way at all. I remember when my kids were 10 or 11 and I mentioned once that a lot of parents think Barbie and Bratz dolls are too sexy for children. My kids both looked at me like I'd just told them the craziest thing on earth, and then they just laughed and laughed. It seriously had never occurred to them to think about dolls in that way.
I think if I ever thought a particular doll was a huge turn-on, I'd be too embarrassed to buy it.

    6. That's a good way to put it! All about perspective ^_^ I know some people prefer dolls that are well endowed in one way or another but I think it's more of an aesthetic desire and not like super pervy. We all like different body types!

    7. If we are supposed to be perverts for collecting anatomically correct dolls, than I'll have to be the über-perv, since I sculpt them and spend time working on their genitals as well. Just because something has sculpted or painted genitals, doesn't mean it is a sexual object.

As for this hobby being for nerds: Well... I'm a fervent tabletop roleplayer, so for me there's some truth in that statement! Yay, nerds!

    8. !!!!!!!! ditto, ditto, DITTOOOOO to what you said in bold!! Recently I was talking to my mom about my first barbie, a FRANCIE. Those of you who don't know - francie is a little shorter, she's supposed to be younger, and she has littler boobs. I was 5 when I got her. Mom told me I wanted a barbie because my older sister had them (she had francies, too) and she didn't want to get me a BARBIE because her boobs were big and she thought it was too sexual. So I got francie instead. I said the same thing to her that your kids said to you - although at the time we had this discussion, I was like 40, LOL -- but I REMEMBER -- I said, mom, I never once played with my dolls "that way" or thought about barbie's boobs versus francie's boobs other than they can't share clothes because they weren't the same size.

Leave it to the adults to put sex, or fetishes, on something that, to a kid, is JUST a pretty girl in pretty clothes. Hah.

    9. I would consider myself pretty "normal", though I don't go by the standards of normal in my area. If I did, I'd be driving a jacked up truck, drinking beer in a redneck bar each night, and have no formal education... this town is something serious. I've had people tell me I must be really smart just because I brought a book to read to my college classroom. So here, reading makes you a weirdo.

I think the standard for normal is different in every part of the world, so I don't worry about it.

I own my own home, own my own car, take care of my children, have a job, and handle my business. Pretty normal.

I've never really had anyone make comments about my dolls being weird or perverse... well except when I bought my first doll, my boss at the time thought I'd lost my mind because of the price. But he thought the doll itself was lovely. When I first met my fiance, he joking called me "weirdo" because I spent so much time and energy on my dolls.

I think some of these dolls have more of a sexual feel to them than others. I was kind of like "really?" when I saw one doll had a joint in his penis. Not my cup of tea, but to each his own. But in general, they're just beautiful. The realism of them, including genitalia and body blushing, makes them really neat. That's the thing that most attracted me to them... they just looked so real.

    10. To most people I think I come across very "normal". I do love a lot of things that others consider "nerdy" but I just think those things are fun. Some people just take life to seriously or they are too worried about what others think that they can't think for themselves. I don't care what others think and do what makes me happy and I tell others to do the same (so long as it isn't hurting anyone.) As for my dolls and the sexual references...I keep my dolls dressed so most others don't even know about their parts.

    11. I get called a weirdo all the time for liking BJD's but I'm a man and mostly straight so...

    12. I've definitely been seen as "weird" and "childish" for liking these dolls, but I doubt that 100% due to them and likely a mixture of them and my other obsession with My Little Pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dolls, aside from Barbie and other accepted fashion dolls, are simply commonly viewed as a childish thing. Add that these dolls tend to be much more realistic and larger than your average fashion doll, it ups the creep factor.

I DO however think it's odd that these dolls could be considered sexual. Perhaps I might understand that point of view with some female dolls with particularly large and exaggerated breasts, but for the most part a majority of these dolls just simply do not say anything to me about being a fetish.

    13. I like to think of myself more as "an eccentric" rather than "nerd" or "weirdo," if only because the older people I work with would be more comfortable with that term. ;) But I do tend to share my doll interests only with close friends, not casual acquaintances or co-workers, in case people get the wrong idea. Never got the "must be a sexual thing!" reaction, but my inner circle tends to be at least as eccentric as I am.

Dolls sure aren't sexual to me, but on the other hand, I can see why some people could draw that conclusion. A painting or a sculpture can also be sexual, depending on the subject and how it's presented. Some dolls are clearly sculpted to look sexy. That doesn't mean they're meant to appeal to a fetish, though, anymore than it means you have a weird fetish if you're excited by depictions of people in certain films or poems. You can be excited by something as a representation without having a weird attraction to it qua object. Influenced by an extreme (mis)interpretation of Freud, a lot of people today assume that any strong attraction or interest in anything must be sexual. And if the interest is uncommon, it must be a fetish to those who like it.

    14. Well, there will always be a small proportion of BJD owners who do wierd/ perverted things with their dolls, but as far as I'm concerned the vast majority of people only enjoy the beauty of BJD, more like art than a sexualized thought.

    15. I usually get called childish for having my dolls. It's gotten to a point where I get almost embarrassed when people go in my room but at the same time I love my dolls dearly. I have been called weird and told to hide my dolls because they're creepy but not perverse

    16. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      Yes, my ex girlfriend.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      Yes, same as above

      Sexual in any way?
I dont see them as sexual. although I don't own a bjd yet I have owed volks dd and obitsus and I saw them like "daughters"

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
Not to many people know about my hobby.

      Do you conside
r yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
No, I mean look at computers. When I was growing up anyone that liked computers was a "nerd", now everyone has one.

    17. has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby? Yes, of cause.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like? Surely.
Sexual in any way? Naturally. Especially SDs and 70cm
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby. Definitely.
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby? No. I'm nerd besides the hobby ))) This one little hobby is just a small part of the iceberg ))))

    18. I am odd and people just accept it, without me even mentioning dolls to them! I have been accused of being a pervert in the past for looking at dolls with blushing but that's just ignorant people not wanting to ask why I am looking and what I am actually looking at!

    19. I'm sure some people think it's weird, but I have so many hobbies it wasn't much of a stretch for people to accept 'fancy dolls' were now a part of them. I mean, they can just deal with it, honestly. Haven't heard anything negative yet, but if I do I will be sure to deliver the stink eye.

Ah, once my dad caught sight of me squinting at two heads consideringly and told me I looked crazy. I just shrugged at him and started explaining faceups until he had regret in his heart.

    20. NO. Unless somebody actually does use BJDs in a way not intended, BJD owners/enthusiasts should not and cannot be called weird, nerdy, or perverted. No, I don't consider myself a nerd, anyways. Everyone has some kinds of hobbies, most of which they themselves label as nerdy! :)
