1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
No, I haven't gotten my doll yet but I intend to do one!

If yes, why did you do it?
I love watching the videos myself and love the look of joy on people's faces. I wanted to add to that.

Why do you think we do it?
look above. I also have to agree with the others that it's about the excitement of opening the box. More so if it's a first.

    2. I've never done a box opening myself. And probably never will. -sorrry- haha. But I understand people get excited abotu sharing their dolls, so want to show them off. And when it's my friends online who want to share their new member of their family, sure I'll watch. When I got Ren, my sister took pictures of his 'opening' without me even asking. she just picked up a camera and started to shoot away. I'm the only one in my family who enjoys this hobby, or buys the dolls, so it was pretty amusing that she did that.

    3. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Nope, I don't have my own bjd yet..

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I think that sharing is an important part of this hobby. We want to share everything about these dolls: box openings, moddings, broken noses, unreliable companies, tutorials, etc. Personally, I wouldn't find this hobby so enjoyable if there weren't people to share it with. Besides, why not to show others something as beautiful as bjds? ;)

    4. Because you only get to see your Doll you've waited such a long time for for the first time once! :D

    5. I haven't created a doll box opening only because i was too excited and impatient to record it. Although i do think they're strange, i enjoy watching them. The reaction is primarily why. It's not uncommon to see viral youtube videos with people's reactions on receiving something they've always wanted, so i think box openings are like this. The reactions just melt your heart sometimes because you can tell that person really really wanted it, and it's almost surreal that it's right in front of them.

    6. I've never personally posted pics of a box opening for two reasons: 1-I'm a bad photographer 2-I'm usually so excited to get her out of the box that I can't be slowed down by having to take photos!

I will say that I do like looking at others' box openings though. I think it's interesting to see how dolls are packed and boxed up and vicariously share in the thrill of someone getting their doll home at last. People have waited several weeks or sometimes months to get their dolls home and they want to share that moment with everyone here and I think that's perfectly fine.

    7. I will post mine, because it's my very first and I haven't yet found any threads portraying my doll type. It's not a secret, but I'm still waiting until it arrives!

    8. because we want to make people jealous :< lol no its like a birth, you have been waiting so long for it to get here and you want to remember that moment...I guess, never done one. when my Fiance finally got her doll, I wanted to go and watch her open it....and have a excuse to be there. I just wanted to see her face when she opened it. Its like christmas

    9. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yes, but only once. I did it because I hadn't seen another thread for my doll (or for that doll company, period) and thought it would be helpful to those who were looking to purchase said doll. I haven't done any others.

      2) Why do you think we do it?
To share our excitement and joy? Although I think some people do it simply because it seems "the thing to do" when you get a new doll. Almost like a tradition.

    10. I love browsing the doll opening threads..its to share the excitement, the look of pleasure on peoples faces, its heart warming and a thoroughly nice feeling seeing someone happy.
On a different level a box opening video or photo montage is something that helps the process of bonding with your doll...making the subject no longer doll-like but part of yourself and part of your treasured things. Its nice to reflect should you keep your resin person on their earliest days in your possession.

    11. I don't have my doll yet, but I surely will take shots of my box opening - it would be great memory.)
I think ppl doing it 'cos getting a doll is very exiting by itself, and you want to have pics to remember about it. (yeah I'm a manic type xD ). Besides, it can be helpful to other people - they can see a doll in details, for example.

    12. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box? No, not yet.

--If yes, why did you do it?

--If not, why not? I am too excited to patiently film or take step by step pictures. I love seeing how the dolls are packaged, arrive, etc. The only negative I have found is if you are waiting for the same doll it can take some of the excitement out of waiting for your delivery. Part of the excitement is the surprise of it all. This happened to me when I was waiting for Little Fee Pink Macaron. Of course, when mine arrived that concern flew out the window and I was thrilled.

