1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. I love box openings. I love to see the new dolls that people get and their reactions to them. Plus, I get to see if I might want that doll. :)

I don't do openings for my dolls as I'm too lazy. I know that's terrible, but I am.

    2. I don't record my box openings. Why? Because even on Christmas I open my gifts and don't get super excited. I mean, I do on the inside, but I'm too laid back to jump for joy or anything.

    3. I have photographed my box openings, not just with Bjd's, but also with Blythe. Why I do it, because it's such a magical moment (for me). Because prior to that moment you don't really know yet what a lovely creature you will hold in your hands. You open the box, and then there she is! (or a he, but that's almost never the case here) I just love how I can later always rewatch that exciting moment. And feel a little of the excitement I felt then.
Also the same for watching other people do a box opening, you just feel and share the excitement, I love it :D

    4. I love love LOVE box openings~! The excitement of the owner is catchy and it's also fun to see how different doll companies "wrap" their dolls for the shipping. Also, if the box-opening photoshoot is about a doll I've ordered myself, or considering to order in the future, it's fun to look at pics from other people about the same doll.

I've done box-opening pics of all of my dolls (and posted them on Finnish BJD-forums.. maybe I'll post the future box-openings here on DoA too. :3 ) and will continue to do so, because I want to record the moment for myself... and because I enjoy looking at other peoples' box openings, I think someone might just find my box-opening pics enjoyable.

    5. when you open a box, you get that exciting 'christmas feeling' like other people said. it feels very special when you are opening something, it's a good feeling. i think maybe people like looking at or making box-opening pics/vids to share that feeling... plus it is also informative and can bring in potential new customers to the company in some cases.

    6. I love watching BJD box openings. It's exciting plus I try to find ones of dolls or companies that I'm interested in since it's as close as I can get to seeing a doll in person (I'm saving for my first one). Plus as people have mentioned they're expensive and it often takes a lot of work to get the money together for them. Then a lot of people also share the story their dolls are in and want to show off the new character. Plus youtube is a good way to stay connected to the BJD community.

I personally am planning to do box openings for all of the dolls I receive once I start getting my dolls.

    7. I was wondering if there was a thread like this! Being a newb I've been wondering for ages :3
Since I'm waiting for my little Pukipuki, I've found I quiet like looking at box-openings for a sense of anticipation :) As for whether I'll do one? Not sure yet :p

    8. I love watching box openings, it makes the waiting easier. And I love to see how well the dolls are packed and it's great to see if they are easy to handle. That's especially important when I consider a doll in a size I don't own yet.

On the other hand I usually have no time to make my own box opening video because I am too excited and have to open the box immediately. Sometime I take at least some pics :)

    9. I am waiting for my first (and maybe only) bjd. To find quickly the money for the doll i turned my city upside down. Now all my friends are waiting for my doll with me. I guess the arrival of the box will be a great event. It will be filmed i think. Why? Because it is rare happening. Neither me, nor my friends have ever seen a bjd with or without box. It is interesting to shoot the process - to see the beginning, stages of process and the result.
I think people take pictures to document the historical event. It's not a joke. I mean every arrival of a doll is a great event. It can be compared to a birth of a child. We want to remember every step, enjoy every single moment.

    10. When I read the title I was like "Box Openings, why do we have them?" Well, a box doesn't open itself?

      1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Only once, but I can't get myself to do it more often... xD

--If yes, why did you do it?
Well, that one time it was a doll I really really liked. Well, for about a week or so, then I lost every interest. But okay, I had never done a BO before, so I wanted to try it.

      --If not, why not?
In the end I realised I did NOT have the patience to take pictures and gently open the box, so I never did a boxopening again. But I will try again when my CD Zion arrives!

      2) Why do you think we do it?
Well, getting a doll is like stepping into Christmas, and it's fun to show the excitement of getting a big box and maybe goodies and then the doll itself! And I really like seeing Box Opening shoots.

    11. I took pictures while I was opening my doll, but I've been taking pictures the whole way through. I think it's a lot of fun and I enjoy seeing other people do the same! I like to see their excitement and it helps me decide which companies to buy from.

    12. I think we have box opening videos because doll are so much money and then you have to wait months to even get you doll so when you finally do get it your all excited and it just feels like Christmas.

    13. i take pics when i open a box, everytime. it's a wonder, that i don't make pics when i'm opening a milkbox *haha*

and i often watch that pics. everytime i watch an opening, i kinda feel like i'm just open the box. really love that. and i love to watch openings from strangers <3

    14. I love watching them!
It gives me an idea of how the doll look with no clothes and no face-up (most of the time), I look at box openings to sculpts I like mainly as like... a reference kinda.
Plus, they're really exciting even just to watch! :) It's like sharing the excitement! I watch them more frequently when I have a doll on the way just to remind myself that the long wait it always worth it :love

    15. I watch them to live vicariously through those excited people while I'm playing the waiting game ^u^

    16. I have never done a box opening video because....I don't have a doll to open. But I do plan on making one! They capture the excitement, and it's a memorable moment, so why not document it? I personally enjoy watching them- it's like sharing the experience.^_^

    17. I'll tell you what I do. When I've been wanting something for so long and I finally get it, I find a sick enjoyment of opening it really slowly to enjoy that moment as long as I can. For example: I open the brown box, 20 minutes later I open the other box, I wait a few minutes and the i get into the tissue paper or packing beads or whatever it is. Is sick, I know, but is my way to stretch that moment and make it last. That's why I'll do box opening. Because I can do it all at once and enjoy it later and often. Is like falling in love. You go steady, you marry , have kids and you still love each other but no kiss ever tastes as good as the first one. :D

    18. It's a party!
      It is such a trill!
That curiosity, before opening and then, finding the doll in there and taking it away!
      It's amazing!

    19. I love watching box-opening videos, but never had the chance to make one myself cox most of my kids are adopted and my only kid which i bought is from a local shop. I would love to have a box-opening video one day, but then again, i might be too excited to do that :X

    20. love it! like other people said its about sharing the excitement with others, and also is quite helpful to help you get an idea of what you will get whit certain doll, and sometimes some people post small reviews, something quite helpful to.
aside from that when you look back to the pictures of videos you took you can feel all that excitement you had once again and revive those awesome loved memories, at the end, that is what photos and videos were once all about :)
