Buying a doll you thought you would never buy

Nov 11, 2009

    1. I haven't actually bought them yet, but I do have a couple of dolls on my wishlist that I never thought I would end up wantin to own. Kind of funny how your taste in resin changes like that.

    2. The vast majority of my BJDs are SD sized (58-62cm). I used to say I'd never buy a BJD over 62cm... but once my first DollZone 70cm guy got his foot in the door, the door was wide open!! They are definitely my 70cm dolls of choice, and now I have five plus one hybrid.

      I also said I'd never have an Elf BJD, and I thought Bobobie Weylin in his company pictures was so awful I couldn't understand how anyone would want him! But then I saw a Weylin in person at a meetup and was really intrigued. One day I found a lovely one for sale second hand at DoA, and once he came home, I knew an Elf was here to stay. I don't think I had loved a doll so much right out of the box since my first one!

      I've added two more Elves since, including one at 70cm!

    3. I seem to be a victim of this.

      My first impression of the Doll Leaves MSD sculpts was...not favorable. In fact I couldn't understand why anyone would buy one of those things. As my tastes broadened, I was looking for more interesting bodies, since the ones I had seemed to look too similar. I tried to convince myself that I liked Lilith's sculpt, since she seemed to be the most "normal" of selection. Then one day out of nowhere I clicked on MoC's page, saw Flora and something awakened inside of me. I had seen her many times before and just glossed over her because she didn't interest me. This time I just HAD to have her. I purchased her the following week.

      I was also extremely turned off by Doll Chateau's new MSD body with the extended neck, wrists and ankles. Turned off is an understatement! I was immediately interested in Queena but when I saw that body...I'm fairly certain I gagged. Now I find myself sneaking back to DC's website and staring at it. I'm still not certain I'll use the extenders, but the scary thing is I might!

      I also have to second FrigidDamsel about Mikhaila. I was bordering on disgust when I first saw her, especially when I discovered how popular she was. Now I'm eager to own this pretty girl and can't believe my past negative feelings toward her.

    4. Soom. I came into this hobby when their popularity probable was at its peak so far, and I really did not understand at all what the fuss was about. I was even a bit amused about the notion of being "soomed", couldn't understand it at all. Sure, I had seen few live and thought them nice to look at but could not imagine wanting one for myself. xD Oh how the mighty fall...
      Then along came LE Epidia and I had to re-evaluate my stance on Soom. After long and arduous inner battle I submitted to my "fate" and ordered her. Soon after, my friend mentioned ordering a Soom Picro. She had no use for the human head and once again I found myself at Soom's site, considering... So that resulted in a layaway too. :'D And now there is a Soom gentleman, bought from the marketplace, heading my way soon. So all in all, considering what companies my dolls are from and how many there are, Soom is the dominant brand in my household.

    5. I actually never thought I'd buy an MSD..Mostly because of the price and because it was really hard to find something I liked that I wouldn't have to do a lot of work I didn't know how to do or had the money to cough up to pay someone to do it for me. Now I've bought one and well...Just waiting for him to get home. I really love Bobobie/Resinsoul though and I would already love to welcome home more of their dolls. Arcani's still got a little sister waiting to come home (a BBB Isabella) and I wanna get my Light Tan elf trio of girlls home. (Mei, Bei and Yu)

      Maybe the better term is...I never thought I'd want so many elves? XD;;

    6. Dollzone Hal... I originally loathed the mold... now he's one of the dolls I'm planning to buy in the following year and probably THE doll I've been most excited about working on. He's just too inspiring for me, I don't even know..

    7. I never thought I would find myself wanting a Doll Chateau doll, much less the new one with the extended neck and arms and legs, but oddly enough she intrigues me, and I kind of want her now haha.
      Also, I have a Ringdoll Zombie Sol on his way to live here as well, and I never thought I would own a doll that looked half-eaten hahaha. Nonetheless, I will own one, and I think I'm more excited about him getting here than any other doll I've bought!! *laughs*

    8. I never liked Volks dolls, but now they're kind of my standard where resin weight/texture is concerned. I also thought I'd never want anything smaller than an SD, but I bought a pukipuki and kinda want an MSD (as in, I've done the research and am pretty much just saving up at this point... lol).

    9. I never thought I'd buy a resin doll to begin with, but here I am with an RS Long next to me. I though he was pretty enough from the company pics but wasn't gonna buy him, but when I got to hold my Aunt's Long I was totally sold.

