1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. Very interesting topic. :)

      1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yup, I have only taken pictures of my box openings.
--If yes, why did you do it?
I took pictures mostly because I always want to have the memory of when my doll first arrived home. I don't want to forget anything.
      2) Why do you think we do it?

To me, it seems like box openings are like the birth of our dolls. It's when we first lay eyes on them in real life, when they are first face to face with us. Plus, it helps others who are thinking of purchasing the same bjd to wait until their doll comes in, or shows what the packaging will be like, etc. I also think that the BJD hobby is like one big family, and it's a way to share the happiness that you have when you have a box opening. :)

    2. I love love love looking at and/or watching box openings. I haven't yet gotten a doll yet (I find it very difficult to make up my mind), and so I like to see them to know what to expect when I do get one. There's also pictures of people holding the dolls, so it's always useful to be all "okay, so that's how it looks when someone holds a 65CM."

    3. It's exciting X3 I took loads of box opening photos when I got Ein, but I forgot to post them XD Four years on I think it's a bit late now, but I'll be doing it again when I get my new doll ^^ I guess one of the reasons is because you want to share your excitement with everyone else : D

    4. Today I just open mine! Of course I got pictures, my boyfriend photograph me opening it. To me it's awesome to remember their first picture ever, see again some time down the road and remember how it felt to open that box :). Also, I love to share it in the forum and among friends!

    5. I think it's fun to watch box opening video. I took a few pics when I opened my first doll box, but after that, I didn't bother. I think it does better on video, but I don't have a video camera.

    6. 1) Yes I have, and I made a little story out of it too. Since I give my girls personality, I wanted them to have a story of their arrival. It was pretty fun!
      2) It's like getting a BIG Christmas/Birthday present with your parents recording it. You just want to share it with the world and/or BRAG! It IS a pretty big deal since our dolls are rather expensive!

    7. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yes I have and I have no idea why I do. I've taken box opening pictures for almost all of my dolls but I've never posted or shared any...

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I have no idea why but I think it's just that we wait and stalk our packages for what seems like forever (even though it's only been like 3 days... but it seems forever to me!) and get caught up in the excitement of actually getting the doll that we want to share that happiness of opening the doll by capturing it on film.

    8. I LOVE to watch box openings, its one of the things that got me into bjd's, I love to see that first reaction on the face of the box opener! I guess a little of their excitement rubs off onto me and its always nice to see someone happy.

    9. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
No, but I took pictures of the opening x3

If yes, why did you do it?
It was my first BJD and I was very excited so I wanted to take pictures to keep a memory of this moment and to share it ^^

      2) Why do you think we do it?
I think that we may be so happy and excited when the doll finally arrives at home that we want to share this :) Plus, I think it's a good memory to keep, for exemple when I see my own opening box pictures I can see how much my doll has changed since it arrived and it pretty fun to compare, I find this really interesting to see the evolution of the doll.

    10. I tried to keep my buying a doll secret. So when it shipped to a friend's house, I got my friend to take it out of the box and hide it in her purse because my parents would have found out if she came over lugging a huge box with her. So I don't completely understand the whole box opening thing that I see goes on alot.

    11. I just have to share - the first box opening I saw on a forum was NOT for a doll! It was on the Zeppelin board FBO - a very expensive photo book Jimmy Page put out, that the guy had been waiting on forever LOL
So NOT just BJDs. I think the long waiting period & the expense, plus the whole forum has been waiting to see some of these dolls (or that book :D) are reasons. Obviously people enjoy them - I do!

    12. A box opening is exciting, I think people just noticed that and decided that if it was so, why not photograph it. I mean for so many people this is photo hobby anyways, so why not start at the beginning? When we open that doll box, we are feeling the culmination of the waiting for the creation and payment, feeling each of the ideas for our new dolls grow and blossom. For the doll, it finally gets to become a part of your life and make good on all the hopes and wishes that the people who made it send with each of their dolls. I think it seems clear that when you deal with many of these doll makers, that this art is very important to them, more so than just the things that makes money for them, but that they get great enjoyment out of it and want for us all the things we want for ourselves with each new doll we add to our collection.

    13. Well, I've seen someone bought some figures or games then taking the photos of box opening. I think some hobbies (like collecting figures or game lovers) will also do this. XD

      1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yes, I will take a few pictures of box opening. Just for recording and upload to my blog ;)

      2) Why do you think we do it?
I think this is part of our memory. It really worth us to record. ^^~

    14. I love too look at the box openings. It's nice to see the excitement of openings. I like it when people make stories with their other dolls helping open them.

    15. I bought HuiKa by HZ from Jeeryama. Here is my first BJD box opening:

      Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUMdMzrZPdo

      1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
--If yes, why did you do it?

Yes. I found a lot of videos and believe that a lot of people would like to see mine too.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

Because we are so happy with the dolls and want to make everyone happy like us.

PS: I can’t talk too much because my grammar is not the best. (I’m brazilian). Sorry if I don’t reply some big or complicated mails.

    16. Yes. I wanted to share my joy of this new doll arriving home with everyone who wanted. Also you can see the doll you might want to buy yourself, see the posing, the naked body (most of the time) and what the owner changed her/his doll into (or didn't change it at all). So it's really fun to look at them and also to make box openings. ^^

    17. I like to watch box openings of dolls I'm interested in buying, because I want to know what they look like out of the box, packaging, what they come with, etc.

I also take pictures of my box openings so I can show others who are interested in buying a doll from that company, and document any damage.

I view them as more useful, than entertaining. Though some box openings turn into photostories and are quite cute.

    18. I personally feel that box openings afford the recipient of a new doll the opportunity to share their joy and excitement with others. Plus, I feel that it's the one commonality among all BJD owners. Regardless of the brand of doll you're receiving, its box opening is something you will experience.

    19. I have had 2 box openings and there are many reasons why. I think the wait saving up and then the wait after the purchase builds anticipation which erupts on arrival. Also, Im the only one I know that is interested in this so I want to share with people who are into it too. We show new clothes to our friends so this is kind of the same theory, I can't share with you all unless I do a box opening shoot.

    20. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yes, I have made a box opening before.

--If yes, why did you do it?
I did it to show off my first doll and I did it so that if people buy the same doll as I do to make sure that they've made a great choice.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

To show others our awesome dolls. Too be honest, I'm not sure.
