1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Box Openings - why do we have them?

Aug 23, 2010

    1. I love looking at box openings especially the one that i am getting soon!

    2. I've never uploaded a box opening session, it seems unnecessary, plus I do not like to teach my dolls before having them complete, and with his eyes, his wig ect. But also in the opening segment cash some molds can be seen without makeup, which I like because it is the best way to see how the head is really no tricks.

    3. It's almost like Christmas for me, because it takes so long to come home. Plus, I want to show all my friends my shiny new 'toy' that I just got. Perhaps it's because I want my ego stroked, I'm not sure, but I love sharing my exciting experience with everyone. I saved up so long, ordered, waited for two months or more, and finally it came. So I'm going to be really excited over it.

    4. I''ve three doll's at the moment and still haven't been able to capture a box opening, I'd like to in the future. I've always seen them as way as sharing your excitement and joy with other people who share the same interest. On the forum people will chat in threads where they admire the dolls, and where people talk amongst other who are also waiting for that particular doll/ brand. To me it's like an end of a journey for some at least, over the weeks/months it has taken for their precious doll to arrive and for some box opening could be like the next step in the chain. It lets people who are interested in one but not sure about buying, see what the doll looks like straight out of the box. Others that are still waiting maybe feel a little happiness that with more and more arriving, their's to shall soon arrive. I also think it's a nice sneak peak of what they will soon receive.:aheartbea

      sorry for rambling :D

    5. I think the reason people do it is the excitement of the beginning, to capture the moment of something new; like my very first day in Korea, I ran around snapping photos of anything and everything because I was so excited to be there and I wanted to keep that first moment forever. Then I met people, had a ton of fun, and totally forgot about my camera :D It's just that first moment no one wants to forget, and taking pictures or videos is a great way to remember it!

    6. I did a box opening with my girl. ^^ I did it because it was fun and I wanted to show everyone my doll. :3 She is so cute! <3

    7. Helps people remember the excitement of gettingt hem. It also shows others what the doll looks like better and its just eciting and fun to see it.

    8. It's definately about sharing the excitement or to excite you while waiting for your own doll to arrive.
      As this hobby is alot about the looks, quality and design of a doll I think everyone wants to share this and also let other people be a teensy bit jealous of their beautiful new doll!
      It's fun! I love watching them and I will defiantely be creating one for each of my dolls in the future!

    9. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?

      --If yes, why did you do it?
      For me it was kind of a right of passage. It was my first doll and in this hobby there is a sense of community even though many of the people here have never met. I viewed it as something that would solidify the start of this hobby for me and as a way to get started here on the forum. This was in 2008 and as you can see i'm still here enjoying the hobby. I think that it's a good way to get a foot in door on this forum and to celebrate the excitement of a new doll with others even if they aren't people you necessarily know.

      2) Why do you think we do it?
      I believe many people perceive these dolls as being apart from other dolls and want something to set them apart. With all the care put into making them, and all the effort gone through to bring them home it's natural that the journey would want to be celebrated and i think that it's a wonderful part of this hobby. It creates a sense of belonging no matter where your doll tastes lie.

