1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pics as you opened the box? YES

      2) Why do you think we do it? I like to see how a company packs their goods, mostly because we invest hundreds of thousands into our collections and I want to know this company packs them properly and they arrive safely. Plus it's VERY exciting to have a new doll, and it's important to see pictures of what the doll looks like in person as opposed to just company pics.

    2. I've done it for all three of my dolls as of today being my most recent ones. Its a way of documenting happy memories, like when I was little my mom documented me opening birthday and Christmas gifts, Allister my most recent addiction to the family was my Christmas gift I partially paid for.

    3. I to be honest have been lucky enouh to get my doll on the spot.
but I can imagine box opening a bit like christmas day, where we film children opening presents and even take photos afterwards.
Its proabably the excitement and anticipation of waiting all those months, all that money poured into getting a doll. But I have watched a few videos of box opening and I guess its sharing the thrill of opening the box with everyone else. (I personally think its quite compelling 8'D)

    4. To me it's like celebrating the doll's birthday. I just wish I'd taken box photos of my very first doll, Ash, because he's my favorite.

    5. I love to watch other peoples box opening of dolls that I intend to get, and in return I take video of my own. But oddly, I never go back and watch what I've said. I think it's a "oh man why did I wear that, say that, etc" kind of thing. But they are always fun to watch, plus you just don't get to see anything but photos of the dolls from people otherwise. And at least seeing a doll in motion can help for a lot of people. :D

    6. This way I quoted two people at once...
erm, I think that's the overriding feeling of joy there, but also that of sharing, erm, like Plato's cave. We want to share our joys because without sharing them, it doesn't feel half as complete.

    7. I think many people do box openings to share their experience of getting their dolls with others in the community. It's also a good way to see what you can expect when you get your doll.

I know I really like to watch and look at box openings, because I like to see some of the small details that are shown on the dolls that you usually don't get to see once they are clothed, wigged, etc. For example: Like seeing how toes can look different from doll to doll and if the feet have veins.

    8. i think people do the box opening neither picture of video is to make a memory of the doll that you really love is came home ~
also i 'knew' that they want to share the joy and their happiness to other , i don't have any doll yet and planning to do both video and picture BO because i want to share to other member's on DoA my joy of having my first doll

also i think its become traditional on doll's hobby? though not many people want to post their BO and just post their new doll picture either way its fine :)

    9. to me, it's like a sort of tradition to film or take photos of box openings, and because pretty much no other hobbies have this factor, it makes us a bit more unique :D

    10. I sometimes , though rarely do them . - because I`m just too excited and forget . And when I do make them , I do them to keep a memory on how my doll first looked like , my reaction and all . Good memories.

    11. To be honest, I've never done a box opening with photos. I usually open them at strange times, or in pieces, or am not the first to open them (if they arrive home before me) but I understand why people do them. Sharing the excitement and making memories when they come home is fun and meaningful.

    12. I am a member of pkmncollectors (Pokemon Collectors), and they do box openings sometimes and almost everyone has a grail. I was really surprised because I was used to only seeing that within the BJD community. I think box openings are a fun way to show something you love to people who understand what it is.

I have done box openings because I enjoy talking to other members about it and sharing the excitement especially when my parents have no idea why I am excited about naked dolls XD I enjoy posting on others box openings as well because it is fun to let others know you enjoyed looking at their doll :)

    13. To me, it is all about sharing with others who understand..... the excitement, the joy and information! :daisy

    14. "arrivals/boxopenings" remains my first go-to forum here :fangirl:
LOVE boxopenings more than anythingggg !!!! They make me happy and they are sooo interesting as well as informative!

I say they should be mandatory :P ;)

    15. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box? YES!

--If yes, why did you do it? At the time I thought it would be amusing to have my current dolls help me open the doll box. It was just adorable. :)

      2) Why do you think we do it? To share the excitment we feel when we get a new doll? Then there are those of us who like to tell stories with our dolls and share them in photos. Box openings seem to be a big part of that. I love looking at box opening threads and sharing in the joy of someone getting a new or their first doll.

    16. So you can see my horrible dirty floor and annoying pet, that's why!! D:<
LOL. I'm always too much in a hurry to take pictures or videos, really.

    17. I think that box openings are really useful to see how the goods/dolls are wrapped or strunged. Personally if a doll is poorly wrapped, risking that the doll will broken during the shipping, I'll think twice before buying it!
Some box openings are really funny and helps me to kill the waiting time! ^w^

    18. Personally I like them and find them amusing, it's sort of like Christmas, getting something so expensive and luxurious. All the little layers of packing material to penetrate. The tidbits of extras you got, or other things you order for the doll. Plus! Box openings are like child birth! This doll went from being a pile of stinking resin to a hunk of sexy! And it's all yours, and added to the dollie population.

      1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yeah, I've only done it once though, and don't plan on doing it again. To me, box openings are baby showers, it's more tasteful to do it once, and for your first doll...XD

--If yes, why did you do it?
Sort of like following a tradition/going through the motion....because everyone else does it.

      --If not, why not?
I won't do it anymore because it's actually a pain in the ass to do: juggling between getting everything out, snapping pictures, and fighting the cat from chewing/sitting on everything. And it just takes longer...I usually have my doll unpacked, face upped and dressed up in an hour. The box opening photo shoot took an hour on its own. I'm impatient, what can I say?

      2) Why do you think we do it?
To show off our new family members of course! We want the warm welcomes it brings and for others to see sculpts they may want. That's how I do my research sometimes when thinking of buying a new doll. In fact, I'm going to do that right now. EID Bichun here I come! -scampers-

    19. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

I usually don't bother, but I did once.

--If yes, why did you do it?

Because I thought it was the "done thing" in the dolly world.

      --If not, why not?

Other than the one time, I really can't be bothered to take pictures while I'm opening stuff. It's a pain to do a long photostory since I have to email the pictures to myself from my cell phone.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I honestly have no idea. Someone must have started doing it and everyone else decided it was a good idea, or something, and it became a tradition in the the dolly world...

    20. I actually like box openings because of, let's say, a more pragmatic reason: I want to take a look at owners' photos of a doll, all the better if the doll is blank. I also like to read the owners' comments on how well (or bad) a doll poses, what the packaging was like, and so forth.

...That doesn't mean I can't join in the joy and excitement of unboxing a doll, as though it were a Christmas present and I still were a child :) Out of my four dolls (and one floating head), I've made a box opening for only one, my DS Saint, because of three main reasons. The first and most important: because it was my dream doll and I'd waited 14 months for it (the Dollshe Pure Body event, *ahem*). The second reason: I wanted to comment on the doll and my first impressions of it (popping joints! And if I'm not wrong, Dollshe was infamously known for that), hoping that said comments might be helpful to other collectors someway (I posted my box opening to my blog, not DoA, though). And the last reason: it's such a BIG PITA to go through customs in my country, not to mention taxes, that I needed to post about my doll getting out of there. Strictly speaking, it wasn't a box opening, but a box re-opening (and I can't forget one of the customs officers sent the faceplate flying over the table when taking out the doll). Ah, the joy of rescueing a doll from the customs office...! That'd pretty much be the sentimental aspect of box (re)openings for me.
