1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. I check my amazon account everyday when I order a book or jewelry to see where it is, never mind paying hundreds of dollars and waiting weeks or months. The more you wait the more you pay, the more exited your get, thus the box opening party.

    2. I think we share a part of our excitation, our emotions because we realize a dream and a challenge (have money for the new BJD, the custom mext, etc.).
I love to see pics of arrival BJD ^^

    3. It's just the excitement, especially if it's your first doll. I see a lot of those videos on Youtube!

    4. I think box openings are something done for boxes that arrive after a wait-period full of excitement and anticipation. My friends and I have done box openings when we've gotten packages from other friends across the country, and this seems pretty common for people who have pen pals that send gifts. I think the same must be true for box openings involving dolls as well~ You've spent so much time and energy planning and saving for your doll, and then waiting while it was shipped. No doubt you've told people of your excitement, and run to the mail box every day to see if it had arrived. It seems natural to want to document and share an event that's been anticipated so much. :) Can't the same be said for people who take pictures while they open birthday or Christmas presents? I think I would view a doll box in much the same manner as this.

    5. As so many others have said: the wait, anticipation, and all of the work you've put into getting the doll (it's not as if they're not expensive!) It means something to you, and you want to share the joy with others! Besides, I love seeing people's box openings. It's a way to share good feelings all around and give reassurance to the people who are waiting that yes, you're doll is going to be just as awesome as the one someone else is unwrapping.

    6. Yes I have done a box opening, I think it's pretty important too.it is like the birthing video or pictures of your new born child. It is also fun to see what people get. How things are wrapped and what to expect when they come out of the box.

    7. :lol:I have never done a box opening with pictures or videos, but everytime I get a new doll or my daughter gets one, we open the box together. She opens hers in front of me and I open mine in front of her. We laugh, scream and just have a great time. It's just like Christmas when I was a child. Same with her. It's also the long wait. I just love everything about B JD's. I guess it looks really odd for a 52 yo and a 75yo,screaming and jumping around over a doll. Lynne

    8. Box openings.. It's like Christmas when I was a child. My daughter abd I call each other when we get a new doll and then run to the other ones house so we can see the new doll no matter whos doll. We scream and run around and just have the time of our lives. If anyone saw or heard us we would be sent to the "Resin Nut House." puglynne.

    9. I don't have a BJD yet, im in teh process of ordering one soon but, I have had box openings for my Blythe dolls. It might sound silly but my heart actually starts racing when i start opening the box. Sometimes I will tease myself and do something like take a shower do dishes ect.... right before opeing the new doll just to prolong the suspense.

    10. In fact, the box opening photos/videos are needed to send to doll company if something is wrong with the doll or if they forgot to put spare parts/wigs etc.
But I took photos of mine ever before I knew that. That are my precious memories, the moment that happens only once. And when I look though it again and again I feel so happy remembering it~
I'm looking forward to my next box opening, I hope it will happen soon

    11. I've done two box openings, for my first and second dolls. I was really new to the hobby (about 3 months and 5 months in respectively ) so I thought "yeah! that's what doll owners DO!" XD I enjoyed it actually, but by the time I go to my third and now 9th dolls, I really just can't be bothered anymore >.<;;; I still have all the ceremony: opening the box slowly, cooing over the contents, examining all the pretty new accessories etc., I just don't take pictures because usually I can't find my camera in all the excitement XD I sort of did one properly for Gabriell though, I just never posted the pics here.

I think people do it as a way of sharing their excitement, I think most of us love getting new dolls, and its almost like having a big party with all your dolly friends there to witness your newcomer's arrival. I personally enjoy browsing the Box-Opening Gallery thread occasionally because its a great way to see default sculpts- owners pics. Especially for Limiteds. :)

    12. Yes! When i got my first doll (about a week ago) i did a box opening :)
I was going to record it, but my camera was nearly dead and i was too excited to wait for it to charge, so i took pics with the little life it had left.
I guess its a ceremonial event. I mean, its almost like a child coming home XD Its fun, cuz you get to see this doll that you payed so much for and waited so long to get. Why not make a memory of it?

    13. I've sort of done one myself.

To be honest, I don't see why you wouldn't want to sort of. Not only is the information how the doll is packed is helpful, but people seem to forget that we're generally talking a few $100 or more spent on a doll. Which is no small sum of money really for many people. I personally find some box openings more useful to see a doll's full body and what arrives in a package then many discussion threads.

    14. I love to watch other people do box openings but I haven't done one myself. Maybe one day when I figure out how to use my camera I can do my own box opening. Since patience isn't my best virtue fumbling with a camera vs the excitement of opening the box...I think the box will most likely win. We will see when my next doll (currently on layaway) arrives in July. I sure do appreciate all of you who take the time to record the event and share it with us.

    15. I love box openings!!! lol I love the thrill and excitement of opening them (cause usually, I haul a lot of stuff along with the doll) and I love seeing other people's box openings because I'm always curious/nosy as to how other companies package their dolls, see what they come with, etc. It's exciting because the item cost a lot of money, and second of all you could have been waiting 3 months or more for that box to arrive! I don't do box openings for normal, small stuff I get in the mail though, like books or supplies... cuz that'd be boring and I don't think it would harbor much interest lol.

Format-wise, I prefer pictures... videos are hard to follow especially if the camera is low quality and the audio is really poor to the point that I have no idea what's going on and I can't even see the doll properly... @@

    16. I don't really have anything new to say. I posted the box opening photos for my boy on another site (he happened to be off topic here) mostly to share my excitement of his arrival to anyone who cared and also because I looked up box opening threads as part of my research before buying him. I like having an idea of exactly what to expect when my doll arrives. How different companies tend to ship (ie how well the doll was wrapped and in what material to prevent damage), what different sculpts look like without the factory face-up, etc. It's helpful to my decision, so I posted my own pictures in hopes that it might be helpful to someone else's.

Now that I have 2 new dolls on the way, I think I'm going to have a little more fun with their box opening. I have a whole photo story planned with my current boy and my two on the way. I've seen it done before and it seems fun, plus it'll help me establish my new arrivals' characters better.

    17. It's wonderful for us newbies to see everyones new arrival's and the excitement of opening their boxes. It makes the wait for my first doll to arrive a little more bearable as I can drool over other arrivals.

      :-) Kate

    18. I haven't posted a box opening yet, and I am not sure if I ever will. But I did box openings with pictures and everything for myself. For me, it is a way to remember the sweet moment of the arrival of my new doll, and also a security measure - if anything is broken, I can take pictures of it instantly and send them to the company for replacement. So it has a practical component for me, too. But the sentimental component prevails.

    19. looking at people's box openings are one of my favorite parts of doa. i get to live vicariously through them, without having to buy every doll out there. O.O

also, if i am considering a doll, i like to look them up in the box opening threads, because i feel like you get to see what they look like in "real life", sans pretty camera angles, and beautiful lighting. it helps me a lot to decide that way.

      ^_^

    20. For me, when I'm opening the doll box, rather then just open it quickly I feel that taking extra time to do things like take pictures or video makes the (long) wait better. I had to wait how many months for this box to get here? Might as well enjoy opening it as long as I can.

When looking at posts of other box openings I've found that it's often the best way to see a 'blank' doll or to get a good look at the body before any mods (even things like sueding and restringing) or painting. I always look up box opening when I'm looking into a new doll.

      Does anyone else do that?