      ~~~Needless to say i frequent the box-openings often <3 they might actually be my favorite aspect of the forum since it's so much fun to join in the excitement of whomever is receiving their doll.
    10. I like doing box openings because it feels almost like a ceremony, as silly as that might sound. It's like video taping the birth of a child in a way. I also like how it makes me feel like a part of the community on here. For me, dolls aren't just because they're something pretty that I like to look at. They include me in a community of other doll owners, and I enjoy it when people reply to my box opening telling me how nice my doll is and giving opinions on it. It makes me feel close to the community. I also love the idea of having it chronicled somewhere what your doll originally looked like, so that later on you can go back and look at it. See how far you've come.
    11. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      no
      --If not, why not?
      Well, for one thing, my mom and my BF were there and I didn't want them to think I was insane. XD;;; Plus I just kind of opened her quickly because we were in the middle of doing something outside.
      Also there are a TON of minifee ones already and they're really similar because they're pretty much all from the company and the packaging is really consistent.
      I did take lotsa pictures afterwards though, and post them in the reference threads, to fill some gaps in the info I had looked for before I bought her.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
      Just cuz we are excited and want to tell/show someone, I guess. XD; And since we like looking at them, we figure people will want to see ours? (Which they will..)
    12. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      Yes. I've never done video - no video camera for one - but every doll I've brought home has had a box opening photoshoot and it's been posted here.
      Why I did it: Other people do, and it looked like fun. They can be time-consuming, but there is something ceremonial about it - like you're celebrating the moment.
      2) Why do you think we do it?
      I think part of it is how sharing-based online life is. This is a way we can all be there for somebody's new doll. Chances are a lot of us are waiting for dolls, so we can vicariously enjoy someone else's new arrival. I was just listening to a radio show today talking about how we (in this case in Canada, but this applies in many places) feel that we have to record and save everything we do; I think this is also a factor.
      On top of that, I wonder to what degree this is related to the Volks "omukae ceremony". These are held at Volks stores and are little ceremonies to welcome your new Volks doll (mainly used for FCS but you can ask for one for any Volks doll, I believe). I'm not sure if this had any influence on early BJD owners, but maybe? :sweat
      I enjoy looking at other people's box openings. They can be informative as well as fun, and there's added excitement when it's a brand new sculpt just started arriving - you get to see the first pics of that doll on the board.
    13. i thoroughly enjoy reading and looking at photos of box openings, although I think I'd do my own by myself rather than have a mini gathering, but that is only because no one irl knows I want one and I don't want people harshing my buzz XD I think looking at other people's box openings provides a sense of community in the fandom too. And I kinda presumed that it all originated from one of the japanese companies that actually has a ceremony to join doll and owner together @_@
    14. i love box openings. it's like christmas day, and it's fun to see how different people celebrate the arrival of their new doll. i took box opening photos of each of my dolls, but i like to make them more like a mini photo-story than just a series of pictures. mainly my dolls are my fashion models, so this is my chance to make little stories with them ^_^
    15. Well, i don't post box openings cuz me and a camera don't work very well. I love to look at box openings though. I have a thing where i just like opening and watching people open boxes. Since i was a kid i always loved how happy people were after they opened something they've wanted, seeing their happy faces is just so fun for me XP
    16. 1) Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      Yep I took some photos! (Not very good might I add...I was to excited!)
      --If yes, why did you do it?
      Well pretty much because I wanted to post it on the Box Opening thread...But it was actually pretty enjoyable!
      2) Why do you think we do it?
      I think they can be informative, especially for those that don't know what to expect when they are getting their first dolls from different companies.
    17. Have you created a box opening video or taken pictures as you opened the box?
      I haven't got any BJD yet (I'm still waiting for my Addaly - Iplehouse "I"), but I took a picture of box opening of my Kooky. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=115740&l=3c69ea4548&id=100001105374138
      Kooky is a pink teddy bear and also wellknown (in my country) movie character. You can read about the movie here: http://www.kukysevraci.cz/en/
      Many Czechs love taking photos of their Kookies as much as BJD lovers of their dolls. :D
      If yes, why did you do it?
      I would compare these box openings to a birth of a child. People also take photos of their newborn childs. And BJD (or my Kooky :) ) is not just a toy, it's a new family member and it's important to document his (her) first appearance. :)
      Why do you think we do it?
      The same answer as previous.
    18. Thats exactly it.....getting a new doll feels like Christmas day always did as a kid :)
    19. For me, it's a happiness sharing as well as my chance to see blank doll before face-up (if it is blank)...
      Owners are rare to take blank doll pics while actually for some people it's very important. It's the best chance to see the sculpt without being distracted by face-up, wig, and whole style...
    20. I'm not particularly sure why we have box openings. Someone started it in their excitement I guess and it just sort of ended up being really popular. I guess because the hobby is something really unique and it's not a very well known one, it's a way of sharing the excitement especially with how much they are. And it gives you more to do with your dolls! Like BJDAddicts and their Video Prompts. x3 I'm actually hoping I can do a box opening at the end of this month and I guess the reason why is because... I want to share my excitement, especially after waiting for nearly 5 months for her. x3
