BJDs only for "nerds/weirdos/perverts"?

Mar 8, 2011

    1. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No, no one has ever called me a pervert for having dolls. You can call me a pervert for reading BL any day, but I'm not sure why someone would do so for having dolls.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
No, they understand that dolls are dolls. The only thing I have been told is that I am "playing" with toys by my mom (not to be mean, just to poke fun). My sister's future grandma-in-law thinks my hobby is nice and so does one of my friends.

      Sexual in any way?
No, the only sexual thing I own is an anime figure. My mom got it for me because she thought she was a cute bunny girl and failed to realize how much skin she was showing. XD

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
Yes, but this is already something that I have established. I'm a big Trekkie, Whovian, anime, and manga/comics fan. The fact that I watch BSG isn't really helping me gain those non-nerdy points either. ;)

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
      I'm already those things~

    2. Some people are being perverted with their dolls and I don't have any say against it. I don't really care. I've never been called a weirdo or a pervert because of BJDs. But most people I know think they are creepy and dont want to sleep in the same room as them haha. most people I know who has BJDS are fairly normal people. But I bet they ahve a huge creative side nevertheless.

    3. Especially with dolfies there's a lot going on in that weird direction. =.=;
So be careful. If you own one, you will become one as well. :P

Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
      Partially. When I get to show them to people (which isn't very often, because the subject doesn't come up very often), they sometimes react weirdly to the fact, that they aren't the smooth barbie-like doll they've expected. Mostly I hear, that dolls are just dolls and therefore don't need nipples or a sculpted penis. Since they have those, people often ask me for the reason and I guess that's also what makes most of the "pervert"-labeling happening. ^^;

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
Well, best not to show them some sites, where you could get the idea. ^^; but, no.

      Sexual in any way?
Yes, because of the reasons in question 1.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      Definitely. I guess it has a lot to do with what you like doing in your hobby, but painting, sewing, modding, etc. is considered "nerdy behaviour" a lot. And who still has dolls and really does stuff with them as an adult? ^^;

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

Nerd? Yeah, maybe. Weirdo? Hm, well...

    4. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No, not that they’ve ever said.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
I have a doll that I made to be risqué as a talking point. This is the only doll that anyone has ever said something like that about.

      Sexual in any way?
So this boils down to how you present your dolls. Think of it like porn vs. artistic nudes. A body by itself, even with everything displayed to the world, is not sexual just like you can sexualize something/someone that does not have sex organs. If you are not deriving any sexual gratification from your dolls or seeking to stimulate others in that way, regardless of how they look, you are not a pervert. If someone else sees something sexual, they are the ones with the perversion.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
It’s strange considering all the posts I have seen in my lifetime from people about they have been bullied by family and friends for the things like but I have never had this problem. Everyone I have ever met has been very accepting. Maybe it is because I choose my relations carefully or because I am not ashamed of the things I like so there is no sport in baiting me.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
Not at all. Considering how many people collect dolls in the world I don’t find this hobby strange or eccentric. Are there nerds in the hobby? Sure. Does being part of the hobby make you a nerd? Not at all.

    5. I think I can safely say that no one has ever called me a pervert, not for having BJDs or any other dolls anyway.
If someone were going to call me a pervert I think it would be more likely because I read and collect Slash-zines, Yaoi and BL anime, manga, and dojinshi, as well as gay male fiction.
Oh, and also because they probably saw the leather whip and tickler I have hanging on my wall. ^_~

However, since none of that usually comes up in my day to day conversations, any more than my personal sexual predilections and preferences do, I suspect I don't need to worry too much about being called a pervert. :-D

btw: The whip and the tickler, or leather flail, are part of my weapons collection, which consists mostly of what I refer to as "silent" weapons, such as swords, knives, throwing stars, etc. while I realize that for many people, whips and the like have definite sexual connotations, I simply view the whip as a fascinating and beautiful weapon.

I'm assuming when you use the term fetish, you are referring to a sexual fetish, as opposed to a spiritual or magical fetish such as a charm or talisman.
No, I've never had anyone refer to BJDs or dolls as a sexual fetish... However, I did have a TSA agent ask me if my Volks Kohaku, Lue, was a religious object?!? 0_o
Granted, Lue's backpack carrying case that he was in, is shaped like a black gothic looking coffin. ^_~
Still, just what did he think Lue was, a voodoo doll?... a statue of a saint?...??? :-D

When I was growing up a nerd was someone who really liked math, and excelled at it. They usually belonged to the school chess club, as well. The term was also sometimes used for someone who was really into science, too.
Later on, with the advent of the personal computer, people who liked computers, knew how to operate them, write code, etc. were also commonly called nerds.