    10. Resinsoul. For a long while I was pretty much a 'Dollzone is the only King of BJD companies' and kept my eyes closed to a lot of interesting companies out there. Whilst Dollzone is still the longest row of names on my wishlist I found myself adoring the Resinsoul Feng - then the Long was suggested to me for his smirk, and boy was I sold when I saw the owner photographs. I bought him on a whim and now I'm ridiculously over joyed that he'll be here soon. I can't exactly say I never thought I'd get a 70cm because I've wanted one for a while now, but at the start of the hobby I did think I would be limited to only MSDs. Then I had a moment of weakness and now I've got a giant elf on the way.

    11. I swore I would never go smaller than a 1/3, then a 1/4, and now I own a YoSD. I couldn't resist that dear sweet little face! Not only that, but I'm STILL getting used to how small they are when I'm sewing clothing. So small, *sobs* but too darned cute to resist for long! Never smaller than YoSD, I swear it! >.>;;

    12. I had the opposite happen Rajendora! I started out with Yo's, and swore I would never get anything bigger. Now Almost all my dolls are Sd's...

    13. Everytime I say noi have enough dolls, there is always one more I want and I end up getting it. I laugh at myself every time this happens.

    14. I never thougt I would get a taller/around70cm doll,all my friend had lots of them but I never wanted one
      then I saw the Souldoll Zenith dolls and I wanted a big boy,I now have Zenith hybrid with a Napi head,that boy is TALL

    15. There's been a number of "I'd probably never buy this" instances. I thought I'd never buy a doll over 50 cm because they're just too big and take up too much room, but here I am. Then I thought I'd never buy an Iplehouse doll, because as pretty as they were I just didn't think I need one, but I bought two last summer. Those weren't however things I was *convinced* I'd never buy, just something that I didn't think was likely to happen.

      There is however one thing that I've thought since the beginning of this hobby and was absolutely certain was going to hold: I was never going to buy a doll with closed eyes (as it's primary head, anyways - as an optional expression face, maybe). It just seemed kind of limited in terms of photography and characterization options, and besides - I like doll eyes. It's my second addiction (the first one being dolls) and I love collecting eyes and looking at pretty eyes in all of my dolls. So, obviously, me and closed-eyes dolls are just not going to be.

      However recently I absolutely fell in love with a dreaming sculpt. It was like, love at first sight. Pitter-patter went my heart. The sculpt does come with the open eye version as well, and I considered buying it too, briefly. But its the dreaming version that ultimately stole my heart, and the dreaming version was the only version I ended up getting. So... after 5 years, my first mostly-closed-eyed sculpt is on the way. Now THAT was a surprise!

    16. Have you ever bought a doll that you didn't like the first time you looked at it? Maybe it was to small, or to big, or you didn't like the way it was molded, or something like that. But you looked at it again maybe a few weeks later and you loved it so much you had to buy it? Or you started planning to buy it?

      Oh, all the time. "I don't want any dolls with elf ears or non-human features," I once told my mother while looking at DZ Celine. Shortly later, I realized how much I loved her haughty beautiful sculpt and had to buy her. Made her a mad scientist who just happened to give herself elf ears. Didn't like the stock photos of DM Paran. Saw owner pics and was smitten. Didn't care for company photos of DZ Binli. Fell for diverse looks that were done with her and found a lovely modded one to adopt. Once thought DM U-jee was cute but probably not for me... realized he could look older with different eyes and eye placement and fell completely in love. Even my Mir (who I consider basically love at first sight) had about a second of "okay, but not for me" until I read the option of getting him with a normal headcap instead of resin sculpted hair.

    17. I'm so happy that your getting your puki!

      For me this doll was Leeke World's (Khal Vampire Ver.) The first time I saw him I thought he was nice. But he was a large doll, I didn't have any that size, so I never thought I would buy him. One of my friends got him, and when I saw him face to face I was in love. :love But he was a limited edition and he was sold out. :...( So I thought I would never get him. Untill just a few day ago, my friend said she was selling him. Sooo, in a few months Khal will be mine. :celebrate

    18. I never thought I'd buy SDs, but I ended up getting an Iplehouse Theo on their new YID boy body.... The nYID body was so gorgeous and they had that event where you could get pretty much any of their SD heads on any of their SD bodies for the same price as basic... I couldn't resist.

    19. Well, In 8th grade I planned on getting a dollfie dream girl and in 9th grade, ended up getting an Msd 1/4 boy!

    20. Err..yep. I wanted a small collection of male SDs. Then Granado had to release the adorable Terra in their sunshine skin who is 46cm:...( I couldn't pass him up - he just had everything I was looking for in a younger sibling type, from maturity of face to body size.

      It feels so odd now to be poking around the other doll threads that aren't large size related. I feel like I'm discovering a whole new world...and now seriously considering a twin for him...:doh
