1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

      I don't think I've done a box-opening thread...I must go investigate this!

      2) Why do you think we do it?

It's fun showing off the doll you worked hard at getting. We spend a butt-load of money on these hunks of resin, so why would we not be proud and show them off? It's not like we are being snobby jerks trying to show other people up, we just want to share our happiness with other doll owners who can appreciate our new possession with us. Or something like that. :]

    2. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Not yet, since I haven't gotten a doll yet but I most likely will.

--If yes, why did you do it?
I think I would do it because I'm so excited about getting one, and it would be a big deal to me.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

Probably because of the cost and the wait time like other people were saying. Also I've seen through a lot of reading on this site alone, that some people are very very attached to their dolls. So I'd imagine it'd be kinda like getting a new puppy or like a baby, it's something that you want to have photos or videos of, because it's important to you.

    3. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      Only for one of my 3 dolls have I done a box opening, but that was because the other two were forcibly rushed ^^;
--If yes, why did you do it?:
Well, I figured I couldn't be the only person out here who enjoyed viewing box openings! It's also a great way to introduce a new doll I think.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
As stated above, for introductions sake! Also it is fun to share with others within the same hobby, and box openings also help to give a little bit more insight to newcomers as to what they should roughly expect.

    4. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

I have! I did because, unlike other things. my doll seems something very personal to me. It's not a doll coming home to me, it's a character I've created, someone who is a friend. By taking pictures I'm immortalizing the moment we 'meet', so I can keep that.

I also thinkit's a way to spread excitement! I know I love looking at other box opening threads and seeing people meet their new friends for a while, it makes me feel very happy for them!

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I'm not sure... I'm certain everyone has their own reasons, maybe some of them are similiar to my own

    5. I have never done a box opening, but in my little offline world I am the only doll crazy person. To the sanity around me I am the doll girl, lady. After waiting for a doll for months I often open them alone sometimes I even go to another room or wait till I will be alone because they do not understand the excitment. If I hear one more "its just a doll" I will scream!!
Sharing it with other doll lovers this ocassion of great joy with people who totally "get" you and validate that we are not alone.
Also on a practical note its a great way to show your the original owner (later on if your doll needs to be sold) and that she / he has not been through many hands.

    6. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
Yep, of each and every one of them (belated or not). In one case I even waited a day before opening untill my camera's batteries were recharged.

      2) Why do you think we do it?
Same reason my Dad found it necessary to ahem, video-tape my delivery to this world? I can tell you it was a lot more bloody than opening a box, but still xD I do think there's a deeper reason though, you are trying to capture that one moment when your excitement of receiving a new doll is at its highest. Also, obligatory cat-in-box-shots.

    7. 1) I have! And I suppose at the back of my head it was 'because everyone else did so', but isn't always about sort of being proud and wanting to show you achieved your dream.
I have actually seen people take photos of their shoes as well, it's a hobby thing I reckon. maybe not as strong with stamps collecting or so, but there's always some sort of ritual present. Orrr... Completely non-material response, think of a mother with their first born? I see a lot of flashing lights.
I guess my number two was summed up in there as well, hehe.

    8. I have to say I have looked at the title of this tread a number of times and could not figure out who in the world would watch someone open a box? Well I finaley had a look and spent over half an hour looking, what a riot. I think it is one of the best things on here! I love the ones where all the other kids are all hanging around watching and trying to help get the new guy out of the box. GREAT!:D

    9. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box? yes, a few times

--If yes, why did you do it? Umm... because I saw that a lot of people do it, and I was excited about my doll and thought it might be fun. But I don't do it anymore.

      2) Why do you think we do it? I think it's just because we're so excited about getting our new dolls. And so many people here are into photography, it just seems like a natural thing to do.

    10. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      Not yet :3

      --If not, why not?
      I don't have a doll yet, desune.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
So other people can see what it's packaged like, and what might come with it, such as Junkyspot openings with goodies.

    11. :sumomo:Because we can just never have too much happy in this world, specially on the internet?

    12. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

No. I took photos of one of my box openings myself because the box looked broken. The doll was fine.

      2) Why do you think we do it?

I don't know but I really love looking at the doll opening photos/videos! I guess you get infected by the person's enthusiasm and feel happy for them. We're all so cute when we get our dollies :fangirl:!!! Perhaps, people do it in an attempt to "share the love"? It works, if you ask me!

    13. If someone else picked up on this, I missed it - but box opening photostories and videos are really not unique to bjd collecting, or even doll collecting. It's pretty common in several hobbies where people wait a long time on new purchases and get all excited when they arrived, Check out the Transformers hobby, for example, and you'll see what I mean. ^_^

    14. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
I only have one doll as of this moment so I've taken loads of pictures when I was opening her :)

--If yes, why did you do it?:
I think it's something I want to look back to. LoL how my little angel looks like when she first arrived and the things that went with her. Part of something sentimental or whatever that is called XD

      2) Why do you think we do it?
As said earlier, doll owners treat their dolls as a part of the family, etc. So as proud owners who waited for months and months and spent a HUGE amount of money, it is somewhat an expected behavior.

    15. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Yes, because i think box opening means my kids come into my life and and change my life. The pictures of box opening are part of my memory.........

      2) Why do you think we do it?
For me, it's a part of my memory and it's for celebrate their arrival .

    16. I have yet to order my first doll but from my perspective this is what I think..

Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

Nope! And only because I have yet to get my first doll. I'm sure I will once I have! honestly I can't wait. I'm excited.

Why do you think we do it?

Here is my dynamic answer haha!

It's nice because it gives everyone a chance to see how different companies handle the shipping of their dolls. Are the dolls nicely padded? Are the safely tucked in and undamaged? It's nice to feel reassured from little things like that in my view as someone who has never ordered a doll. I've actually spent a lot of time looking at box openings for these reasons alone ( as well as others of course )

Another reason, I would love to share my joy with the community who understands my feelings when my kiddo arrives. People who had rejoice in the same manner they did when theirs came to their door stoop. I'm sure for a lot of people they may be the only person they know in real-life who really appreciates the hobby and it's just really nice to be able to turn to all you lovely people and share that excitement! I know in my view, the only person I know in real-life that is into the hobby currently lives several hours away at school so its a bit more difficult to share my joy with her. So I can imagine the community will be nice to have when that time rolls around.

To see the doll! I think this is the biggest reason we like to look at and like to post box openings. Who doesn't want to see the dollies in real life? Its nice to see the photos on the designer's websites but I personally find it more appealing to see it in the eyes of their owners if its when they first arrive or even after.

    17. The BJD fanbase is not the only group of people who do such things. On the MLPArena we have the "Brag Arena" where people post threads about new ponies they just got. You can even make brag threads about things other than ponies if you want. http://mlparena.com/Forums/viewforum/f=46.html

It's just fun to be all excited and post about something new you just got, and I know I enjoy reading the threads that other people make as well. it's just fun! ^_^

    18. Before I met BJD, I used to make opening photoshoot when my cds/dvds/figures/etc arrived. So, I thought it would be cute to make that for a doll... and I discovered many people do it :D amazing

    19. Never had a box opening. My patience is equal to that of a hungry squirrel. I actually was too impatient to get scissors and ripped the tape off with my long, jagged, creature nails.
I think we do it for the same reason we have people come with us for ultrasounds when preggers. We love it enough that we think everyone else should love it and see it.

    20. I love box openings. My favourite posts!
I like seeing how different people pack things as well
The more pictures the better - it's like watching Christmas!