Lol, no one has ever called me a nerd, since I hate math, need a cheat sheet to play chess, and as for my knowledge of computers, let's just say I know enough to be dangerous... to the computer! ;D

Weird on the other hand, that I will freely and proudly admit to being. Even my father used to tell me I was weird, lol, I took it as a complement. :-D

    6. I can't see anything sexual in my doll, I'd rather consider it my alter ego. I might be a bit weird at times but noone would call me a perv.

    7. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Uh..... no. I'm gonna go ahead and say sewing and crafting and painting dolls is generally not read as sexually oriented activity by the average person.
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
No. Seriously no. Are there really all these people running around going OMG YOUR DOLLS ARE TOTES SEX TOYS whenever they come across a bjd collector? Because I am very open about my hobby and I have yet to meet a single person whose mind runs in that direction when they see my dolls.
      Sexual in any way?
      ....see above. Also, nope!
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
No. Pretty much everyone who has come across my hobby has either found it interesting and asked me about how they're made and what I do to customize them, or been politely not interested. I have yet to meet anyone who had the balls to be openly disparaging because of something they discover that another grown adult chooses to do for fun. Who does that, anyway?
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
No.... I make it my practice to a) not do things that I'm going to feel bad about or b) judge/label myself?

    8. I can see his point, especially with the more anime/manga style BJDs. Those child faces on mature-figured bodies (some with HUGE breasts) is very suspect. It's an aspect of the hobby that I find off-putting. I find it difficult to find bodies that are child-like enough to work with the child face-sculpts, especially for my SD size girls.

So, yes, I can totally understand how your boyfriend could have formed that opinion of BJDs.

      Teddy

    9. This hobby attracts certain kinds of people, as most hobbies attract certain kinds of people to them. So the people who are outside the hobby are always going to think that those in the hobby are strange. We may even feel the same way about them.

I mostly see a lot of geekier folks here, and I think this is one of the geekier hobbies. So I'm not surprised when I see others getting called geeky or nerdy. I think the sexual part does definitely stem from these dolls having "bits." The outside folk aren't really used to that kind of thing, and are programmed that "bits" are always sexual. It doesn't help when there are tv shows out there showing off people and their expensive sex dolls as a form of entertainment. I've not been called a pervert for owning dolls. Then again I surround myself with people who are also geeky and can understand odd hobbies.

    10. I've never been called any of those because of the hobby. The only thing I've been called is crazy, because how much is spend on the dolls.

    11. I know someone who calls his doll his waifu, and not in a joking way. However I try not to judge...like, it's your doll, you paid for it, as long as it's in the confines of your home and you're not hurting anyone, why shouldn't you enjoy it in any way you want?

I do wish people wouldn't come up with such silly stereotypes about the doll hobby. If you collect baby ones then you must be a middle aged broody woman. If you collect big-headed/anime ones you must be a weeaboo. If you collect anatomically correct BJDs you must be a pervert. It's such bull, lol. I think people just like to clutch at these 'labels' for something they don't understand, the feel reassured by it and makes it less weird for them. We should try to be as accepting and patient as we wish they would be with us :)

    12. My questions are, has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No, people think I'm crazy for buying a expenssive doll but pervert no. And they know they are anatomically correct.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
      Nope.

      Sexual in any way?
No, sometimes they comment about romance, like one dating each other. But sexual situations are never thought about.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
      No lol

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
No and I don't see the relation, a nerd is someone that study a lot, at last is the meaning on my country so I can't see how this is related to dolls. And weird I suppose I can see for someone who likes dolls. But for me I find dolls normals and on BJDs a type of art.

    13. I supposed I can see why people say these things and I agree with a lot of other people that have posted that human's like to categorize things, and bjds, I believe, have a wide range of different people who collect them, but yes do get subjected to belonging to a few narrow groups by others.

Even the fact that this thread is still popular just goes to show that people like to categorize things, and we as individuals will always have to combat that at different levels in different aspects in our lives.