      2) Why do you think we do it? Because we open the box and we see this lovely creature that we have been waiting anxiously for and there he/she is looking back at us and we want to welcome them to their new home. It is very exciting. :)

    13. I think I've done a box opening for pretty much all the dolls I've owned...
For me it's the community thing. DOA (and other bjd forums like it) is the only place other people can fully appreciate the excitement of getting your long awaited doll. I enjoy viewing other members box-openings, I even like just seeing how pretty/sturdy the box is! And the whole cat/animal in the box ending always makes me smile!

My partner is totally un-interested in my dolls and everytime I show him one he's like '...meh' so being able to share here is important for me.

    14. I personally haven't had a doll opening ceremony, but I know soon after I get my dolls set up I take a mountain of photos.

My wife has in the past, I think she did it because its an addition to her life and hobby. She told me if it were something else like a video game or a piece of really good technology it wouldn't mean anything, but for her a doll means everything. So I guess there's a feeling element attached to it.

    15. For my first doll, I did a video that's up on youtube, since I didn't have a DoA account to share it on. For my second, I didn't bother with a video or pictures since her body and head were purchased separately. Assuming I'm not too excited, I may do both one on youtube and one here when my third gets here.

    16. The box-opening forum is one of several that I visit each day. It's a good opportunity to see a wide variety of dolls, without having to troll the size-specific / company-specific forums. For that reason alone, I thank everybody who takes the time to make a box-opening thread. But I also really enjoy the recipients' excitement on receiving a new doll. It's so much fun!

    17. I did taking picture of the opening your first BJD thing. Idk why i did it either? Youtube influence? Lol But this is the first time i heard people video taping while taking a pair of shoe out. 0.0

    18. I think we just do it to have something to remember by, or for me personally, i can look back and count the number of expressions i make under the 5-10 minutes box opening. =D

    19. I've come to appreciate box openings because they can provide a lot of information. For one thing, the size mingles on that forum, and I see dolls in other sizes than the ones I normally study up on. Innovations in one size may show up later in others, for instance. Double joints were pretty new when I first started reading DOA posts.
Also, it sends an overall industry standard for packing quality. You see what to expect from a particular company's packing methods, down to things like, "they'll arrive very loosely strung and you'll have to buy thicker string and restring them yourself, no big deal." It's nice to know things like that so you can order the string you'll probably need.
When things go all wrong, experienced folks and mods can offer advice when they can see problems with good clear pictures done right away. They will comment to people if they think it'd be less hassle to repair yourself (will superglue be good enough?) or if the company should replace warped or broken bits.
Also, in group orders or on the incoming forums, people often request pix of specific things about a new sculpt. The new owners are invaluable for commenting about, explaining, and shoot pix of important details that were unclear in the company pictures, such as how parts are attached and how the proportions look. Sometimes they do posing shots, they show size or resin color comparisons. You get to see default faceups and outfits look when people use their home cameras. You often get to see good clear pix of blank dolls without faceups, and some folks on the forum will not buy until they've seen enough of the blank head, including profile shots.
That last bit might not matter so much on a limited or a one-off that's so rare that you might never see it again on the secondary market. But still, it might help you decide when you're judging the *next* limited offering from that company.

    20. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
I do two different box openings for my dolls. The first is when I initially open the box and check all the contents. The second is a photostory introducing the new doll. I may or may not post the initial opening depending on how long it's going to take me to edit and post the photostory.

      2) Why do you think we do it?
To me a big part of the box opening is sharing my excitement with everyone else. This is something that I've been looking forward to since before I placed the order. (I actually dreamt about doll clothes last night!) It's also a way to share the arrival with others from the waiting room threads who have already been sharing the wait.

A practical reason for box opening pictures is to document the items received and the condition they are in. That way, if there is a problem, you can show that the items arrive (or didn't arrive at all!) that way.

I've seen box opening pictures and videos from many, non-doll related hobbies. We are not alone in our box opening enthusiasm. :D
