1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. I actually didn't do a box opening for my first two BJDs (anthros, Dalsoo & Wolffy) because I didn't think it was that important, lol! And then I find out that the box opening is a really big thing [to celebrate?], so I did a box opening for my first [human] BJD, my DOD DOT Calla!

After doing the box opening for my Calla, it was actually really fun! My family kept wanting to take pictures of me with her, etcetc, even though she was all naked. :D

    2. I personally love to saw boxs openings , and make photos and videos on my arrivals too. But It isnt true that only BJD owners has Box openings, Its kinda a huge culture on filming box opening stuffs, and it calls UNBOXING! XD (mostly technology things)

You can search them on youtube. ^^

    3. Honestly, the moment I got into this hobby I immediately couldn't wait to do my first box opening! First came my boyfriend's kdf luts cherry then the next wednesday after my girl arrived! I made sure to take lots of pictures because well, i feel like i want to preserve the moment of when she first arrived. also make it into a story on her meeting her sister.

another big reason is to show everyone who wanted to also witness her box opening as if they can see it liek they were actually there :)

    4. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yes. I did it because I do it with most of my big purchases (technology, collector edition games, dollhouse kits, etc). And then I blog about it because it makes for an interesting blog topic, especially for someone who wants the same thing.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
Its probably because BJDs are so dang expensive.

    5. Box openings are special. You wait forever for your doll whom you've probably spent time making a character for, naming, making or buying clothes and wigs, and day dreaming about your doll coming home. So when that box comes you want to make it a special welcome and turn it into a small ceremony.

I might have stemmed from Volks' doll ceremonies where you greet your dolls. They treat it as something spiritual, though, and I don't think box openings are taken that far.

Still, it's fun to greet your new doll and take pictures of something you can only do once. (Well, you only un-box and reveal any one doll once.) You want to relish it and enjoy every second. At least, that's how I see it. :3

    6. When owners get a new puppy/kitten, or bring a baby into their family, what do they do?

They make memories. For dolls, no matter how much we know that they're just dolls and no matter how many times we take their heads off and mess with them, we do get a certain attachment to them just because.

I like sharing in the joy of others. Watching someone's face light up and everything is just so nice to me. Because BJDs cross the border between being just possessions and being alive, we get an extended novelty feel, I guess. Does that make sense?

    7. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yes, I've done box openings with all three of my dolls. For Yuuma it was just pictures, for Airi it was video and pictures, and for Machika I did a video feed of it and took pictures.

--If yes, why did you do it?
I love sharing the joy of opening my new doll with others, I video streamed Machika's cause I've been in this hobby a year now and I have people that I consider my friends that live in other states, and I wanted to share my new doll with them

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I think most of use do it to share the excitement of a new doll. You've waited so long for it why not do a box opening? Honestly I'd hate opening my new doll alone with no one there to ohh and ahh over my new doll with me.

    8. I've seen only a few box openings and sometimes it's nice to see the brand-new doll. Maybe you'll even stumble upon one of someone receiving one you plan on ordering and you'll be able to see what it will look like without a face up or anything. But there are also lots of videos of box openings for computer gadgets, make up kits and tons of other things available on the net. I wouldn't say it's exclusive to BJDs.

    9. I never have cuz my first doll i took her out right at the store (DDE). But i think we do it cuz its like a exciting moment. they we want ot remember lol.

    10. why do we do this?, personally I think it's very interesting to have a reference on the house or factory we are buoying, if they give you any gifts or if they pack the doll well enough for it don't arrive with broken parts is as important as the feedback of the store, "unboxing" it's a sort of ritual you can find in other things as well, just use you-tube and use the word "unboxing" and you will see a ton of videos from everywhere and people opening from an I-Pod to a video-game limited edition...so in my humble opinion it's not restring to the BJDs hobby only... :sweat

Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yes, not video but pictures, I did it to help other users to see how the factory had shipped my doll, the flaws and the ups of buoying into that store.:)

(I think I have replied the second question already up in this same post...;))

    11. This will sound horrible.. but it's kind of like bringing home a child from the hospital, or a long adoption finalizing. You're excited because you're finally getting your baby home and you want to share the moment with someone! I totally get it, and I love looking at box-opening threads and gallery pages.

    12. I've never photographed a box opening myself, but I can see why someone would do it, considering how many months they've waited to get their doll! I get excited, too, but I figure people have seen enough box openings that it would be boring to see another. Just my opinion!

    13. iu fell in love with (BBB) dolls and i made a viseo on opening my very first doll becouse i whanted t have that moment save as my very first doll maybe we do it becouse we whant people or maybe just yourself to see the reaction of seeing the doll in person and faling in love with her/him.

    14. Box opening is important because I want to remember how it was like when the dolls arrived. The shipper box, the doll's own box, the way accessories were packed etc. I sometimes look back at these old photos in nostalgia. Box opening is important if the doll comes with a lot of accessories, you want to check for breakage, damage, production flaws and items omitted (if any). People who do videos of box opening often share the joy of their new doll. It's really fun to watch.

4 out of my 5 dolls have box opening threads in DOA. The last doll was publicity shy. I have photos of his box opening but they were never shared.

    15. I realize it might be said buy many people above, but I'll write it too.
The utilitarian purpose of box opening photos is to make sure it's all OK with doll and if it's not, to send company pics of failure.
Second utilitarian purpose is to show other people how company send their dolls - what's with package? safety? what about seams on doll? - and so on.
And, of course, it's a big joy when doll arrives - after choosing, talking with company, looong waiting, after all - so you want show it to all and have a positive reaction=)
As for me, I like to watch box openings, especially when waiting someone - it's someway calming, helping to wait patient=)

    16. I always enjoy box openings, they never get old. I like seeing the box get slowly opened and the doll come out. It's like sharing someone's Christmas. Hard not to enjoy that. I guess I'm still a kid at heart. That's probably why I still play with dolls. LOL.

    17. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      Yes I have!!!

--If yes, why did you do it?
      Because I felt for it,

      --If not, why not?
When I dont, its because I feel I want some time alone before showing my new doll off to anyone, because I want to bond with her, and "get to know her" without being disturbed by others opinions or stuff.

      2) Why do you think we do it?
Because we want to have contact with eatchother, get responses and show other something very lovely, share a beautiful feeling!!!

    18. Makes very much sense to me.

    19. I love to look at other people's box-openings, I read almost everyone that posted here on DoA. Don't comment that much though because I am lazy :d.

My own box-opening I always forget cuz I am to excited to get the box open and then its too late xD.

    20. personally opening the box is the start of giving new life, it also shows others about to get the same mold, what they are like outside of studio lights and so on. its also exciting to watch and a joyous occasion esp when you view your dolls as able to have souls, along with their own names, and then treating them as part of the family. its also nice to have that special moment caught on camera, plus useful in cases of damages. dont forget these are expensive luxury items, of course people will want to make sure the little one inside is OK on camera and that any problems are NOT the owners fault and so on. but mostly it is a joyous occasion wanted to be shared with all, (esp if its a doll you hardly see anyone have - like the one im looking to get ATM which is a Luts KDelf MOCHA- hard to find anywhere i look).