Personally I don't believe a "normal" person exists, lol, but I understand the underlining sentiment, and no I don't consider myself "normal" per sey. I consider myself a bit of a geek/nerd, but everyone I know can be one of those things in one way or another. lol

No, no one has ever thought I was a pervert for being interested in this hobby, but yes with a lot of exposure on things like sex dolls in the past few years I can see where that idea comes from. Also the collecting them because they're "sexy" mentality is applied to people who collect anime figurines, something I used to be involved in, and I see how people link collecting bjds with anime figurines because they don't know any better, and think they're the same thing.

I feel some of the other hobbies I belong to have a much larger "pervert" ratio than bjds.

Not saying everyone because hey I'm a part of these hobbies too, but being a part of the American comic fandom you run across quite a few people who you would consider perverted. Seems like every week when I'm picking up my comics I overhear something that I don't particularly approve of, but it's still not the entire comic book fandom, and people who run my local shop are awesome and not sexist.

People meeting me in my day to day life would never think of me as nerdy/geeky. I love fashion so I consider myself a well dress gay man, and I have many other hobbies besides bjds. I think people just link bjds into my other "creative" hobbies. i.e. Making clothing, photography, art, etc.

    14. I've been researching my doll for months now finding the perfect first doll for me. I have pictures that I look through at work when it is slow and my co workers love to look over my shoulder and comment on this sculpt is nicer than that one, or that her makeup is better for her face and what not. Even two people who said they are afraid of all dolls love to look at the photos and give me comments to help me narrow my decision down. They think it's wonderful that I have a creative hobby and they don't think I'm weird or a nerd for it....they think I'm a nerd because of my d&d, magic the gathering gaming night, and my horde of comics, manga, star trek/wars and sailor moon memorabilia. In fact one co worker said I finally have an interest in a normal hobby...lol.

    15. Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
Well, I've got "prevert" reputation not only for BJD (not real perversion, deviation).

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?

Somebody told me that I am in love with my doll)).

      Sexual in any way?

Don't you think SD too small for that kind of games? :D

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.

I was excellent student in school and university, but I was never labeled as nerd. Weirdo – may be. Most people think that collecting dolls is strange hobby for adults.

    16. If someone (male) said to me that my dolls were sexual and therefor I'm some kind of pervert or wierdo, my response would be to ask how I should feel about him playing violent video games. Does that mean he's a homocidal manaic? No. Guys do tend to think of things in sexual terms, especially when they are still a teenager. It's hormones. He'll grow up eventually.

Has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby?
No. With the people I know, it would never even cross their minds.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
No, but I don't tell a lot of people about my dolls, and I certainly don't let anyone see them undressed (except my friend who also has a bjd).

      Sexual in any way?
I've had people say my male dolls look very androgynous. They think they are asexual rather than sexual.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?
No. I probably am a nerd, but not because of my dolls. I'm a nerd in other ways. But I don't consider myself a wierdo. I'm retired and had a respectable career, and I choose to spend my retirement years enjoying my hobby.

    17. People have called me a nerd all my life and a pervert for a good 10 years now even before I got into dolls.

One of my friends thought I wanted the doll for perverted reasons until I pointed out "If I wanted a doll for -xxx- I'd say so." We're close enough that we aren't afraid to talk about our likes/dislikes of that nature.

Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like?
I once ran into a Dollfie Dream website looking for information (I had just first heard about them at the time) where the entire purpose of the site was modding the torso for...adult behavior. I decided not to stick around so I never talked to them, though I read a couple posts out of morbid fascination due to my insatiable curiosity. I still regret it.

      Sexual in any way?

See above. That said, I do know of certain stories and works that revolve around doll characters in that manner, but they're fictional characters in universe, not the actual toys. It's kind of hard to explain.

Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby.
Given the nature of anonymity on the internet there's no doubt several confession blogs calling out doll owners in general along these lines somewhere.

Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby?

Out of all the things I've done, do, and will do..I'd say this is barely skimming the surface. I consider collecting and customizing things to be a fairly normal hobby. Just an expensive one. Just because the shape it takes is different than someone else's doesn't make it inherently weird, imo.

    18. has anyone ever thought you were a pervert for your hobby? Not to my face
Ever talked to someone who thought they were fetish like? No
Sexual in any way? I dont think mypine are bc that how i've decided to keep them but i've seen dolls from other people that could be considered that was
Been labeled a "nerd" or "weirdo" for your hobby. Idk about this one but i think all doll owners are at least a little be weird or nerdy
Do you consider yourself a nerd or a weirdo for this hobby? Yes
