Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. I like looking at box openings. It's a bit boring but it's fun to see the new owner so excited.

As for doing my own; I took pictures when I opened my doll's box. but felt they were really too boring to post. I don't know if I'll do any for any future dolls I may get.

I really don't know where it started, but I like the photos much better than the Videos. Who wants to sit there for 3 minutes while someone fumbles with a pair of scissors trying to get the box opened?

    2. Yes, I did.
Because I wanted to share my excitement (I only uploaded a few pics, never more than 4, because frankly, after that I get bored with other peoples openings and I wouldn't want to do that to others) and also to remember what date the doll arrived. His/Her birthday will be that date.

Aside from the "sharing excitement" part, I think people look at them to see how a company's doll look right out of the box, new, without the personality and style that the owner has given or will give.
Also, to be sure to document eventual damage or errors from the company that has to be reported back so they can do something about it.

    3. I like to watch box opening sometimes. It's fun to see how they're backed and how excited the owner is. ~
Plus, it's nice to know if there's freebies xD
If it was up to me, I would love to see box opening in every hobby.

I never take photos of my box opening though. I'm too excited to have a backage to even get a camera.

    4. i always take pics of my doll's box openings. not to post online (though i end up putting up a few shots) but to note the condition of the box, the internal packaging, the item inside and if there is any damage. that way if i get something and it's broked, i have a series of images showing that it arrived in that condition.
(not just dolls, for anything i order online)

    5. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
I do for all my BJDs. I think it started when I saw someone's BJD channel when I was first seriously interested in the hobby.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
Hmmm.... For me I like seeing all the fun, artistic packaging most companies use and dealers lil bonuses they include sometimes too! :3

    6. I dont do it, mainly because, as I get a doll, Im waaayyy too excited to use half an hour to open it... So I gently rip open my boxes instead. :)

I think people do it because they enjoy the excitment of sharing their newborns with fellow members. <3

    7. I have not documented a box opening yet.

To be honest, I didn´t even think about it. Unless something strikes me as unusual, I am simply too eager to get the box open, see my new doll, confirm everything is alright to bother documenting each step of unpacking. I don´t care much about doll boxes in general anyway (I don´t collect BJDs only), I have thrown quite a few out, even BJD boxes (though I am keeping some sturdy or particularly nice ones), so it was just something that didn´t strike my mind.

I don´t really look much at box opening threads, either. I have only done so far when one was pointed out to me because it´s a fun photostory.

I didn´t really think about the issue before reading this thread, but I can see why people enjoy taking them or looking at them, and I appreciate them as a source of information on how a doll is packed, looks without face-up etc.

    8. I don't record my own box openings, simply because I'm too excited and I don't really think my own box openings warrant attention. But I do love watching other people's box openings. It gives me a good idea of what to expect with regards to the packaging and size of the BJD. And it's fun, in a watch-the-birthday-girl-open-her-presents kind of way.

    9. I think It's a part of game & great delight which you want to share.
And it's very useful - when I was choosing a body a box openings helped me to make a decision

    10. I love watching box openings because you get pumped up waiting for a doll or it reminds you of what your working towards. Right now I keep being a 'repeat customer' so to speak to box opening threads and RS box openings on Youtube because I don't want to get sidetracked in my savings. I can buy her a ton of little MLP blind bags when I get her.

    11. When I get my dolls I'll probably do box openings for them. I dunno why really, it just seems like so much fun to share it.

    12. I have. I found that I was one of the earlier people to receive a limited, so I posted an opening so people could see what to expect. Sadly my pictures at the time weren't the greatest.

I mainly look at them for their usefulness than anything else. Box opening pictures are usually a great way to figure out how a doll your interested in really looks without any of the photo tricks the company might have employed. You can also usually find out things like posability and general quality too. To equate this with the shoe analogy, this is probably the closest some people can get to "trying it on" before they buy.

    13. I created a box opening thread before.
I'm not sure why other people does it but at first, I did it out of pure curiosity because I never done one before and thought it might be interesting. Then after my first opening, I wanted to do future box opening for the sake of sharing my joy, excitement and my love for my doll!

Also, in a sense, the process of making the thread helped me bond with my new doll since I had to spend time taking pictures, playing with them, and see how beautiful she really is :D

    14. I like sharing the joy and excitement when I receive a doll with everyone and I do enjoy looking at other's box openings, especially those that got the same doll that Ive got/was going to get :3

    15. 1) Absolutely.

      2) Because these dolls are so expensive and welcoming one home is adding another member to your doll family- it's an important event. We wait so long for these boys and girls to come to us that when they finally get here, it's special!

I LOVE box openings. I like (living vicariously) seeing other people open their dolls and that intangible moment that they saved and spent a lot of money to have- the second they hold their new BJD! It's magical, wonderful, amazing BOX OPENING~

I love, love, love, love, love them!

    16. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yes, for most of my dolls and nowadays I even do it for outfits and such XD
      And sometimes even non-doll thinks.
For me it's sharing the excitement, but also because I want to show people who are maybe awaiting the same doll or want to buy from a company how it looks like to receive a doll from them.
How it's packed etc., and also in case something arrives damaged.

And I LOVE it when people make cute or interesting unpacking threads.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I think for various reason, but taking pictures of eventually occuring damages and to share the excitement might be the biggest reasons :)

    17. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yes for one, no for four.

--If yes, why did you do it?

To "practice" for a later, more elaborate box opening/photostory I plan to do, and because I'd never done it before and I wanted to try.

      --If not, why not?

Before I got Arra, it seemed silly to me and I didn't understand why people did it.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I think do it for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's fun. It gives you a chance to interact with your dolls and your dolls to interact with each other in a special way. Secondly, it communicates your excitement about your acquisition to others who might not understand lots of squeeing over the phone but can appreciate a witty photostory centered around the arrival of the new dollie. My non-doll friends shake their heads when I get excited about my dolls, but they enjoyed Arra's box opening because they could appreciate the humor in the script.

    18. ..... Why do you think we do it?
Why do we film when babies are born? I have an answer to this. To preserve that moment.
Its kind of like getting a new toy for the first time, or seeing that babies first cry. Its a memorable moment. Ive seen some adults film the first days with their kids so they can preserve the reactions, and remember thoughs first feelings and relive them. Honestly I will do the same when I have a kid, and when I have a BJD. I'd only do it for the BJD because ( im currently ) working REALLY hard towards one and taking up a LOT of time.

When I got my cat, and my sugar gliders. I TOOK ZILLIONS of pictures with them. My cat's first weighting and her first doctor's visit. Just to help preserve a good memory.. Then you remember why you were so happy to have them in the first place. <3

    19. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

--If yes, why did you do it?

      --If not, why not?

Yes, I did have a box opening. I currently only have one doll, and I had a box opening for her because to me, it was a big deal. I had been researching and waiting and saving, and finally, I had my very first BJD! I was really excited! So I just took some pics while I was opening her box because it seemed like a really special moment.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I think for those of us who do them, we do box openings because it's like the beginning of that doll's "life" so to speak, and also to remember that moment when your doll first arrived, so you can look back and see how far your doll has come <3

    20. Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
When I received my 1st boy, I didn't do it, I wanted just to dress him and take pics as fast as I could) With my 2d boy I took pics of teh box opening, too!

If yes, why did you do it?
For me a doll is a living being and we meet for the 1st time, so it's important!)

Why do you think we do it?
It's always interesting for me to watch arrivals gallery, because I can see new dolls, how they look like in reality etc, so I think it's the main reason!
