Bjds's strong smell?

Sep 18, 2021

    1. I haven't noticed my girl having a smell at all... maybe I'll take a whiff when I get home.

    2. I have a really sensitive sense of smell so I am quite conscious of smells when other people aren’t. That being said the time I do remember a doll genuinely smelling BAD was a DikaDoll doll that I received in 2021 when I opened the box there was such a strong resin smell it made me feel a little ill, I ended up having to air it off. But what was odd was I received the second part of my DikaDoll order a week later and the doll and parts from there smelt completely fine.

    3. After reading this thread I have gone to check my girls. I keep two in a cupboard with glass door and the others in their boxes. I didn't notice any smell in the ones in the cupboard, but I did in the ones in the boxes, specially in the one I used lest.
It had also been an extremely hot summer here, and, even if I keep them in the coolest room, it have been hot as hell

    4. Hello, today I opened the boxes where I keep my BJDs and a strong smell invaded my too. I suffer of various asmas and bronchite and turbinate hypertrophy. So I wonder if is safe for me these fumes/gas that comes from BJDs , especially in summer.

Is it normal that they smell ?Is the resin or the MSC sealer that gives this smell?

      Thanks for the infos!

    5. It's the smell from resin off-gassing. Some resins have it for longer, some lose the smell quicker, it's definitely more noticeable if dolls have been in an enclosed space like the box for a while. The smell is also more noticeable on dolls who have been sanded recently.
There is a bit more info about this on the forum if you search for "resin smell" for instance - there is a bit of talk of allergies at least.

    6. Thank you for the informations , I will check for resin smell in the forum .
My dolls are all old since 10 years ago and some even 15 years ago but still had this strong smell. I will check more infos then.. because to me, it seems that more old dolls are , more emits these smell. Maybe depending on the zone... I live in a zone of Italy that its really Hot on summer~~

    7. I recently unboxed some of my 20-plus-years BJD, after more than ten years with out so much as glancing at them from inside their boxes. I was scared they would stink to high h3ll, because my newest tiny stank so badly it gave me a horrible migraine when I first got him. Thank fully, none of them had any strong scents if any other than my Fairyland Chic Line Rou, who did have a very faint chemically scent that wasn't too bothersome for me. I suffer from strong allergies that can trigger migraines for me. I was pleasantly surprised, because I waited until just now (freaking hot summer) to customize them.

MSC looses its scent pretty quickly, so what you are smelling is definitely not it. If I had to say, is within minutes of MSC drying completely. It's more likely the different companies resins off gassing at different rates. I always keep my BID in my cool closet inside their boxes, even when I am actively handling them. All seem pretty much exactly as I left them in there more than ten years ago. Except for some rusty magnets and my weirdly green FL CL Rou's head cap.

The off gassing is definitely not healthy to breath in. I aired out my newest stinkiest BJD, when I got him for a few days. Out of his box in a well ventilated area. That helped quite a bit, to stop the strong, nauseating chemically scent he was giving. Hope that helps, and good luck! (:

    8. @dollypeach - I suffer from many allergies to odors, so I sympathize!

One thing I recommend that helps me is to buy activated charcoal satchels (you can find them on Amazon and elsewhere) and place them in the box or drawer with your dolls. They have to be re-activated every once in a while - but you just put them in the sun for a few hours and then they will work again. The charcoal absorbs odors and other forms of off-gassing.

I have some in all the drawers that have dolls or resin parts in them and they seem to help. I can still smell resin when I open the drawers and handle the dolls but it is significantly more mild.
