Buying a Doll Because of Fetish

May 12, 2010

    1. Ears will sometimes make or break a sculpt for me. I hate big sticking out "monkey" ears, but give a doll pointy elf ears and there is a good chance it will be one I would like to own. I also love unique eared dolls... like Soom Amber and Ai.

    2. I think the word "fetish" has been corrupted by a certain adult industry... So I'm glad to see this thread take off like it did without people assuming the OP meant something erotic!

The original use of the word meant that you make a false item based off something you adore. The classic story of Tristan and Isolde, Tristan builds a "fetish" statue of Isolde for him to worship. There are also Native American "Fetish" figures of little animals. It makes sense that BJD's fall into this category too!

I personally know I love fantasy, and I love warrior women. My dolls are all strong, beautiful women in fantasy styles. In a way, I am fetishsizing this trope buy building these fantasy women. It's why I do it! And I love it.

      Clarissaholic:
Foxie parts! That's so cute! Did you get a chance to buy Soom's MD Breccia?

    3. Erm... well I wouldn't call it a fetish just what I find attractive in a mold. Does drop dead gorgeous count?

I think its very much how I see humans really. If I analyse it (with the exception of my tiny), I like boy dolls with a smirk, all my dolls can smirk from an angle, a straight nose, a defined but not too strong jawline, full but thin lips and almond shaped eyes (not round and not squinty.) Very much a strong profile orientated.

As for bodies, it depends. I like a 'toned' doll. I don't like too much muscle but not lanky so enough to be pleasing, if its my more mature boys then I prefer them with nice well defined chests. Girly boys? Legs. Its always about the lovely shapely legs.

    4. Tell me your fetish or doll preferences that make you can't resist to buy them even tough you dislike the size or company or etc..and have fun reading all of the others fetish..

Hm~ The only type of dollie that would make me go "MUST HAVE RIGHT NOW" Would have to be a MSD sized Raccoon boy! I saw one a little while ago and I was clicking the "Buy Now" button before I knew what was happening XD Lucky for my bank account he was sold out!

    5. Sensual lips. A mouth can make or break a sculpt for me. And pupilless eyes! XD I don't know why.. they make dollies look.. ethereal.

    6. Err..how to change the title? :sweat

Thanks! But still many people have wrong assumption...I thought fetish is obsession..:XD:

Now you remind me! :(..i've just knew this BJD world for one month...she has already sold out..every doll I love is sold out..:...(

Oooh..the Kozy Mr.Raccoon? I love him too..but the tan is sold out! See? Every doll I love is sold out..

I think I know what's my other obsession..I just love sold out doll! :doh

    7. Like the pukipuki Tom cat? :XD: DZ Shoyo with cat ears? Gotta see them~

I never thought someone could love such detailed doll..but that makes everyone different and special! :)

Hooves..ah..but I much more like the horn than the hooves..

      Legs? I like
Long slender leg or full and tight on girls BJD

Vein in hand? Vein!? How can BJD companies make a so so amazing realistic doll? :aheartbea

Uhm..pointy ears look nice on cute girl..

Smirk doll..yep..I agree, it just make him more masculine..Idk why! :sweat

Pupilless sometimes look good sometimes scary..but that's me and that's you and we're special! ;)

    8. I don't think the word fetish is far off; it's just a word, humanity itself has associated it with perverse things.

      Fetish:
"1. An object that is believed to have magical or spiritual powers, especially such an object associated with animistic or shamanistic religious practices.
      2. An object of unreasonably excessive attention or reverence: made a fetish of punctuality.
      3. Something, such as a material object or a nonsexual part of the body, that arouses sexual desire and may become necessary for sexual gratification.
      4. An abnormally obsessive preoccupation or attachment; a fixation."

I'd say number 4 pretty much sums me up!

Just thought I would poke that in :)

    9. Thanks! Yes the number 4 is what I meant!

    10. I check out the ears...and I agree with the one who said bookworm and if the possibility of adding glasses, even better!

    11. I think fetish is an appropriate word in this case. In spite of pornographers co-opting it for their own purposes, the sexual definition isn't the only one.

Looking around at this collection, I'd say that my own preoccupations are fairly obvious. I like blue-eyed "pretty boys" with gentle expressions, often with long or shaggy dark hair, and typically dressed either in traditional Asian or formal Western outfits. 'Lots of wistful-looking bishie boys over here in suits and ties, or period costumes. XD

    12. I just looooove tiny feet and shoes xD But I don't think that makes me decide on the mold or body I buy :p
I like more unrealistic doll, elven ears, fantasy parts ^^ and prefer it with a more moody or melancholic face :) Looks soo much more peaceful to me :D

    13. I have a weakness for vampires. Often a vampire boy comes up and I can't resist getting him. I've also found a new weakness for grey skinned dolls.

    14. I'm all about eyes. The style of eyes, how far apart they are from each other, the placement on the head. They need to be expressive and appropriate for the character I have in mind. They are the "make or break" factor to me.

I also have a soft spot for androgynous dolls. :XD:

    15. While there are certain things that I routinely come back to in terms of dolls I buy - long pointed noses and droopy eyes - there's no real thematic fetish I have going on.

Now my PVC figure buying....that's something ruled entirely by fangirl fetishism.

    16. I find that I consistently fall in love with dolls that have smokey eye makeup. ^_^"

Both of my girls have this in their default faceup (IH Silvia and Soom Amber), and the next two girls I want to get have it too! I have noticed that every time a doll catches my eye...say like Souldoll's Chantal (ver. 1)...it's there. Hehe.
Even my male dolls have a "bruised" quality to the blushing around their eyes. My incoming doll is an Iplehouse Tedros...so yeah...

    17. PeppermintPocky: you're right, expressive eyes are also very important. I know much more quickly if a doll is meant for me or not if there's a picture of them looking me straight in the eye. If there is chemistry there in a frontal "looking you in the eye" picture, then I know it's meant to be.

    18. I'm big big BIG on lips, and mouth shapes in general. They're such a huge contributing factor to a sculpt's overall expression that if I can find something I don't like about the lips, I can talk myself out of an entire purchase.

Dolls that are almost, but not quite smiling? I'm so there. Dolls that look frowny from one angle, and pensive from another? Count me in!

    19. Not a fetish, but I do have a preference for narrow asian eyes and well defined noses.

    20. I forgot to mention... I also love dolls with pouts or slightly parted lips. Sulking/grumpy dolls, too. Oh, and I'm a sucker for neutral/emotionless ("poker face," if you will) expressions. :D

I agree completely, palartok. The eyes truly are the window to the soul! I am the type of person who knows right away if a sculpt is meant for me or not. If I open the box and question it, I know I can't force any chemistry.
